It is quite apparent that Craigslist doesn't do much to deter scam artists. They have a duty to the public to be aggressive about ferreting out scammers, but I see the same posters posting [***] postings every day. I can only wonder about how many innocent buyers have been sucked in by these people. The fact that Craigslist doesn't charge for their services (in most cases) is irrelevant. They are the "go to" source for buying things and they should be held accountable for allowing scum scam artists to run wild on their site. Perhaps they are a part of the problem?!

Craigslist's staff has never been large enough to handle all the scam/spam reports.  They rely mainly on community policing (the flagging system) to weed out most of the scam posts.
CL does have a page warning its users about scams:

    Quote:
Deal locally, face-to-face —follow this one rule and avoid 99% of scam attempts.

Do not extend payment to anyone you have not met in person.
Beware offers involving shipping - deal with locals you can meet in person.
Never wire funds (e.g. Western Union) - anyone who asks you to is a scammer.
Don't accept cashier/certified checks or money orders - banks cash fakes, then hold you responsible.
Transactions are between users only, no third party provides a "guarantee".
Never give out financial info (bank account, social security, paypal account, etc).
Do not rent or purchase sight-unseen—that amazing "deal" may not exist.
Refuse background/credit checks until you have met landlord/employer in person.
"craigslist voicemails" - Any message asking you to access or check "craigslist voicemails" or "craigslist voice messages" is fraudulent - no such service exists.
