    Ripped Off
    The owner Noam Sheetiat:

I am writing to you concerning a company who is ripping people off throughout South Florida.  I have given up on reasoning with the owner of the company and I feel others in our area should be forewarned against hiring them.  Follows is a further explanation of what transpired between myself and Noam Sheetiat of Giant Carpet Care, Inc..

On October 29, 2007 Noam from Giant Carpet Care, the owner of the company, came to our home for an estimate to re-grout our shower. We found the company in Clipper Magazine.  My main purpose in calling them was in their ad there was a coupon for shower re-grouting for $65.  During the estimate we discussed re-grouting the shower and the floor in the bathroom. We also wanted the grout cleaned throughout our living room and kitchen. He said he would do this, plus throw in sealing the grout (we supplied the sealant) and re-grouting a small area in our other bathroom, all for $400. I thought this was a little steep, but we agreed looking forward to the outcome. Noam was supposed to start the job later that day, but he called and had to reschedule until Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at 7:30am. Around 9am we received a call he was running late. When he did arrive, close to 10am, we had all the furniture moved out of the way for him in all the rooms so he could begin the work. He cleaned the grout downstairs in the living room and kitchen with his machine. After he finished the floors downstairs he went upstairs to the bathrooms to clean them and prepare for grouting. He did all of this in a little over an hour. Then he left and said he would be back in a couple of hours to finish. Several hours passed, I called him and was told he was doing another job and it would be another hour. After a couple more phone calls he showed up around 6:30pm. I told him over the phone it would be better to come back in the morning because we were taking our child trick-or-treating, but he said he was on his way and it wouldn't take long to finish. When he arrived I could tell he was in a big hurry. I told him not to feel rushed. After a few minutes he came down the stairs and announced he was finished.  I found this very hard to believe. I went upstairs and saw that he had sloppily “re-grouted” the shower. He showed me how he did it with his finger. He didn't clean up at all. There was “grout” (it just looked like a regular caulking gun with caulk to me) glopped everywhere and he missed several areas. I pointed out the areas he missed and witnessed him fill them in hurriedly with his finger. Both bathrooms were done very sloppily and unprofessionally. He also ruined one of our towels by wiping residue with it, and he did not clean up after himself, as he said he would.  I reminded him he was supposed to seal the grout downstairs also.  He poured the sealant in a mop bucket and proceeded to mop it all over the floor.  I voiced concern over this, as I know you’re supposed to only get the sealant in the grout lines.  He told me that it was fine, that he knew what he was doing.   During all of this I am trying to get ready for the Halloween festivities in our neighborhood. He said he needed to get his check and leave for another job. I told him I would prefer he wait for my husband to get home from work, which was shortly. He kept saying he needed to leave and couldn't wait. I had written him one check for $50 earlier in the day that he said he needed for gas for his van, then when the job was "completed" I wrote him another check for $350, both he asked to be paid to the order of "cash". When my husband came home he was very upset with the sloppy work. He called Noam and he came back to the house to go over the work with my husband. My husband let him know how unhappy he was with the work and he apologized and said he would fix it. After "fixing" it, which took maybe 10 minutes, my husband told him it looked a little better but it basically looked like a child had done the work and he could have done a much better job with no experience. Noam just apologized and said this is the best he could do. We did not ask for a refund at the time.  We definitely feel we were ripped off.  He did not even remove the old caulk first from the second bathroom. He just globbed on either grout or caulk on top of the old caulk.  The next day I attempted to clean the downstairs floor.  There was residue all over the floor from the sealant.  I called the sealant manufacturer and told them what happened.  The representative told me the residue could be removed only by scrubbing on hands and knees with baking soda, which I have still not had a chance to do.

All in all, Noam was a very personable person we felt comfortable with during his estimate. He even invited us to his house for a dinner sometime. However, during and after the job we found that he is a very unprofessional individual. The repair work on the showers upstairs is totally unacceptable, as is the issue with the sealant, and we feel we are entitled to a refund of this so-called work. He did not supply us with a contract and we did not receive a receipt.  We feel this, along with asking to paid in cash, are sure signs that he has swindled others before.

I called Noam and voiced concern and disapproval of the work. He began raising his voice to me and I told him I did not want to argue, but we definitely felt we were ripped off.  When I told him we were expecting our shower to be re-grouted, as he and his ad stated, he said no one would re-grout for the small price we paid.  I informed him this was false advertising.  Since then, I have not been able to find his ad in Clipper Magazine.  He said he would send a partial refund, but at that time would not say how much. After calling him for two months expecting a refund, I finally spoke with him again on January 2, 2008.  He said he decided not to send the refund he promised because he supposedly gave us a discount on the work.  I was appalled!  The following day I filed a complaint with the local Better Business Bureau.  Not surprisingly, there are currently
17 complaints registered with the local Better Business Bureau against Giant Carpet Care, Inc.  Apparently the company has chosen to ignore the complaints, leaving them with an “F” rating with BBB.  He did however, reply to our complaint with BBB.  In his reply he states that he refused to give a refund because he did the work and because he offered to come back to fix it.  He doesn’t acknowledge the damage he did to our floors and shower.  Of course I declined his offer to come back to our home!  I have zero faith in his ability, plus he raised his voice to me over the phone and was irrational.  He will never be allowed into my home again.  I also found several complaints against the company with a quick Google search.  I am including copies of the complaints, along with pictures of our shower taken last month.

I realize I made a grave error in hiring and especially in paying him in the first place.  However, we are victims of false advertising, contractual obligations not being fulfilled, no receipt of a promised refund, and damage to our property. We deserve a refund and want others to be forewarned.  The "work" Noam Sheetiat of Giant Carpet Care, Inc. performed in our home did more harm than good.

    Sincerely,
A pissed off customer, please stay away from this thief & liar.
