There are numerous fake "debt collection" scams in operation, depending on making phone threats to extort unowed payments from consumers.

You cannot rely on ANY statements made py strangers on the phone.

Legitimate debt collectors will comply with FDCPA.

They will send you a letter within 5 days of first contact, notifying you of the alleged debt, and of your right to dispute and request validation of it.

If you request validation, they will cease collection until the obtain documentation from the original creditor and send it to you.

Any illegal practices by debt collectors may be an indicator of fraud.

I have been harrassed by DCA lawfirm and its many pseudonames repeatedly. It has gone on for over a year. I am exhausted by messages and calls to my workplace. I bet calls to the work place have gotten them results with many people who are in other types of debt. I owe the company/ies nothing, never had a loan with any of the companies they mentioned, never received any legal documents proving otherwise. They obtained my info illegally or I applied for a loan, was denied, and now "the DCA" has my social, home #, and work #.
I just filed complaints with the FTC (1-877-FTC-HELP) and FBI's internet fraud division called IC3 (www.IC3.gov). You should too.

I too have filed a complaint.  I also called the local city police and they referred me to the local FBI internet fraud division.
