How Steyn Attorneys turned a R500 debt into R10,000

Steyn Attorneys charged Elias more than 10 times what he actually owes
The numbers on this statement are shocking.
Elias started out owing just R500 to a credit provider. Unfortunately for him, his debt was handed over to the notorious Steyn Attorneys. He ended up owing over R10,000. How did this happen? These are the charges Steyn Attorneys added to justify the 2,173% increase in Elias’s debt:
R8,344 legal costs (more than 16 times the original debt)
R1,168 VAT (more then double the original debt)
R1,123 “expenses” (unspecified)
Interest at 30% per month
5% monthly paymaster commission
The result? Elias pays R1,165 to Steyn Attorneys from his pay slip each month. Let that sink in. He pays more than double his original debt to Steyn Attorneys each month.
This is what happens when the garnishee process is not properly regulated- opportunistic attorneys exploit the legal process to prey on consumers like Elias (a mine worker) who don’t have the resources to fight back.
Elias has already repaid R6,751 on his R500 debt to Steyn Attorneys. That means he’s already paid back his debt 13.5 times. Nevertheless, Steyn Attorneys claims he still owes them another R4,117.
It’s worth noting that, similarly, the VAT charged on Steyn Attorneys’ legal fees alone is more than double the amount Elias actually owes. Steyn Attorneys have, unjustifiably, made thousands off of Elias.
It’s also worth noting the wording at the bottom of Steyn’s already unbelievable debt statement, which leaves the door open for even more charges, over and above those already piled on Elias. If they have their way, they may keep deducting money from his pay slip until the day he retires:
