Horrible service and workmanship

We had purchased a home that had used Meyer & Depew for their heating and cooling service needs so we decided to go with them too. We had them install a central AC unit that they recommended, Carrier. They had installed a 2nd Carrier unit a few years earlier for the previous owner. Within a month of them coming to do the annual inspection, the "old" unit did not work. They put in a dye stick to determined where the leak was and said we had to wait to give the dye a chance to work. They would call us to come back and look for the leak. They did not. So when the refrigerant ran out, we had to call them at night, pay extra for a night visit and have them refill it. Then they had to come back during the day and fix it. They claimed they fixed it but a few months later it again was low on pressure. Finally someone found the leak. Several other companies told us that it should be covered by warranty, but M&D refused to acknowledge that and Carrier was no help either. We complained to the owner/manager. At one point the office admin said that they would fix it for free, but when I spoke to the manager he was going to charge again. We finally had someone else fix it. This went on all summer. We had to call M&D several times to refill the puron because of the leak, either because they did not follow up until the unit was empty, or because they did not fix it right. Finally, we had another company fix it. Then, the next year, the first unit did not work! We had them fix it free of charge. The second unit of course did not work again and we had someone else fix it. M&D who is supposedly expert in Carrier system installation and repair was not able to diagnose the problem, fix it (it turned out to be quite simple after the leak was fixed) or maintain it. They charged every time they came out (premium prices) and the quality of their work was far below standard! Stay away from Meyer & Depew of Kenilworth NJ and DO NOT get a Carrier AC!!!

****COPY OF MESSAGE SEND TO COMPLAINTWIRE.COM ON 04.13.10****

I am the President of Meyer & Depew Co. and recently became aware of the posting on your website on April 6, 2010 by Pu Yi regarding our company.

Not being familiar with Mr. or Ms. Yi's issues I reviewed our client records and found two clients with that last name - neither with the same first name.

Neither of these clients records reveal any problems even closely resembling what was posted on your website.

Certainly we may have the poster's spouse's/partner's last name on our records.

Can you provide us with any additional information regarding this post so that we can follow up with this party to learn more about their concerns and how we can make them a happy client again?

    Thank you.

I am the President of Meyer & Depew Co., Inc. and have attempted to identify this poster through ComplaintWire.org but have not received any response.  If the person who posted this comment would contact me I'd be more than happy to discuss their concerns and do all that I can to resolve them to their satisfaction.

It's odd that this post seems to be about something that happened some time ago and over an extended period of time yet we have no records of having worked with anyone with the same name as the poster.

Nevertheless, I am very concerned about anyone who is less than completely satisfied with the service we have provided.

Again, please contact me so we can address your concerns.

    Regards,

I wholeheartedly agree with Pu Ye. I also had work done by Meyer & Depew and would NEVER use them again.  They failed to fix the problem and charged me an OUTRAGEOUS amount of money. I ABSOLUTELY WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THEM !!!!!!

By the way, I tried repeatedly to call Mr. Ring and he would not return my phone calls. (This, after his salesman in the office became nasty with me on the phone.) So much for Mr. Ring's comment: "Nevertheless, I am very concerned about anyone who is less than completely satisfied with the service we have provided."  Really, Mr. Ring?  How concerned can you be when you won't even return a customer's repeated phone calls?  Based upon my personal experience, apparently Mr. Ring is only "concerned" about a customer when the customer posts comments about their negative experience with Meyer & Depew on the internet.  He/Meyer & Depew certainly didn't give a d_mn about me! BUYER BEWARE!!!!!

Rating: -2 Another Unhappy Meyer & Depew
The complaint I posted was true and factual.  I am not a competitor.  I was a customer.  Funny how Mr. Ring is NOW anxious to take phone calls when my repeated phone calls and voice messages to him to please call me were ignored and went unanswered at the time they charged me more than $600 for a SIMPLE textbook repair that a plumbing tech school student could have done.  Of course, had he known the customers he screwed would write their comments for the internet world to see, perhaps he might not have ignored repeated phone calls and voice message.  By the way, don't expect much better treatment from his employee, Bob Sutton, who was incredibly abusive to me on the phone, who told me the outrageous price I was charged was because it was "pay back time since I hadn't used them since they originally installed my unit years earlier!"  I guess "what goes around comes around."  YOU SHOULD NOT TREAT PEOPLE LIKE THIS AND EXPECT TO GET AWAY WITH IT!

Regarding the prior postings. I decided to post here because I don't like to see fake postings, or trickery. I can candidly write that Mr. Ring spoke to me on several different occasions, attempting to solve a problem an air-conditioning issue on a prior residence. Mr. Ring, provided good information as a courtesy to me. I was so impressed with the time he took to discuss solutions and causes, I decided to hire him for a service call. I bid his quotes out on several parts, and his was in line. On one occasion he was way under a competitor who was trying to pad a bill. His sales associate provided me with his cell, and he always returned my phone call on time. I am sure if I wanted to call Mr. Ring again he would take my call, he is a friendly and excellent professional. I might also add, that the sales director told me he had the utmost respect for Mr. Ring, and he was never so happy in his life working for this company. Based on multiple prior conversations with Mr. Ring, including having his sales manager's cell number on tap, I doubt the prior posters claim has any validity.  J. Schoen

    Mr. Ring.

Apparently you think you can misdirect the public by posting a response claiming it was a fake.

    How about.

    Failing to file my rebates.
    Failing 3 separate inspections
Leaving us without heat for 2 days.

Perhaps your memory is fading, but I too called you repeatedly and you never responded .

Don't bother now, I use another company for my service.

    Mr. Mercant,

Please call me. I'm not personally aware of you experiences with our company. I checked our customer records and don't find any records for a customer with your last name nor have I personally received any phone calls or voice mails from anyone with your last name. These complaints would be much more credible if we had any records of actually doing business with those writing here.

Over 98% of customers who responded to a customer satisfaction survey say they would recommend us to their friends and neighbors.

We have received the Carrier President's Award for four consecutive years ( 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011). We have an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and are the recipients of the Angie's List 'Super Service Award' for 2010.

Only on this website do folks seem to have a problem.

We employ a full-time employee just to process rebates and incentives. What rebates did you fail to receive?  And if we weren't able to repair or replace your heating system in a timely fashion due to circumstances beyond our control, then we would have provided you with temporary heaters. We have been doing so for nearly ten years.

Why would you have us install a new system for you and then stop using us while your system is still under warranty?

I would appreciate hearing from you. My direct dial number is 908-418-9208. I'd like to learn more about your experiences with our company.

    Buyer Beware

The company charges 2-3 times what other heating contractors charge.  Do not assume this company is giving you a fair deal.  The company will shut down your equipment, when others say it's fine, and try to sell you a new system at 2-3 times the normal rate.  They also inflate the repair bill to make it look like a fair deal.

    DO NOT TRUST THIS CONTRACTOR

The company is great. If your cheap and want second rate, short cut work, dont use them. If you value service and quality use them. Quite simple, really.

    Satisfied Customer in Middlesex, NJ
We have used Meyer & Depew Co. for over 20 years.  Bob Ring personally sold us our furnace and air conditioner 19 years ago and this past week Meyer & Depew Co. upgraded both of them to new even higher efficiency systems.

We have had a maintenance agreement with them for 20 years as well.  Their service techs are professional and very pleasant.  Whenever they enter our home they wear booties and are always clean and neat.

We recently had service performed by Tom and he was great.  He made us aware of how much energy we could save by updating our systems and told us about the tax credits and rebates.

Their salesman Gary met with us and he, too, was very professional.  He explained all of our options to us and helped us make a decision about what system was right for us.

Les and Phil were the two workers that installed the new systems and they couldn't have been nicer.  We actually enjoyed having them in our home.  Their supervisor David also stopped by and checked on their progress during the day.

I can't say enough good things about Bob Ring and Meyer & Depew Co.  I highly recommend them.

By the way, they even took care of making sure the proper permits were filed in our town.  When I called the town they told me the Meyer & Depew is very professional and they always take out permits.

I called Mr. Ring to compliment him on the outstanding job his company and employees did at my home. He asked me if I wouldn't mind posting here to let people know that the really do a good job. I've never had a bad experience with them and recommend them highly.

*************FINAL POSTING BY PRESIDENT OF MEY-- & DEP-- CO.***************

    **************************USERS OF THIS SITE BEWARE!***********************

This site is unmonitored and ANYONE can say ANYTHING without regard for the truth.  It is obvious to me that someone, most likely a competitor, is using this website to post negative and untruthful comments about our company.  None of the people who posted here and claim to be customers have ever done business with our company.  We have no record of doing business with anyone by the names posted here with the exception of J. Schoen, who contacted me and alerted me that he was posting based upon his experiences.  I also know the identity of "Satisfied Customer in Middlesex, NJ".  This is a repeat customer that we recently completed work for.  He called me to let me that how happy he was with the work we did in replacing his furnace and air conditioning system.  I asked him if he would please post about this experience on this website in an attempt to give readers of this website an honest evaluation of our company.

How many of you have ever heard or spoke the words "raving fan"?  Creating raving fans is something that all good businesses stive to do.  The term is often repeated in industry training programs.  It is not a term that homeowners are likely to use.  This term was used in a recent post on April 2 criticizing the legitimate post by "Satisfied Customer in Middlesex, NJ".  This is strong evidence to me that a competitor is posting these messages.

Last week someone posted, using my name, and made arrogant and inappropriate remarks as if they were me.  Under threat of legal action, the operators of this website removed the obviously false and slanderous posting.  Further evidence that these are malicious and false posts.

I've posted my email address and phone number previously.  If you would like to speak with me directly please feel free to call me or email me.  I will not post them again as it only gives the search engines more reason to return this website to you when searching for my company.  My home phone number is listed in the white pages - you can even call me there if you'd like.

    I repeat my previous statements...

-We are a family-owned business that was started in 1953.  My father started working in this company in 1961 when I was three weeks old.  I will celebrate my 30th year with the company later this month.  My wife and son are among our 45 employees.

-I have been an active member of the leading industry trade assocaition for 30 years and currently serve on its national board of directors.  This is not a position that I would be able to hold if I were taking advantage of my clients.

-We have been selling Carrier heating and cooling systems since 1953. We have received the Carrier President's Award in recognition of outstanding record of customer satisfaction for four years in a row (2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011).

-We are the 2010 recipient of the Angie's List Super Service Award.  Visit the Angie's list website to learn of the satisfied clients that posted there and helped us earn this award.

-We have an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.  You can check this yourself by visiting their website.

-We are highly succesful based upon the outstanding service that all of my co-workers deliver to our clients each and every day.

Does is seem odd to you that we would have such an outstanding record of client satisfaction with Carrier, Angie's List and the Better Business Bureau and be guilty of the poor service outlined in postings on this website?

I have my entire life invested in my company and I give all of our clients my personal pledge that everyone working in our company will always do the right thing in serving our clients.

As I will no longer be responding to anything else posted here I ask you to contact me directly should you have any concerns about doing business with our 58-year old business.

Thank you for your kind attention to this posting.

(I predict there will be a negative response to this posting in short order. Take it for what it is worth - not much).

I totally believe the complaint above. Two years ago, I got an estimate from M&D to replace my current system. They had repaired my ac unit and I didn't have a problem with them. The estimate was for $4,700 but I held off as everything was working until last month when I called them to fix the AC again. The same salesman gave me a price of almost $11,000! He tried to engage me in personal converstion, which felt weird. Then he walked all through my house to "check the ducts," which I later found out from a different company was totally unnecessary because I live in a townhome where the ductwork can't be changed. That new company also quoted me $6,000, which is appropriate and I am going with. I will never do business with M&D again. Oh - I called to complain and was asked to give them another chance - haha, and was told they are sorry. How about give me a refund for the service contract I'll never use???

I tried to just hire them thinking this website was probably what Mr. Ring had said.  Instead of the "free estimate" I was told I would have to pay $137 for someone to visit.

Anna at the service line told me this would not even be credited towards anything.

I attempted to call the number listed here but was directed immediately back to the service line.

I am going back to using Gold Medal.

Our company does not charge for "free estimates".  This client was quoted a service diagnostic charge of $137.  This is the cost of a service call and includes getting the technician to the client's home and checking out their HVAC system to diagnose the problem.  Before any repairs are performed, the client is quoted from our Up Front Pricing for the needed repairs. The client either accepts or rejects the quoted repairs withour further obligation.  This protects the client from firms that employ inexperienced technicians and charge by the hour.  The longer it takes them, the more they charge.  We also offer two different service agreements.  One would reduce the diagnostic charge and all repairs by 15%.  The other would waive the diagnostic charge and labor and parts charges for all covered repairs.

If anyone is looking for a proposal or estimate to replace or upgrade their heating and/or cooling system, there is never a charge for such work.  This is the what is commonly referred to as a "free estimate".

Sorry if there was any confusion with this client over our charges.  Our professional client service representatives are trained in how to clearly and completely explain our charges.

I called Meyer and Depew for a free estimate to replace my furnace and air conditioning system. I also called four other companies for a free estimate. I did NOT pay one penny for any of the five free estimates. Of all the companies I called, Meyer and Depew was the most professional, all around company. Estimator was 10 minutes early and any questions I had, he promptly answered for me while I was deciding which contractor to choose. I decided to go with Meyer and Depew and will post my experience after my equipment is installed.
