I bought a Whirpool WFW9640Xw00 and after 1 year and exactly 1 month started doing a griding noise.  I called Whirpool and schedule an appoitment and a tech came and stated that the rear tub spin basket wheel bearing need to be replace......  well Whirpool does not sell just the weel bearings you have to purchase the entire rear tub basket and this can cost $300 to $400 pluss intalation.  Whirpool is aware they have issues with this and they will not stand by their prodcut.

Lowes is also to blame for selling lemons and not stading by the merchandise the promote on their shelves.  I went to mu local Lowes and they still have the washer and display. I complain to the manager and his answer was their nothing we can do.  I answer yes you can you can pull that crapy product from your shelves to protect your customer.

I would call Whirlpool, they have a program set up to ship the parts out to the customer and an authorized servicer can install them for you.

Sounds like a class action suit could be brewing.  I have experienced the same problem with may present washer as well as the one that I had 1 1/2 years ago that this model replaced.

Purchased a whirlpool WFW9640XW00 from our local Lowes in Lancaster.  Same manufacturing failure with the drum - the kid I spoke to on the phone basically laughed at our problem.  I left my name and number for the store manager.  No return call - so now I'm researching corporate contact information tonight.  Hopefully we will get help from someone for this whirlpool lemon.

I bought this washer (WFW9640XW00)  1 year and 9 months ago.  The bearing and drive is now bad.  Warranty is only for 1 year. I asked Whirlpool support if they will stand behind their product (because 1 year and 9 months is ridiculous).  She quickly responded no, sorry.  She must be used to the calls by now.
So if I want it fixed, I have to buy the entire rear drum and drive pulley. $450 total (includes tax & shipping). Then I would have to pay to have repaired... Another $200 or so.
I'll tell you what, This is low quality. I should have trusted all the bad reviews I read prior to buying this. I will never buy anything form Whirlpool again. If you do buy from them, make sure you get an extended protection plan from the dealer.
