They will pretend they never received any cancellation, keep taking money from your account as long as they can, and if you block or close the account, they are reported to pass it off to a related "loan" company's collection agency to extort the remainder of the contract amount from you after waiting for the full contract to run out.
Cancel by certified mail, return receipt requested, and close your account due to impending fraud. If you have any problems, contact your state Attorney General immediately, along with your local DA's Consumer Protection Unit.
I have been a member at Bally-total fitness for almost three years. Almost a year ago, my membership expired. After that, I was paying a month to month fee. After six months, my neck was hurting and my doctor told me not to do any type of exercise, so I decided to cancel the membership. Additionally, my family is moving back to India. So, now I want to cancel my account. My account number is 2605675840106.
I called customer service six times to cancel my expired membership. Most recently I called on May 25th, 2011, and customer service told me to write this letter to the customer service department to cancel the membership even though it should already be expired. Over the phone, the representative said explicitly that I would not have to pay to cancel my membership. I would appreciate if you would resolve my account and cancel the membership even though, again, it should already be expired. If you do not take my name out of your system and cancel the expired membership, I will consider my legal options. If necessary, I will contact my state attorney general, along with my local DA's Consumer Protection Unit to cancel my membership. I hope I it will not come to that point.
Sincerely yours,
Ritu Sagar

Bally Total Fitness Membership cancellations should be made possible in person, by phone or by e-mail. Cancellation at Bally is only possible through US postal mail which allows Bally Total Fitness to charge another month's membership fee ($25.00) while the mail is being delivered and processed. By making the process of cancellation of membership more difficult Bally's is racking up extra fee's from their members. The representatives that work at Bally Total Fitness and their customer service department refuse to cancel any membership and will continue to charge their customers until they have received a letter addressed to their cancellation department. Let Bally Total Fitness know that their cancellation policy is not OK with their guests. Why should customers continue to pay, even when trying to cancel membership?
