Total and complete B.S. that they require a written letter to Washington DC for cancellation....solely so they can string out your membership and continue to charge you for at least another month if not more.

I'm on a mo. to mo. membership so I decided to call my credit card company and have them blocked. Took 5 mins on the phone.  If my credit card company didn't have the ability to block a specific vendor, I was going to report my card stolen.  Either way they get no more money.

It's been so long since I signed the contract that I don't know if there are going to be any ramifications to doing it this way.  I would hope that when they stop receiving payment, they immediately cancel my membership.  We'll see...

Although blocking your card number is probably the only way to stop them from taking your money, you should also document your cancellation by sending notice in accordance with your contract.  They are used to running a scam where they "accept" cancellations, maybe even at your local health club, then simply "lose" it while they pile up "monthly fees" before handing off this "delinquent account" to their sleazy collection agency partner.

    Cover your a$$.

Both FAX a cancellation to their headquarters, including in your letter the date you originally told them to cancel, AND mail it certified return receipt requested.  Keep copies of your cancellation, along with both proof of FAX transmission, proof of mailing, and proof of receipt.

If you have further problems with fraudulent charges, or with attempts to shake you down for additional payments, immediatly contact your state Attorney General for assistance.
