Bally's scam is that they ignore all cancellations unless you send them by certified mail to the cancellation address from your contract.  They may also claim that you can't cancel, based on whatever the terms of your contract are, and they were caught by the Texas Attorney General sending deceptive "delinquent notices" to former customers who had in fact cancelled, in an attempt to keep them paying.

They will pretend they never received any cancellation, keep taking money from your account as long as they can, and if you block or close the account, they are reported to pass it off to a related "loan" company's  collection agency to extort the remainder of the contract amount from you after waiting for the full contract to run out.

Cancel by certified mail, return receipt requested, and close your account due to impending fraud.  If you have any problems, contact your state Attorney General immediately, along with your local DA's Consumer Protection Unit.

    Dear Bally Total-Fitness Customer Service,

I have been a member at Bally-total fitness for almost three years. Almost a year ago, my membership expired. After that, I was paying a month to month fee. After six months, my neck was hurting and my doctor told me not to do any type of exercise, so I decided to cancel the membership. Additionally, my family is moving back to India. So, now I want to cancel my account. My account number is 2605675840106.
I called customer service six times to cancel my expired membership. Most recently I called on May 25th, 2011, and customer service told me to write this letter to the customer service department to cancel the membership even though it should already be expired. Over the phone, the representative said explicitly that I would not have to pay to cancel my membership.  I would appreciate if you would resolve my account and cancel the membership even though, again, it should already be expired. If you do not take my name out of your system and cancel the expired membership, I will consider my legal options.  If necessary, I will contact my state attorney general, along with my local DA's Consumer Protection Unit to cancel my membership.  I hope I it will not come to that point.
    Sincerely yours,
    Ritu Sagar

I recently voiced a complaint to Bally's through phone and LiveChat. It took three phone calls before they cancelled! They will mislead you in numerous ways. Also, when giving your information, they will "mistakenly" misspell your email to prevent you from receiving the necessary documents for cancellation. I understand misspelling my email once, but twice? Not only did I explicitly spell out my email verbally, but I wrote it as well. Another thing, ask them for an email confirming your cancellation. It's very unfortunate customer service no longer addresses the needs of customers. This doesn't go for Bally's alone but numerous companies. As technology progresses, people's word and service lose credibility. It's a shame. Continue calling their customer service, and maybe you'll find a sympathetic operator. They're truly a rarity!

Bally Total Fitness Membership cancellations should be made possible in person, by phone or by e-mail. Cancellation at Bally is only possible through US postal mail which allows Bally Total Fitness to charge another month's membership fee ($25.00) while the mail is being delivered and processed. By making the process of cancellation of membership more difficult Bally's is racking up extra fee's from their members. The representatives that work at Bally Total Fitness and their customer service department refuse to cancel any membership and will continue to charge their customers until they have received a letter addressed to their cancellation department. Let Bally Total Fitness know that their cancellation policy is not OK with their guests. Why should customers continue to pay, even when trying to cancel membership?

Ballys charged me twice in 1 month and included a late fee even though this is automatically charged to my creditcard. I have tried calling several times, and when I finally reach a human the call is dropped. The cancelation process is ridiculously hard, though the misbilling continues.
