I am currently installing a kitchen for a customer that was designed and purchased through Direct Buy.
During the installation process we ran into numerous design problems, cabinets that wouldn't accommodate specified appliance, cabinet doors that didn't line up properly, trim that there wasn't enough room for, on top of many other issues.

Before the initial purchase exact measurements were made and signed off on by both me (the contractor) and the Direct Buy designer. When contacted with the issue's we were told there is always a variance of up to 1 and 1/2 inches in all cabinet layouts regardless of manufacturer.

This assumption by Direct Buy is completely false. Cabinets are laid out to the 16th of an inch for a reason. Appliances, sinks, warming drawers and so on do not have variances on them. They come in specific sizes that require specific rough opening for proper installation.

Needless to say there is no room for error when it comes to kitchen cabinets. Certainly not an inch and a half to play with. To be honest when building a new home my company only allows 1/16 of an inch leeway on any given measurement (this includes the rough framing).

In the long run Direct Buy is refusing to take any responsibility for the mistakes and is requiring the home owner to cover the cost of the new cabinets and the extra labor to remove the wrong cabinets and installing the proper ones. Being the reasonable contractor I am, my company will be eating the extra labor cost to help take some of the financial strain off of the home owner.

Every company is prone to make mistakes, it's not a perfect world. It's how you remedy those mistakes that make you the company you are.

Unfortunately Direct buy Chooses to wash there hands of any responsibility once the check clears. In order to finish the kitchen with matching cabinets we have no choice but to purchase the cabinets through Direct Buy at a cost of over $2,800.00. In my opinion this is a trap with the potential to make huge profits off of unsuspecting customers. Sounds kinda illegal to me but what do i know.

Thanks,
Concerned Contractor
