Tearing holes in clothes

I bought a Whirlpool Duet washer and dryer in our new house back in late March of 2012. I have been finding torn shirts about once a month. Initially, I thought it was the dryer that was causing the tears. I recently discovered that the washer is the problem. Unfortunately, all of the shirts that were torn are unwearable now.
I called Whirlpool about this issue and the customer service agent was not very helpful to say the least. I was at work when I called and didn't have the serial number of the washer handy. She acted like this is the first time she has even heard of this issue. Are people really that stupid at Whirlpool that I would not find complaints on the web about the problems with this washer?
After reading through the horror stories on this board, I don't think that even if they offered to fix it, the issue will be resolved. I am so paranoid about using this washer now.
