I reserved car rental through National/Atesa for my vacation in Spain for 272 EU. Upon coming home I discovered that invoice I got was for 378 EU. Explanation was that this is for insurance. It was never mentioned to me in advance.
Also, after five days car broke down and was towed away. I was charges for 210 EU for car repair. Atesa claimed that wrong gas was put in the car. I provided the copy for gas station receipt but got no positive results.
Customer Service is terrible - would not respond for two weeks.
My advice - stay away from National!

Have had the same problem with National/Citer in France. After renting car for one week in Avignon - a Citroen C4 Picasso Diesel - I was billed an additional 621 euros for supposedly putting the wrong fuel in the car. National claimed the car broke down and had to be towed. There was no way that was possible since myself and TWO other adults searched meticulously for a DIESEL pump at the service station before any fuel was loaded into the car. Also, I drove approximately 8 kilometers from the gas station to return the car, which performed perfectly on the way!! Sorry to say, I believe this is a scam that is being perpetrated on unsuspecting tourists. BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone know a reputable car rental in Barcelona Spain.  I have checked under "complaints and scams" and have not found one company that has a good record.  It seems like there is no protectiona and the car rental company can make up any story and charge your credit card and, even when you complain and provide valid evidence, the issue is not resloved in your favor. Shame on our credit card companies for not protecting us!
