I am getting unknown phone calls from 888-283-5118. Does anyone know who this might be? I don't want to call back because then they will have my number.

Call them from a phone booth.
Do they still have phone booths?

I might give it a shot. I will try to call from my office building phone.
One person reports being called in Canada. That may imply that these are not just sequential autodial calls, but from some list.

www.phonesearchcentral.com has toll free number reverse searches, but I think they're pay-per-use. They also have a really large free phone number search section too: http://free.phonesearchcentral.com which has assisted me on more than one occasion.
Well the bad news is ...they called you. So they already have your phone number. The good news is if they call again ask them: 1. who they are-it is a violation of federal law if they do not disclose to you who they are and what they are selling. 2. If their company has a DO NOT CALL list-failure to maintain a DNC list by any company is a violation af federal law as well punishable by severe fines. 3. To add you to that list.
If that doesnt solve the problem report them to the FTC at FTC.gov
