Country: United States

I got a call around 05:40pm today from a guy saying he is "David Beck" from USCIS, I had my doubts but still the caller Id in the phone matched the USCIS contact number. And he started to give my details which were all correct that I almost believed and gave my Visa control number, passport number etc.

When he talked about western union and penalty then I got suspicious and told him I will get someone directly fly and pay then he backed and started that they will contact my company and send the message that my visa status will be gone. When I said that is fine, he kept the phone. Although I'm worried about the I94 and the visa info I shared, atleast I didn't loose any money and my SSN.

Can anyone help on how this can be reported to the authorities so I'm taken care in terms of identity theft

Thanks

This is basically another variation of the fake "debt collection" shakedown rackets being run by Indan swindlers.  These scams commonly use what they think sound like "American" names, often names they appear to find on the internet, or even movie star or "superhero" names.

The "debt collection" scams commonly use VoIP for their calls, which not only allows them to appear to be calling from any US area code, but also allows changing the caller id information, including the phone number.  It appears that that may be what they are doing here.

Several similar complaints have appeared over about the last month, all indicating targetting of Indians working legally in the US.

Just like those scams often get victim information from sleazy or fake "payday loan lead" sites, this type of scam might be using fake job search sites.  Have you recently applied on any online job sites, entering the information that was then used in this scam?  If so, what sites?

The "debt collection" rackets commonly also call and harass employers or coworkers, if they have those numbers.  They are basically phone extortion rackets.  If you applied on a job site and disclosed your current employer or their phone number, they might attempt to subject you to similar harassment.

Report them to the FBI and USCIS.  Probably not much they can do, but they could at least post a warning.

You might also post a complaint with full description on 800nots.com, under the phone number that shows on caller id.  Potential victims commonly search on what information they have, including phone numbers even when spoofed, and an incident description just like what they just experienced is the surest way to convince them it's a con.
