I received calls saying I had a check returned from Sam's Club and I needed to make arrangements to send them the cost of the check plus a fee. Well 1st off, the check had been paid, 2ndly when I tried to call these people all I could ever get was press 1, press2 again, never a human.
I called Sam's Club about this and they were so upset. They tried to call the number and got the same thing. Finally they were able to get on their system and my check had cleared the bank and I owed no one anything.
These people still call me all the time and I have blocked the number on the phone and turned them over to local law enforcement.

Watch your checking account to make sure they don't try to cram charges for the already paid check and their "fee" through an unauthorized ACH charge. If this occurs, immediately contact your bank to dispute the charges as fraudulent.
Since they are a debt collector, they were required by FDCPA to send you a letter within 5 days of their first contact (phone call). If they failed to do that, they are in violation, and you can sue them for up to $1000 statutory damages, actual damages, and attorney fees. FDCPA also prohibits harassing or abusive calls, including repeatedly causing a phone to ring for purposes of harassment.
If your AG can't resolve this, contact an attorney with experience in FDCPA and FCRA litigation. YOu might try www.naca.net
I especially enjoy whitelist only: only those numbers I have EXPLICITLY approved MAY ring my phone.
Or you may wish to allow all calls but block all calls by area code or by area code + exchange: (800)xxx-xxxx or only (800)215-xxxx
your blocking options should include at the very least BUSY -- so the calling party cannot know the disposition of your line: in service, in use, out of service.
I use viatalk for this as I have settled my debts but still receive calls and don't want to be exasperated fighting with them. Unwanted call? After pickup phone and dial *BLK. That number cannot call again.
