Charging for a year

I signed my 17 year old son up at Lifetime Fitness. I used my debit card the day he signed since his check hadn't cleared his account yet. The account manager told us you can cancel anytime with a written notice and you will no longer be charged. I specifically asked again...you are sure I can cancel no strings attached. His response was of course  yes.  No more then 16 days later I took my son to cancel. His hours were cut at work. I make my son pay for any extra curricular bills...if that makes sense. I knew it was too late to get the sign up fee refunded, but didn't think anything like what happened was going to happen. The first man I talked to advised me that I was locked in for a year, and that I would continue to have my card charged for that year. I demanded to speak with the person that signed us up. He of course denied everything. Says he told me I would pay for a year even if I canceled. That I am wrong and he tells everyone the same thing. Why in the world would I agree to such a contract? Yes, I'm the idiot that didn't read the long contract. I'm the idiot that actually took someone's word. After I left them gym I was getting phone call after phone call. First from the gym then from personal numbers. My fiancé finally answered the phone because I was in the middle of looking at a house since we are moving. The man from Lifetime would not take no for an answer. He hassled my fiancé to put me on the phone.  I blocked all the numbers they called me from. Such a horrible experience.
