Unbiased Truth about DirectBuy...

I worked at Directbuy in California for 6 months, if you want the absolute truth here it is.  DirectBuy is the worst company on earth to be employed by, associated with, or have a membership with!

Directbuy is a corporation that is franchised, which means that someone owns each center, so they are all run differently.  The one I worked for was Directbuy of Burbank California owned by Greg and Gail Ruetz.  They are absolute blood suckers!  They promised each employee a 401k when the center opened in 2007, not one employee has seen a 401k, any type of retirement plan, or even a christmas bonus!!!!  All they care about is YOUR MONEY.  They know nothing, not one thing about the products they sell, but you can be assured one of them will greet you with a fake smile as soon as you walk in the door.

From the moment you walk in the door, you will be preyed upon.  Its costs $6500 to join this garbage corp for 2 years.  They say they dont mark anything up, but there is a 8% handling charge on everything, isnt that a markup?  None of the employees are actually trained, I was thrown onto the floor and forced to learn about 800 manufacturers on my own.  Then, two weeks later, 75% of our staff was laid off.  Wow.  All the owners want is more money and more members!  To give you an example of the service you will get, our center has 1500 members and 3, yes 3 people that work in the service department!!  Unbelievable.

When you walk in the door, everything is set up.  From the way the greasy salesman shakes your hand to the "hows your day going so far" questions, its all script.  Then you hear the stupid story about Directbuy and they act like your friend with small talk.  Then, you watch 3 horrific movies about DB in a presentation that is much like a timeshare presentation.  After the ordeal, where they lie to you about many many things, then you are sent off to a high pressure salesman who will tell you to join or never comeback.  If you are not smart enough to smell scam at this point, you are simply weak.

Once they have your money, they couldnt care less about you or what you need.  The fake smiles go away, and the truth comes out.  You will wait from 4 weeks to 16 weeks for your merchandise, and if it comes in damaged, you will wait that long again.  Shipping is expensive and in most cases will bring the cost of the merchandise well above what you could have gotten it in the store for.

You will not save money at Directbuy unless you are remodeling a kitchen with $100,000 budget, and even then its not worth the hassle, problems, and the wait!!

I despise this company.  They are immoral, they treat their employees like garbage, and they lie about everything.

Bottom line, run away from Directbuy!  Thank god I no longer work there.  Now I can sleep at night.

Why do the suppliers sell to DB? If they are not treating the retail public well, I would assume that they may not be doing justice by their suppliers.

Here's the unbiased truth from a member.

    1. You do have to wait for stuff to come in (2-8 weeks).
    2. Most merchandise cost significantly less than retail or even websites(furniture, appliance, flooring)
    3. The savings on some stuff isn't that much (electronics, granite)
    4. Service varies by location.  I've moved twice since I joined - I had 2 clubs that had really good service and one that wasn't that good.
    5. I saved my membership ($4990) in about 2 1/2 years, spending about $14K.  I'm not rich, but I'm not poor either.

Would I do it again?  If you asked me in the first 6 months of membership, I would probably say no.  After 3 years, it's been worth it and now its paid off so from here on out it's gravy.  I'm not a DB lover or hater - this is just my personal experience.

I recently checked out direct buy. Asked a lot of questions about pricing. told them over and over again that we do our own installation and are looking at saving on materials.  They showed us some items that had some very good savings and we decided to give it a try.  Big mistake!!!  There was no saving on the items that we really would buy.  Fortunately for me I have a brother-in-law who is a very good lawyer.  He found all kind of contradictions in there contract and discrepancies in what we were told.  So we filed suit against the direct buy in Salt Lake City.  To make a long story short he got all of my money back plus court filing fees.  They are a scam through and through.  Someone might be able to save enough to cover the membership fee if you buy really high dollar items.  But for me I found things I really wanted cheaper on the internet than they were with the direct buy discount.  Stay away from direct buy.

I worked in Direct Buy's Telemarketing for about two months and hated the job and I was part of their scam and the reasons I got fired was because I said to my boss I though it was a scam and it is. In the telemarketing we make unsolicited calls for hours upon hours with the same scripted [***] and do much the very same thing as the nigerian scammers we tell them they will win 50,000 dollars and all these other bonus prizes and a three day two night vaction to anywhere all this [***]. The bottom line is nobody really wins except maybe one person once and a while. They have a [***] line like "Were going to send you a free information card with an official door key inside if the key turns the lock located here in the club you'll win the 50,000 dollar homemake over" and let me tell you the said people won't win [***] and the whole goal of the conversation is to get the people to take our packets with the keys.

Then a few days after the packets go out the bookers call the people we as telemarketers sent them out packets and try to convince them to come down and it even says in the booking script "show up 10 minutes early to try your key get your gifts and a cup of coffee before we show you around the club. If they decide to come the sales people do pressure them as was said.

I have been a member for almost 15 years and DirectBuy is not a scam as you say it is. DirectBuy is not for the ignorant. They save people a lot of money and yes I have saved thousands of dollars buying through DirectBuy. The problem with a lot of people they want cheap cheaper. Well DirectBuy sells a higher quality of product that that. You will not find your dollar store cheap specials that are shipped in from China and the like. Don't say things you really do not know what you are talking about. Shop there and see the savings for yourself instead of listening to a bunch of BS.

I live in MO where there is a 3-Day cooling off period.  But I didn't receive my password or login information until that time was well passed.  When I received it and saw the site, I immediately called to try to cancel my membership and an order I had placed (because I figured that was only fair if I wasn't going to pay the membership, they shouldn't have to fulfill the order) and I was flatly refused.  This was at the Direct Buy in Springfield, MO and the owner's name is Brent Fesperman.  I am really considering writing a book or some sort of guide for those thinking about Direct Buy with actual price comparisons (I've found that those quoted by Direct Buy are very misleading) experiences of members, short term and long term, as well as contacts for any attorneys who may be conducting legal action against Direct Buy.  If there is anyone out there who knows of any attorneys filing any type of case, particularly applicable to the state of Missouri, I would really appreciate your letting me know.  I actually believe that there are some who might benefit in the long run with a membership.  The trouble is that if this happens, it will be almost purely by chance because you can not get enough information from Direct Buy to make an informed decision.  I am keeping track of any purchases I make in order to tally up my "savings."  For anyone wondering, membership at this particular Direct Buy is $4500 - if you have the $1000 off / Trial Membership deal.  I have also been thinking about picketing with a sign saying how much the membership is - have to check the legalities of that.  Few people would bother to walk in the door if they knew.  Wish I had seen all of the comments before we joined.  Could have saved so much time and money.  If you're thinking about it - seriously, just go to Lowe's.

My husband and I purchased our membership in 2006.  We were building a home in 2007 and wanted to save money on purchases for our home.  We purchased many things from DB including tile, carpeting, furniture, lighting, plumbing fixtures, kitchen cabinets, windows, doors, garage doors, and even the wood for our house came at a discount from the local mill.  We figure we saved ourselves at least $50,000 which was well worth our membership.  There are a few problems though that need to also be considered:  It takes weeks to months for your item to come in.  If something comes in damaged - you have to wait for corporate to look at what happened, etc.. which takes weeks to months for a resolution...  If you are dealing with a specific person at the club - depending on who they are they may avoid your phone calls which can get very frustrating(esp when you have a problem)...  Other than those few minor problems, we are planning on going and purchasing a dining room set within the next month at a savings of $2,500 over the local furniture store for the exact same set!  Word of advice when you are signing up, take some pricing with you for specific items you may be interested in... and compare it to their books.. we took pricing along with us and this is how we came to the decision to sign up.  We saw actual savings on things we wanted and needed rather than the same old blah blah that they show you.  If you shop wisely, you can save a whole ton of money!!  Hope you find this helpful ~  Good Luck!

My husband and I bought into the membership program to save money on purchases for a new home, however, everythi8ng we try to purchase is cheaper in the stores  (well known brands)  we were told that the discounts would enable us to purchase items at less than retail prices.  So far "no" and we found out much later after their packet arrived to us that even if we never use this service or purchase anything we are obligated to pay this membership fee.  They refuse to let you end the account by threatening legal issues.  This happened years ago with health clubs but the legal system stepped in and put a stop to wholesale buying clubs!!!!!!!!!  WHY SHOULD ANYONE HAVE TO PAY FOR SOMETHING THEY NEVER USE OR NEED?  THE ECONOMY HAS DRIVEN INNOCENT PEOPLE TO TRY THINGS LIKE THIS INORDER TO SAVE MONEY ONLY TO FIND THE SCAM TO LATE.

We tried to tell the company the day we recieved the packet that we wanted to close our membership and get our money returned but they refused so we are looking for legal ways to stop it.

Direct Buy isn't a bad deal, IF you plan on some BIG purchases in the near future. I've been a member for a few years. They can save you money, but only IF you spend a lot.

Most of the real savings are in things like furniture. So if you plan on spending AT LEAST $15,000, and don't mind buying from catalogs, then check them out.

If you will spend less than that, don't bother. Dues to the shipping cost of your one at a time purchases (vs. truckloads that stores buy), it realistically takes about $15,000 to break even on the membership fee. I stayed a member for years just trying to break even...I eventually cut my losses at about $700.

Service was great there. And they do have a huge selection that is very hard to match. I just don't buy enough high end furniture for it to work for me.

Also, with the web and companies more and more utilizing direct purchases on their own, Direct Buy's power of price is diminishing...
