Has anyone been receiving calls listed from tel. number "514"  only without any other numbers?  Anyone know who this is?  They call 2-3 times per day without leaving a message.
thanks

Repeated calls per day, without leaving a message, follow the pattern of autodialed telemarketing or debt collection calls.

Sometimes caller id reports with just area code.
In some cases, it can be spoofed, sending whatever the caller makes it show.

Beginning in May I started getting these as well. If I answer, there is nothing there, except one time a recoreded voice said just the name of my business, which has a web site. That is the only way they would have found me, so I am assuming it's a telemarketer, since I don't have any debt collectors coming after me (right now, anyway!) Hope this helps.

I get a call from 514 every day. That is the entire number, nothing else, only 514. They never leave a message. 1 or multiple times per day. Who is this scum that keeps calling?

I got one today from 514... didn't answer (had my phone on Silent and wasn't near it, so it was a Missed Call). No message or anything. I wish these telemarketers and such would go to H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks.

I answered today.  The lady basicly read me my online business info,  confirmed my address first and last name the told me she was going to send me a bill for an online ad renewal for $390.00.  She then asked for a PO# when I told her I wasn't going to give her one she ok I'll just use your name as a PO#... I then told her I did not want an ad renewal as we already have enough business and to delete me from whatever list she got me from.  She said OK I will then hung up.  I have a feeling I'm still going to recieve that bill in the mail.  It's really too bad some people are such low life scum and can't find an honest way to make money.

Just got a call from "514" today.  Did not answer.  No message.  When I tried to call back, it just said could not be completed as dialed.  I'm sure it's just a telemarketing scam, so I will continue to ignore.

I get a call from this number as well but the person is very insulting and makes cracks against my business.  I find them to be quite rude and they keep using a fake southern accent.

I got a call this morning from "514" (no other numbers on the caller display, just 514) on my cell phone. I didn't answer.

I see my phone as if it was my home's front door and the caller display is the door's peep hole... And blocking their number or just showing a partial one (like just showing "514") is the same, IMHO, as to putting their finger on the peep hole for me not to see who's at the door.

Well, who opens the door without first looking at who's there? And who opens the door without actually knowing who's there? Do you open your door when somebody doesn't have the courtesy to identify themselves? I don't!

The problem with those people is that they think a phone is "just" a phone. They don't realize it's just like a front door and that certain politeness rules still apply.

I heard so many stories of calls received by somebody who refused to identify themselves and yet, demanded that the phone owner identified him/herself to this stranger and provide confidential information.

If a person would knock at your door with a brown paper bag over their head - as to hide their identity - would you open the door? and if you would open the door, would you answer questions about yourself, your friends, your or your friends finances without knowing who that stranger is? And even then, who says that the stranger really is who he/she says he/she is? It's over the phone, no number appearing on the caller display. They can say whatever they want, doesn't mean what they say is true. And don't let yourself be fooled in the case they have information (confidential or not) about you. Nowadays, it's extremely easy to get (confidential) information about anybody. Hey! If security cards can be falsified, what else can!?

Either way, the best thing to do is to not answer the phone.  If they really want to reach you, they'll leave a message. If they do and you decide to call back, make sure you don't give any private information right off the bat just because they ask it or say that it's procedure at their company. As far as you know, you're not the one "working" at that company, therefore you don't have to comply if you don't want to! The agent is working there and has to follow the procedure of asking you those questions - they HAVE TO - you don't! And if they say that they can't complete the call if you don't provide those information (ex: your current address, phone number, etc), they you can remind them that they were the ones asking you to call and that it doesn't give them the right to ask you private/confidential information. If it's a debt collector, remember that they make money whenever they're able to get someone to pay for an outstanding payment. So it's in THEIR interest to see this promptly resolved. Just don't let yourself be bullied into answering questions (and I mean ANY questions, even if they ask if you are this or that person coz then they put in your file that you have spoken to them - you just need to say that they called YOU and asked for you to call them).

In any case, if they ask you to identify yourself, ask them to identify themselves by providing an employee number and the name/phone number of their supervisor.  Then tell them that you're gonna call their boss to verify the legitimacy of what they're saying BEFORE you answer any question at all. If they do not wish to provide you with that information (which usually they'd have to if you ask them), then tell them that since they're not complying to your security procedure, the call cannot be completed! LOL

It's not because they're a company that you should abide to whatever procedures they have in place. If they expect you to follow THEIR procedures, they should also expect to follow YOUR procedures.

    monkey business
I have been receiving a lot of calls a day from a "514" (with no other numbers), and "unavailable". I answered  the "514" call the other day and it was a live voice, a male stating he was calling about my computer then hung up. The number continues to call several times a day. I do not answer. Then last night I received a call from an "unavailable" and answered the call. The man was the same voice as the one from the "514" call and once again said he was calling about my computer. I said "What about my computer?" He said  that my computer was sending out all kinds of spam. I asked how he knew this and he said he works for WINDOWS and that WINDOWS knows these things. I said , "REALLY" in a very suspicious way and he commented back VERY RUDELY mocking me. I then stated "YOU ARE A SCAM!" and he hung up. I do not have internet service on my phone and I am afraid of what would of happened if I did. BEWARE!!!!!!

I got a phone call from 514 this morning, I told then to take me off their phone list. He said it would be nine dollars to do so.. I knew that couldn't be true, so I insulted him, got him very angry and he started swearing back at me. At this point I told him to take me off his list, over him swearing at me for telling him to take a flying leap, a English speaking voice chimed in and said not a problem sir. I'm not sure what happened, but ill be ready for the next time they call.

They aren't going to do it out of courtesy, or respect for the law.
Give them an incentive, so they remove you for their own reasons.
Probably the only thing that works.
