Country: United States
This company has called me more than once and insisted that I owed 2700 dollars on a credit card I have never had. I just looked them up and there are many complaints about this company and their tactics of collecting. They tried to get me to give them my social but I refused and insisted that they send me something in writing. I am not sure how they got my cell phone number. And the date they gave me is more than 7 year ago. Please beware of this company the number that comes up is 1-800-772-1413.

PRA buys really old accounts, often out of statute (past SOL) and  tries to tag anyone they plausibly can with the "debt".

Numerous complaints are reporting attempts  to collect unowed "debts", including suing.  Some information is consistent with mapping out the jurisdictional variations in filing requirements to take advantage of jurisdictions with weak filing rules that may expedite obtaining easy default judgements with no proof of debt.

Complaints also suggest they may be using phone harassment to try to get some small payment they can claim resets SOL so they can then sue.

If you have further problems, such as additional demands for payment on unowed "debt", erroneous credit reporting, or a lawsuit, don't mess around.  Get an attorney.  You can find a consumer attorney through www.naca.net

      "...
The court ruled that Portfolio Recovery Associates violated the FDCPA by sending 990 consumers debt collection correspondence that simulated legal process. The package consisted of a letter plus a set of legal-looking documents, such as a draft Summons and Complaints. According to Lemberg, “The FDCPA prohibits dissemination of fake legal papers on its face. The court rightfully labeled Portfolio Recovery Associates’ behavior ‘unscrupulous.’”

Portfolio Recovery’s unscrupulous behavior was just one of the factors the court used in determining the $350,000 award. According to Lemberg, “We were pleased that the judge noted that Portfolio Recovery’s FDCPA violations were ‘intentional’ and ‘egregious,’ and that a sizeable award was appropriate.” Indeed, the judge wrote, “The sanction imposed must be sufficient to deter PRA from engaging in abusive practices in the future.”

Their practices appear to be focussed on using various tactics to obtain some small payment they can claim resets SOL so they can sue.  Other sources suggest that they are also attempting to exploit jurisdictions with weak pleading requirements, where little proof is required to file suit.  The above class action judgement is consistent with a focus on similar tactics, all aimed at obtaining easy default judgements. Such tactics can also be expected to work effectively even when the alleged debt isn't owed by the party targetted for collection.

Well that's funny because they are still in business and still calling. I don't even know who they are and why are they calling. I just don't answer.

I have received several calls from this number, last one today 04/22/13, they will not say why they call, they just want to speak to olga, regarding a credit card.   Today when I answered the called, the girl asked for Olga, when asked who was calling, she said Ashley, but would not say what the call was about, and hang up.  THey can be very annoying and rude, they insist they have the right person even you tell them NO.  I have NO DEBTS = they engage in abusing practice, and are very unscrupulous.

    Phishing 4 Data?
Sketchy.  They called me twice claiming a debt from 2001 telephone bill from an address I've never lived in.  They are rude and seem to want to gather more information.

Glad I am not the only one getting this type of treatment. They have taken over debt of some sort belonging to someone who had my number before me. When I get in touch with them they insist that I am the wife of the previous phone numbers owner. They've come right out and called me a liar and refuse to call me by my actual name.

They use many different phone numbers.  I have blocked each of them as I find out who it is.  I settled my account 8 years ago.  I just hang up when they identify themselves.  Annoying but cheap.

I just got a phone call from this number.  They do not leave messages and when I did pick it up one time I could not speak because the person talking would not shut up.  This is my cell phone they are calling so when I am not at work and it rings I attempt to answer it.  They are rude and threaten when the do ever leave messages.  When they call my home number I let it go right to voice mail and yet again no message left.  They are trying to get me to pay from something that is so far gone from SOL that it is funny.

if they send you mail and it has a postage paid envelope, send it back to them stuffed with all kinds of crap. get a couple of onions off your McDonald's burger and throw in there and maybe a fry or two. or you can "accidently" mix up the envelopes send the one with the stool sample your doctor wants to Portfolio Recovery.
how about getting old clothes and shoes or something else you were going to throw out anyway, box it up, tape the prepaid envelope to the box, and have them pay to take your crap off your hands?

I keep getting calls from these idiots in a number of incarnations. they've called about debts i supposedly incurred while i was stationed overseas. the latest one comes up under the caller ID as "Mall Nurse". WTF is a Mall Nurse??? I finally got a call blocker program and set it up so if your number is not in my phone book or contacts list, you're blocked. same as "unknown" or "private" numbers.

What program is that? Right now I have a few blockers, but whenever a new number calls it gets through. I don't want a blocker that blocks EVERY number not in my phone, just out of state, unknown, and 800/866 numbers. Curious to see what the best call blocker is.

Well I checked with a Legal person and was told by Law they have to send you a letter of proof of your debt and if they don't there is nothing they can do cause they are a scam from India.

Do not give them your address or any information cause they say they have you on file well then they should have it already and you let them know that and they might just hang up and give up, do not take there threats cause by law they have to send you a letter first,
