This has been going on for 7 years. I offered twice to pay off loan they refused my offers. Then I became homeless because I lost my job.
I have had 5 or 6 collection companies I was told I could pay it off last year $400 which I did but they continue to harass me.no they are threatening me for $2187 that is more than I make a year. I am on social security.I need heap I can't afford a lawyer

There's your clue. They don't want the "loan" paid off, just a continual stream of money from continuing harassment.
They made an offer, you paid it, so move on.
As you found, paying them doesn't actually stop them from demanding more money, so don't pay them more. For all you know, each new "collection agency" is just "forgetting" the past payments. This "industry" is full of such scammers.
You're judgement proof anyway, since they can't legally garnish your social security.
