Two weeeks ago, I finally call them back and asked them why they were calling us. They said they were calling a John Curtis and I explained to them there is no such person in this household. they insisted that in July they had talk to him on this phone and John promised to send them a cashier check. Next day they called again and I explained to them agian and asked them not to call me again. If they call, i will report them.
they call again today at 5:55 pm.
I think they claimed established previous business contaact as a loophole for continue calling harassment.

I didn't answer because it was a pointless and generally all 1-800 numbers are known in my area for scams anyway. They will claim they've bought someone's debt then harass in order to force you to pay. The irony is they have to contact my lawyer and if they continue to contact me they'll be fined every...single...time. Ha! People wouldn't default if they could pay to begin with. My advice is to contact a lawyer and keep a call log. If you do mistakenly answer don't get mad but DO RECORD THE CALL. Admit NOTHING and tell them to stop calling you as it's harassment. According to Texas law a conversation can be recorded as long as one member in the conversation is aware of it (great cheat right?). If they're debt collectors the statute of limitations is 4 years (and one day) in the state of Texas from the day of default, not the day a person stops paying/can't afford to pay. If you are settling debt make sure you have proof in writing it was settled and don't pay scam artists like these otherwise you are validating the debt is yours and that's how they get people on the hook for a dead relative's debt.

These bottom feeders buy debt for a fraction (10 - 30%) and demand you pay in full. Here's the rub. DON'T pay a penny and contact a lawyer. You can then work to verify the debt  within writing and without a lawyer if necessary, but I recommend a lawyer because they will contact a company like this and will order they stop contacting you. Why? Because you'll give them power of attorney and if they call you again it's a $500+ plus fine per phone call. If they produce some stupid spread sheet let them take you to court. They can't force you to settle the debt or make payments since that is NOT proof you owe them anything at all. I get calls with people thinking my landline is a bank or just junk calls so answering that line is generally a waste of time.

This number has constantly called my phone all day today.  I don't know who they are or why they are calling.  they never leave a message and I don't answer numbers I don't know.
