When you see an ad for a vehicle on Facebook that seems too good to be true, click on the name and check his other ads. You'll see the same vehicle advertised as much as 100+ times. Often responding through Facebook brings a response that you need to email directly, or the advertiser will just have the email listed in the ad.
On craigslist or similar sites, copy and paste some of the wording. You'll see several similar ads, often with different throwaway emails (yahoo, gmail, etc).
Buying vehicles locally is shady enough. You read an ad and the car is described as "Excellent condition" and you go look at it and it looks like it's been rolled. It "runs great" but the reality is that it needs a new engine. So if that happens locally, why trust one sight unseen?
