New washer smells like plastic when running

We got a Maytag Centennial he top load washer two days ago.  I have done four loads of laundry in it so far.  Each time it is used we smell something that reminds us of a plastic smell.  Is it normal for this machine to give off this odor and how long until the "new" smell stops?  It does not get into the clothes, just the laundry room.
