We rented from Europcar in Cyprus for one day (seven hours). The rental charge ended up being double the original quote. The skanky agent talked fast and didn't answer our questions, acting as though he was in a big hurry & we were a bother. At the end of the day, we left the car in a small, crowded parking lot (with several other Europcars), as directed by the agent. The car was in the same condition as when we picked it up. When we returned home, we found an additional charge of $576 posted for the next day. We are contesting the charge through VISA. We rent often in foreign countries, and had just left a rental car in Crete on the street for pick up, so although this practice is common, be careful about not verifying the car's condition when turning it in. And avoid Europcar at all costs.

    We rented a car in the UK in October for 22 days. When we arrived at the Europcar desk in Heathrow I presented my credit card and International Drivers Licence. The desk clerk declined the I.drivers licence stating that he needed my original South African licence, which I did not have so my wife had to use her SA licence and book the car in her name. I had prepaid £317.43 for the rental. When we returned the car to Heathrow a operative checked the car and I signed the slip that was presented. When we returned to SA we found that we had been charged an additional £367.22 on my wife's credit card. We have, without success, contacted various people in Europcar customer services, all of whom have been extremely unhelpful. In essence, from what we can glean from the undecipherable paperwork to hand, we have been charged twice for the rental with little bits added on. We understand the fuel charge, which was double charged and after much phoning and arguing, has been refunded. This refund, to us, means that there is definitely something wrong with this rental charge and Europcar is not going to admit it. So far we think that we have been dealing with call centre staff who could not care less about our complaint so we are going to the top in Europcar to get this sorted out. As for future rentals, we will never hire from Europcar again.
