I received a call from some fast talking telemarketers saying that I am a preferred customer from the Credit Card company, they had my credit card number and they said would just send my all this stuff for just shipping and handleing, and would charge me month after month a fee if I didn't cancel within some random time period. I told them no, but I don't trust that they won't do  it anyway since they already had my account number..

813 is in the Tampa FL area.

There is no reason some telemarketer should be calling you with a sales pitch and already have your credit card number.  That is not an indication they are trying to legitimately sell you anything, just trying to record some "authorization" they can later claim was your agreement.  All they are looking for is for you to say "yes" at some time.

The number of "membership" or "automatic reorder" scams has been increasing.  They may either get your authorization on some initial "shipping and handling" not quite freebee, with the goal of running thru more expensive charges until you can figure out how to stop them, or sometimes they just get your account information and start charging you with no contact, claiming you joined some "membership" and "failed to cancel" in time.

If you have any indication your credit card or checking account information is in the wrong hands, immediately close that account, and dispute any fraudulent charges in writing thru your bank.

Do not use debit or check cards, and do not give your checking account information to anyone for making any payments.  Do not authorize automatic charges to your checking account.  Limit your checking account's exposure to fraud, since it is more disruptive to block and change than credit cards.

Use only credit cards to make retail or on-line purchases.  Limit checks to payments only to companies you trust, for things like rent, mortgage, utilities, etc.
