strange number calling me

I get inundated phone calls from a number that only reads  697..I would like to know what this is all about? hundreds of calls, they leave no messages, no one is there when I do pick up…and tried to call back several times only to find out there is no such number. Is there any way to block this number and others who call?? PLEASE HELP!!!!!
