The telecom slamming and boiler-room scams led to the Do Not Call laws.
At this point somewhat over half of American households are on the Do Not Call list, and TCPA prohibits ALL autdialed calls to cell phones without prior permission, rendering virtually all cell phones off limits as well.

That means that practically all sales calls most people receive from unknown callers are already intentionally violating U.S. law.  They are also likely to be engaged in a scam, attempting to defraud the people they call.

They don't care about the do not call list.  They will keep calling even after you tell them.

I recieved  a phone call  with the promise of a $200 gas card, they need a card name, then went on to state a second call would come to verfiy the information.  This is the second time the same call has come  over the cell phone.  I would like to have the Do not call   access  information as there are  alot of these call lately, normally I just hang up but this does not keep them from calling.

Telemarketing scam.  Several other numbers have been calling me, saying I have won  a 200 dollar card, and that I was one of 25 people chosen nationally. American Auto-Benefits located in Phoenix AZ, representative: Mike and his ID: AB4120. I  indulged them long enough to confirm that they were lying. Wanted my credit card number, I told them I didn't have it memorized and to call back tomorrow. Never received word. Called each number back, and only two numbers were in service so I hit one to be removed from the list. Unfortunately I had already given them my home address. I registered a complaint with the FCC, told my bank to be alert and am watching my mail (e-mail as well) very closely. You never know what can be dug up with just your address.

I was also sent a text message saying to call this number because I had won. When I began asking questions the Foreign gentleman kept trying to deflect me by asking for my first and last name. I told him I never heard of them and couldn't understand how I was chosen as a winner. He kept insisting that I give him my first and last name because I had won the two gift cards. When I looked on the internet, I seen everyone's post about this SCAM these individuals have been trying to run. Needless to say that conversation was cut short! Thank you all for posting these comments and saving me from being PUNKED!

I received a text from American Auto Benefits saying I had won $200 gas voucher and $20 walmart card.  I called them at 1-800-256-7497 and spoke to a person with a thick accent and less than acceptable grammar.  He kept insisting he needed my credit card number, but he referred to it as plastic, to charge me $2.00 so he could send the vouchers and gift card.  He stated the company was in Phoenix, AZ.  While on the phone I found this website saying it is a scam. The only company with this name is in Florida.  He stated his company's website was under construction.  I finally convinced him to give me his credit card number as a sign of trust before I gave mine and he gave me Jack Wilson card number 5359-3805-3602-3375 exp date 11/19.
This is a huge scam, NEVER give your credit card number out.  I also filed an online complaint with the do not call registry while I had him on the phone wasting his time.

Yep, they did this to me too.  An indian guy called and said I had won a two hundred dollar gas voucher for being a preferred customer and paying my bills on time.  He said he was with American Auto Benefits.  He just needed my credit or debit card number to pay a one time shipping and handling fee of two dollars.  I told him I didn't have a card and he tried to convince me that I must have a card because that's the only way he could've gotten my information:  name, address, and phone number.  I just told him that was strange because I didn't have a card.  He asked if any of my family had one, logical right?  I told him I had no family.  I hope people don't actually fall for this scam.  I think I've received a call like this before, actually.  I don't understand how they've been in operation all this time.  You'd think the law would shut this scam down already.  Huh, weird.

I have the same thing today. I had a call from American Auto Benefits with the promise of $200 gas card and 10% coupon off to go anywhere for a vi-cation, but I have to pay $2 to activate the gas card which is not expire EVER. Her name was Mary Johnson and she spoke with a huge accent. She gave me my ID# 91630, she knows my name, last name, address and everything except my credit card#. I hung up the phone when she was asking for the card #.

These are scammers. Am new to the country on vacation, when they called i was dumb enough to give them my card details thinking i would suprise my brother with a 200 hundred dollar gas voucher. They repeatedly told me i would not be charged for anything except the 3 dollars shipping fee. When i told my brother about it he told me its a scam and i should call and cancel. I called the customer care number they gave me and cancelled and again they assuared me i would not receive any charges. Two days later my account was charged 61 dollars! I called to complain and a guy told me that i had agreed to the questions which meant i had subscribed (even though i was told repeatedly answering yes does not mean you have subscibed). I was upset and called them scammers. my brother called them again immediately afterward and a lady responded that they would credit back the account after 5 working days. I think they are just trying to stall me. They are scammers!! The authorities should do something about them. At this point am considering the 61 dollars gone and planning to close my account so they dont steal more."

Here is one report from someone claiming they actually received vouchers, but are trying to find out how to get any money for them.

Although they claim you are getting "$200 in free gas" already it's clear it's not as simple as the sales pitch claimed.  Assuming they actually pay off at all  and don't come up with other excuses for not paying a dime (so far this consumer has received nothing), it appears that at best they are dribbling out some rebate that is barely worth the work it takes to apply for it, even as they appear to be cramming monthly charges that will far exceed any payment you have any chance of receiving, if you even receive anything.

This is a pattern of fraud common with "discount membership" scams:  offer some "benefit" that sounds like a good deal to get you to disclose your card number, then when it comes time to pay out, the consumer finds there are all sorts of restrictions, limits, and delays that were not disclosed up front, even as they keep cramming monthly charges.  Under the undisclosed "terms", there is no chance you will ever get any benefit that comes close to what it will have cost you in monthly "membership" charges.

Hey, can you tell me how did you use those gas vouchers. I took that offer but nobody there can explain me how to use those. The instructions given in the gas rebate form says that I have to send $100 gas receipt to receive $10 gas rebate check monthly, which is too much of hassle for me to do. Is there any way that the voucher can be used?"

I also got a message on my Metro PCS phone about this 200 gift card which would be mailed to me within 2 to 3 day period. First off, it takes a lot longer then 3 days to mail anything across the United States. I led them on for 20 minutes, making them believe i was actually going to go through with the SCAM and spoke with 4 different men. They all had arab accents and told me his name was John Davis. Inwhich I immediately told him he was a liar and that wasnt his name. I was hung up on 4 times, everytime I started to question their legitamacy. He immediately told me his ID number, like that would make me trust him or something. I told him i reported him to the FCC and was hung up on. ITS A SCAM.  Never give out your credit card numbers. I onl y gave them my home address and the experiation date to an old old old Visa Debit card and he knew my first and last name, and the first 4 digits of my Visa card before i even told him anything. This company needs to be shut down. I know their stationed in the middle east so i guess is anyone is dumb enough to give out their credit card number they deserve to get scammed.

"he knew my first and last name, and the first 4 digits of my Visa card before i even told him anything."

He probably just guessed at the first 4 digits of your VISA card.  There are several other reports that this particular scam is using that line to appear "legitimate".

The first 4 digits of all card numbers are based on the bank, and if the first digit is a 4, it's a VISA.  Since VISA International is the largest credit card organization, and BofA is the largest U.S. bank, especially in consumer credit, it's easy to guess 4 and be right most of the time.  It's even easy to guess 4888 (for BofA VISA), and be right a lot.  There are a number of reports of this group of scammers using this same line to get the consumer's confidence.

I had a place called US Auto Discount trying to pull the same scam on me. An Indian sounding guy insisting that they were legit but when I asked to talk to a supervisor he started getting angry with me. The telephone ID was 000-000-0000 ! Bewarenothing is for free in this world.

This is a scam.  They ask for the last 4 digits of your Visa card.  I have no idea how they got my information.  I already dealt with them last year and now they are back calling again.  The last call they made I got pissed and said some real negative things.  They were already calling me every other day and the lady on the phone told me to expect a call every hour because of my negative comments.  This is disheartening.  I have no idea how to make these people responsible for their stupid actions.  TOTAL SCAM!
