I travelled to Belfast with my daughter recently for Niece’s birthday and planned parents graveside visit. I hired a vehicle from Europcar on-line in advance. I had provided all my license details prior to accommodate speedy pick up and everything went smooth – to the point I would have used services again. That is until, on the 12th April, I received hastily written letter saying there was damage to the car I had rented and they had taken a further £207 (£180+£27 admin) for '75-150mm scratches'

As the offices were closed I contacted Europcar the following morning to state there must have been error their part because the vehicle was parked at a private address and I was sure no damage occurred whilst in my care. After chasing for several days I was advised I could complain to the BVRLA which I did. I have since been advised that there is no further route to take bar going to Court. I sought photographic evidence of the damage that was supposedly done whilst I had the car but, to my astonishment, this is not captured nor does it appear to be a legal requirement to photograph such.

So, in effect they electronically remove funds from my account, carried out a ‘repair’ and then I receive letter to advise me of deductions. In this day and age of British Justice – something stinks!

Same happened to me in Ibiza, Spain a few year ago. Lucky as I was, my credit card center claimed the money back and I am blacklisted worldwide at Europcar since then. This way I am happy and sure that I won't be able to make the same misstake again. I also tried to contact the Headquarter in Paris but that is another nightmare. Stay away from Europcar.

We are in talks with them for taking nearly £200 for a wing mirror glass that was stolen from our car (someone obviously nicked it to replace their broken one). They are impossible to deal with and we have been fobbed of on numerous occasions. I am going to try and claim it back through the credit card company after reading this thread.
