Misrepresentation of facts/account status
Complaint

Received an unsolicited call regarding the update of a service I did not have, want, or approve for the past twelve months. Fee was over four hundred dollars and woman tried to convince me I already had the service and she was just trying to update my information for the next twelve months.
When I asked for a phone number she said she was unable to supply it, that the calls were automatic. Caller ID showed the call as out of area, and when I asked for a supervisor...she hung up.

Reports of doctored recorded "authorizations" of "directory listings" crammed through ESBI, along with numerous cramming complaints against ESBI.

I just got an ESBI charge on my business account. I called them and they put me through to the company who charged me. After I threatened them with a lawsuit for cramming, they played back a voice authorization that was not me. After listening to this recorded voice authorization I realized what they had done. I received a call from a company about a month ago requesting to update my online listing. They recorded me updating my address, phone number, and address (while talking to an actual person) with a recording in the background. I was not answering the questions to the recording, but the person who called. The recording, however, was what was recorded along with my voice authorizing these charges.
Be Careful! These scam artists are getting smarter.

Apparently ESBI bills for many of these phone scams. They got my office for $42.75. They are billing for IBA Services. Luckily I caught it on the first month. My employee was told that he was updating a free listing and they needed to verify information. He vows and declares that at no time was he told there would be any charges to the bill. It is highly likely that the recordings are altered after the fact. I base this on the fact that 4 times in the past week I have received a call to verify information but when I did not give a 'yes' answer, the rep came back on the line and said that I had to answer "yes". The rep actually became quite hostile by my refusal and hung up on me!!! They have called back 3 times despite my very blunt statement of "DO NOT CALL ME AGAIN"

We received a call at our business to verify information that they already had for "our online yellow pages listing". Instead of hanging up on them I asked if this was a free listing. They insisted that it was and asked me some questions, which I answered. The next month I received a $39.95/mo. charge by ESBI on my Verizon bill. When I called ESBI they said they would remove the charge. The following month there was an additional $39.95 charge and I called them again. They told me that it takes 2-3 months to remove the charge and that they would only remove one month's charges. They said they had me on tape agreeing to the charges. I listened to the tape and heard a yes answer to the question, "Do you agree to pay $39.95/month?" They never asked me that question and I am sure they altered the tape. I called Verizon and got a very nice and helpful person on the phone. She removed all of the charges and put a 3rd party billing block on my phone. While I was looking at my bill I also noticed a $6.95 charge from Integrated Voice Services, which is billed through a 3rd party. The Verizon rep told me that was the 4th month that was on the bill. I had not authorized that service and she took that off as well. I looked them up on the internet and found that was for conference calling which I never ordered. Beware of any 3rd party billing on your phone bill!!
