Car breaks down in the middle of the night and now they are blaming me

I got in a car accident several weeks ago and my insurance covered a rental car. That was great and all until, while driving the rental car at night, I hear something under the car that sounds like something is hanging off the car. I pull over immedaitely at the next stop and see a small black box was hanging loose. We did not hit anything and did not know what this piece of plastic was so we call roadside assitance. They were extremely helpful and made sure we were not in any danger. It was just after mid-night at this point and we had been traveling for over 3 hours. they said the closest rental car place was not open and that the soonest they would be able to get us a new vechile would be 11 am the next morning. They said they would cover a hotel for the night and that the tow driver would take us there when he arrived. It was roughly 3:45am at this point when the tow driver finally got there. We loaded up the car and headed for the hotel. When we arrived, the hotel was deemed unsafe. Even the tow driver said he would refuse to drop us off in that situation because of the dangerous nieghborhood we were in.
Long stroy short, the car malfuctioned on its own and put us in a dangerous situation in the middle of the night. I spoke with several people at the rental car service store and with my insurance with Geico. They all told me I did not need to worry about any additional payments for canceling the car early and that I was all set on the payments. 3 weeks go by and i receive an invoice from Enterprise Rent-A- Car out of Atlanta for $1,576.72. For charges i have no idea what for? I still do not. I almost feel like this is one of those internet scams to see if i will just forward the money without investagating. I have tried contact the numbers on there for a Teresa Stratton for over two weeks to get this problem solved and i have had no emails or phone calls back. I have even called close to 6 times in one day and voice mail after voice mail is all i am getting.
So now i do not know what to do. I am sure i am over my 10 days that i was supposed to make this payment because of the complete lack of communication on their part and i am afraid this is going to be one of those things that will go to collections and affect my credit... Even though i was never supposed to be charged in the first place.
the most important thing i am looking for right now is contact back from someone letting me know what i need to do to get this taken care of. This whole process makes no sense and i know it will end up causing me more trouble in the future.
