Unbiased Truth about DirectBuy...

I worked at Directbuy in California for 6 months, if you want the absolute truth here it is.  DirectBuy is the worst company on earth to be employed by, associated with, or have a membership with!

Directbuy is a corporation that is franchised, which means that someone owns each center, so they are all run differently.  The one I worked for was Directbuy of Burbank California owned by Greg and Gail Ruetz.  They are absolute blood suckers!  They promised each employee a 401k when the center opened in 2007, not one employee has seen a 401k, any type of retirement plan, or even a christmas bonus!!!!  All they care about is YOUR MONEY.  They know nothing, not one thing about the products they sell, but you can be assured one of them will greet you with a fake smile as soon as you walk in the door.

From the moment you walk in the door, you will be preyed upon.  Its costs $6500 to join this garbage corp for 2 years.  They say they dont mark anything up, but there is a 8% handling charge on everything, isnt that a markup?  None of the employees are actually trained, I was thrown onto the floor and forced to learn about 800 manufacturers on my own.  Then, two weeks later, 75% of our staff was laid off.  Wow.  All the owners want is more money and more members!  To give you an example of the service you will get, our center has 1500 members and 3, yes 3 people that work in the service department!!  Unbelievable.

When you walk in the door, everything is set up.  From the way the greasy salesman shakes your hand to the "hows your day going so far" questions, its all script.  Then you hear the stupid story about Directbuy and they act like your friend with small talk.  Then, you watch 3 horrific movies about DB in a presentation that is much like a timeshare presentation.  After the ordeal, where they lie to you about many many things, then you are sent off to a high pressure salesman who will tell you to join or never comeback.  If you are not smart enough to smell scam at this point, you are simply weak.

Once they have your money, they couldnt care less about you or what you need.  The fake smiles go away, and the truth comes out.  You will wait from 4 weeks to 16 weeks for your merchandise, and if it comes in damaged, you will wait that long again.  Shipping is expensive and in most cases will bring the cost of the merchandise well above what you could have gotten it in the store for.

You will not save money at Directbuy unless you are remodeling a kitchen with $100,000 budget, and even then its not worth the hassle, problems, and the wait!!

I despise this company.  They are immoral, they treat their employees like garbage, and they lie about everything.

Bottom line, run away from Directbuy!  Thank god I no longer work there.  Now I can sleep at night.

DirectBuy is a terrible place to have a membership and to work for! When I worked there you have to get at least 5 people a day to say there coming in but when they don't except the membership its your fault! As you come in the door all there fake smiles and how are you doing today are faked and scripted! They come back and complain to everyone about you! They don't care! All they want is your money! If you don't buy their membership don't ever come back! If you do buy the membership be sure to have your money right there on the table! They say there is no mark up on prices but there are! That stupid if the key opens the lock you win all the keys are the same! Its just something to get you in the door! If you do sign up for the representative to call expect 4 calls a day starting at 9am they will call and call! To stop getting them to vs you can't say don't call cuz that don't work you have to say "put me on the do NOT call list!" There a crap company!

My husband and I went to the Direct Buy warehouse in Peoria, AZ several years ago and sat through the pitch.  We were very interested, going so far as to sign the contract.  Wisely, we put the down payment on our American Express account.

In Arizona, we enjoy a 3 day cooling off period for this sort of transaction.  It came in very handy after we got home and did some research on the products they were offering.  Though we might have "saved thousands" on some very nice high end furniture, in truth the items we were most interested in buying were building materials and we would not have realized any savings on them over shopping with local Mom & Pop type retailers.  So we immediately signed our cancellation option and Fed-Ex'd it back to Direct Buy.

This is where my beef with them begins.  They ignored our request.  15 days after we had returned the cancellation notice, nothing had been done.  We drove back to the warehouse to speak with the GM (sales man) who had signed our contract.  He refused to speak to us.  We asked for the name of the owner and were shown the door, treated like trespassers or common criminals.  Now, that company had invited us into their warehouse and offered us a membership, we had not called them.  Anyway, they treated us horridly.  We immediately contacted AMEX and had the payment rescinded.  Then we reported their antics to our Attorney General's office and the local BBB.

If you plan to buy lots of fantastic furnishings and appliances, then this may be a great option for you; but if you live in the Phoenix area and are considering joining to for remodeling materials, you can do as well or better on building materials just shopping locally.  Happy Shopping!

Directbuy is absolutely garbage. You would not save a penny in fact you will end up paying more. Nowadays in the market if you shop around you will get a better price and much better service than Directbuy.
Directbuy Niagara is the worst company I ever seen in North America. They say nothing other than lie.

Don't join!  Every item that I am interested in, I find the same price or cheaper at some of my favorite retail stores.  What a rip off.  Been a member for over two years and haven't found one better deal by going through Direct Buy!  What a joke!  I guess I was in a very weak moment when I signed up with this place!  It was the TV ad they got me with!  Showing me 5k prices for tvs that they were selling for 1500 or so!  Yeah right!  Should have done my research and come back later!  They won't let you do that though cuz they know you'll never come back.  I won't even get into customer service!  They don't give a crap about you once you made the purchase.  Very Disappointed!

We are members of the DB in Coquitlam, BC, Canada and from our experience have only good things to say. We have been members for 10 years. Our membership paid for itself very quickly and we have only good things to say about how that location is managed, the deliveries, timing and all...we have purchased a fair bit of furniture, appliances, cabinetry etc. Only one delivery did not meet our expectations and that was handled promptly. We are not wealthy - have not spent $100k to get just  bit of savings - have saved a lot over time. Yes it takes some work and research but that should be done regardless. We did our research before the tour and sales pitch, went in with knowledge and can proudly say at last check our DB location has an A+ rating with the BBB. I think a large part of this is location and the owners. We are now on a list for a class action suit from the USA and I am quite annoyed that my contact info was made available, to be lumped in without being given the choice (we have to formally opt out by letter) and that our DB location is being discredited as well.
As with everything there are scams and those who will take you.....our membership was reasonable, we have saved, the service has been good and we have not experienced irresponsible owners.

Ripoff company. Run don't walk away. Nothing but bad experiences with this place. Everything I've ordered from there came in wrong. Inexperienced sales people on top ofthat. I ordered an expensive oven and didn't know there sizes we're the same for all appliances except for refrigs. Ae me the wrong size because all my salesperson thought about was trying to get a date because she was getting a divorce. Bought and expensive leather couch and they ordered it in the wrong dimensions. Took years to fix and after having the old one in my garage for another year and a half they called and wanted the wrong one back. I told them I was going to charge storage fees. These people are crazy. I think the manager just wanted a free couch. After being told this was a lifetime membership, after 10 yrs I get a boil for 2000.00 fr the renewal. Needless to say we didn't renew and forget about shipping changes. What a dump, with half the merc in the cataloges as no longer available. I needed help trying to find a Victorian style bedroom and asked for help with that and received none. Wound buying it at another venue. This place just stinks

I was the Controller for Directbuy for the first 6 months and much of what I'm reading here is not true, Greg, Gail, and Denny seemed to me to be very decent people, though they were extremely poor at managing money and even gave employees a bonus in Apr 2007 just after the stores opened when cash was very tight, which made little sense to me at the time.

The two things I know to be true is that there was an 8% markup and the membership fee was bumped up from about $5k to $6.5k when they opened the new stores in TO and Burbank.

I left the company because of Denny's daughter in-law threatening to have me fired and the way Denny supported this low end uneducated idiot.  She would thank people for their help as if she owned the place, though she was only about 20 years old and was an employee just like everyone else but because she was married to Denny's son, who was a very nice kid by the way, she acted as if she was everyone's boss.  Besides the economy and the ridiculous way they managed money, I believe another major factor in their decline was directly related to having family members work for the company...something Greg Reutz had an issue with early on.

Directbuy itself was not a bad idea but as the membership fee increased with the opening of these stores they diverged from what was reasonable.  They also relied on less then qualified people to run the Sales Dept., Denny's daughter in-law at one point was made the sales manager, which makes little sense since she was not very likeable and extremely inexperienced and, though this didn't last long, I'm surprised the Greg went along with this.

Either way, they eventually filed for bankruptcy and not only did both Greg and Denny lose almost $1 million on their investment, a bank in Lakewood and the SBA were stuck with about $2.5 million in worthless debt.

Either way, the company closed as a result of bad timing and poor management but as far as these people being "blood suckers", the person making this comment is just a disgruntled idiot and someone I probably worked with.

I went to DB 3 days ago and they were trying to sell the membership for 5999.00 and after 3 years you will have to pay $400.00 yearly fee. All I was interested in dinning set and sofa set.  I am not a  very smart shopper however; I try to look for good bargains. They talked about how much Macy's , Kohl's and JCpenny makes from us  and how much we can save with them. They don't give you enough time to think about it Or do your Own math. You have to make your decision with in 3 hours and then they say you are banned  from DB for 7 years. They know if you leave there is a small chance to come back because they were lying. I informed the sales rep the add he is showing might be true but I bought the same thing from macy's on sale and used my Coupon  for same what they are advertising. So, why I would want to pay $6000.00. I can Invest it some where else. We were the only young couple there were 4 more couple but in there late fifties. I was feeling bad for them because the sales rep knew they cant snatch money from Younger so they were giving all the attention to  Older couple. The sales rep kept going how much we can save in 10 to 20 years. I mean really !!!!! When i did my math in front of him I asked him  how he came up with this number saying that i will be saving about $5 thousand in 10 to 20 years. OMG, You could have seen his face it was like please leave me alone !!!!  I am not saying they are wrong they might be right But not for every one. If you building your own home (custom home) then it make sense. but even then I don't know if I would do it.   I agree with Sonia  and most of you . We did the same thing we ran towards the door holding my pocketbook.
