We got one of those calls from a call center in India from a guy who said his name was James Anderson, with an Indian accent so thick you could cut it with a knife.  Claimed we took out a payday loan, which we have never done, and that we owed an undisclosed amount on it.  Said he was calling from ACS law offices. When I told him to send me papers, let me talk to his supervisor, and give me his number, he balked; when I told him his number came up on my phone and I was call the [international] authorities, he hung up.  Do not fall for this and give out no private information.  If you get another call, tell them you are contacting authorities, and they will leave you alone.

They are a bunch of criminals calling from overseas, probably India, probably via VoIP because it's cheap, and trying to scam and extort money out of Americans for phony "payday loans".  They may even have information like old account numbers, SSN, DOB, relatives or employers, possibly from pulling credit reports or through skip-trace searches, or sometimes phony on-line payday loan sites, but the alleged debts are entirely phony, or if real, not owed to these crooks.

    They are liars.

File a complaint with the FBI, and if they keep calling, record them and tell them the call is being recorded as evidence.  If they have any brains, they will move on when they know you won't be conned.

Warning from the Illinois Attorney General:

Warn your friends and co-workers about this scam, so that they don't get conned.

Do not give these scam artists any information. They have obtained personal information illegally and are using it to con people out of money by using threats of jail, court or worse. If you receive a call from ACS (they also go by NCS, CCS, Loanpoint and other names), please file a report with the FBI, FTC and Attorney General for your state. The FBI has information about this scam on their website (Internet Fraud page). These people tend to use generic names such as Smith, Thomas. Cooper, Wilson, etc. They are nothing but a bunch of morons who are too lazy to get an honest job so they defraud innocent people. If they contact you, ask them questions about their company and ask them to send you the information in writing. Chance are they will say they can't do that. If they do, it will be an email from a gmail or hotmail account that is bogus. Tell them that your conversation is being recorded and do it (if you are able to). Advise them you are contacting the FBI. They have the mental capacity of a 4 year old. You may see threads on certain sites stating this is a legit company and to pay the debt. Ignore it. It is one of the moron scam artists trolling these sites trying to get people to fall for it. They call from several different numbers so it is hard to keep up with what number they may use. It may be a local number or toll free number. If they call you, tell them they can call you back at 202-324-3000 (FBI contact number).
