Today I went toc ancel membership - I am on a month-month membership - instead of cancelling it, they ask me to write a letter to their member services in Washington D.C. When I called the number it said, it will not be cancelled until I receive a confirmation.
What if the PO box number they gave me is fake an dthey never acknowledge the letters. I told them (Mr cisco and Ms Camilla in San jose fiteness center) that it is ridiculous in this day and age to ask someone to write a letter - at least give me a fax number. They refused and they refused to let me meet their manager.
Filthy people and filthy scam - just to make it harder for people to cancel the memberships - I am so GLAD I am getting out of this place!!

They have a history of such complaints, including a settlement with the Texas Attorney General for sending delinquent bills to former customers who had cancelled, which they later claimed were just offers to renew.
Always cancel with Ballys via certified mail, return receipt requested, mailed to the cancellation address from your contract. The Post Office can deliver certified return receipt mail to P.O. Boxes, and if the owner fails to pick up the mail in 30 days, the Post Office returns it to you stamping it to show it was not retrieved, which is proof you did mail it. You keep that letter unopened, in case you need to use it later in court.
If you are unsure of the address to send it to, you might contact BBB.
Or if the local site provides you with a bum address, contact the SCCDA Consumer Protection Unit.
On confirming their receipt of your cancellation letter, you will probably still get debit charges to your account as they attempt to keep taking your money. Dispute those now unauthorized charges as fraudulent, through your bank, and close your account or block your debit card due to fraud to prevent additional unauthorized charges. If this happens, file a fraud complaint with FTC and your state Attorney General.
Keep copies of all communications, including your letter, the Post Office confirmation of delivery from their website, and the return green card.
They have a habit of fraudulently passing off terminated accounts as "bad debts", often a year or two later, to some sleazy debt collector looking to con consumers into paying alleged "unpaid fees" from after you cancelled. If this happens, promptly contact a consumer attorney and sue them, as it is illegal under FDCPA to collect on "debts" they know are unowed. You might also contact the Santa Clara County DA's Consumer Protection Unit.
