I bought a smartphone for my college age son and had to sign him up for cellular service in Canada thru Rogers since he was going to UVIC when he started as a freshman last year. We told them the day we were in the store that he was a new student and we didn't want to be on a contract because he was going to be coming back to the states in 9 months for the summer and he would only be using the service while he was in Canada. I paid for the smartphone in full and was amazed when I called them to let them know that we wanted to deactivate the phone for a few months and reactivate it when he got back to Canada and they told me that they were going to charge me a $100 fee to change the data plan and that if i wanted to cancel the plan completely they would charge me a $400 fee for breaking the 3 year contract which I had. I had no choice but to go down to their minimal contract for the three months he was in the states and pay $25/month for nothing. When he got back to Canada he went into the Rogers store to change the plan back to a more active plan and they wouldn't let him make any changes to the plan because I wasn't there and I had been there with him the first time we were in there. They told him to have me call Rogers and take care of changing the plan myself. So I did. I called to tell them to upgrade us back to the same more robust monthly plan that he was on before since he was now back in Canada. They somehow lost the notes on that conversation, never upgraded his plan and he started racking up overage fees like crazy so that he racked up a $346 monthly bill before I realized what was happening. When I called them to find out why his bill was so high they told me he was still on the minimal plan he was on when he was in the states and that they didn't have any record of notes that I had upgraded him again. This is a huge racket.. I had them then upgrade the account and was assured we are on a month to month plan with the changes. The next thing I expect to find on his bill is a $400 fee for canceling the 3 yr contract even though this agent told me when she switched me to the upgraded plan for more active use that I am on a month to month contract going forward. If they charge me the $400 fee I swear I will get another service for my son and NEVER pay the bill. What horrible customer service and a total scam.
