Europcar:

I rented a car in Manchester UK in February, 2011, paid for the charge online through a website and took possession of the car.

Upon returning the car to the airport at approximately 5am, I asked the attendant for a receipt for charges.

He informed me that since I had paid for the car through the website, I would need to go back to them for a receipt.

I frequently rent cars during travel and ALWAYS, when I return the car, they give me a receipt for charges.

The attendant did not inspect the car, took the keys and said there would be no further charges to my card.

Upon receiving my credit card statement I found additional charges of $272.05 on my car, almost double what I originally paid for the rental.

I had received NOTHING from anyone about the charges.  I disputed with my credit card company.

They only provided me with sketchy documentation about the charges.

For example, there was a charge for gas.  We had filled the gas tank to full as I know rental car companies are notorious for ripping people off for the gas.

The attendant did not inspect the car and I had asked them NOT to charge me for gas, yet what did they charge me for????????

NONE OF THE $272.05 CHARGES ARE LEGITIMATE, THEY ARE NOT AUTHORIZED BY ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I find this highly unethical, highly unusual and very distasteful.  Is this how you treat tourists????????????

You know the world wide web is a great source for highlighting disreputable companies like yours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    New Avis customer/ Halina Europcar

I arrived at Birmingham Airport UK Europcar from czech republic . I was greeted by a polish lady named Halina. She looked very bored and miserable at the time. She was on her own. She decided to talk in my language when I’m perfectly fine in speaking in English. She spoke to me for over 30 minutes about my country and how she moved to the UK.

It’s not until I returned the car I discovered I was overcharged. I returned the car the the middle of January. I went straight to the front desk and made a complaint. I then discovered through the Duty Manager that I was charged for Value Cover I did not want it in the first place.

This Halina did not explain what it was when I picked up the car. I feel she was misselling. The duty manager said he will investigate but nothing has happened. I am very disssapointed with  Europcar. I will use Avis from now on.

EUROPCAR is doing this in other European places too. Be very careful when you rent a car with EUROPCAR in Bruges, Belgium. I was a victim of a big scam by the people at this office.  I was told it will be OK to return the car on Sunday even though the office will be close.  They said just park the car and drop the keys through the office door.  When I returned home to the US, I had a bill from EUROPCAR for damage to the car and another one for fuel.  First, I took pictures of the car when I left it at the parking lot.  The car was in the exact same condition as it was when  I picked it up in Dusseldorf.  There was no damage to any part of the car not even a scratch in the paint. Also, I kept a receipt from the gas station in Bruges where I filled the gas tank on my way to return the car.  My Credit card company has been trying to get prove of the damages from Europcar but so far in three months they haven't sent anything.  To me this is a scam to get extra money from foreign tourist.  The car was perfect when I left and the tank was full.  I know it and they know it so it is a shame that a company I used to consider honest will do this to its customers.  Stay away from Europcar in Bruges.
