I signed my child up to attend Marshall Academy in Holly Springs MS, last May. Yes, I signed a tuition contract.  In June she injured her knee, and was going to miss the first couple months of school.  At that point, we decided to homeschool this year because of her injury. I told MA.  I heard nothing until more than 2 months into the school year, when they wrote me I owed them the tuition.  SO 1) it was too late for me to send ally anyway, they made sure of that 2) couple years previous another daughter had been signed up but didnt go and I wasnt sued for tuition and 2) yes, legally right to use... but Morally?
The Christian school goes after the single parent when they had no moral right to that money!  So I followed a lawyers advice and let her respond. Next thing I knew, I was served and eventually forced to come up with the money or I would be sued.  Now this is a small town and these people are supposed to be my neighbors !  They exerted no effort at all for my daughter - she was not in the budget, she was never tested or assigned any classes.
Wow, guess just because the door says Christian school, doesnt mean that is what goes on inside!

i agree...that isn't cool.  But, where, at any place, do you see that Marshall Academy is a Christian school?  I don't believe that they claim that anywhere.

    whatever
Christianity is what Marshall was founded on! They still offer Bible Study as well. Teachers are hired based on student enrollment, therefore, tuition is relied on to pay salaries. It is nothing personal that you were held to your contract. Many local private schools require your tuition upfront for that very reason!  I am sorry you feel like you have been betrayed by the close knit community!

Close knit is about right. Inbred would be accurate. Corruption is dead on. These people are not Christians, they are Bible thumping hypocrites! They spend more time gossipping and judgemental without facts. Christians are not to be anyone's judge or jury. Headmaster as leader the rest of the "flock" follow. Looks more like a cult or sinners convention than anything. For the cost of corruption-if this is the type of education you want for your children-this is the best for that. If you want a great education -GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!

Well I am a parent and I send my child to Marshall Academy and yes the tuition is kinda high but around here what choices do we have the public schools in the district where I live is not that great and I wouldn't send my child there.  I want complain about the tuition to much because my child gets a great education there and I am behind the school and teachers.  I am so sorry that some of you feel the way you do, but don't make the school suffer by your comments, the children that go to the school like the school and enjoy going there so stop putting it DOWN. GO MARSHALL!!!!

Haha a great education???? Yeah right.  Put your kid in a public school then tell me your child got a great education.  Your child will be so far behind and to what you said about the kids love it, I doubt that, they just have no choice.  Good luck sending them out in the real world.  They only thing they teach at that school is how if you have the money and kiss tail you get what you want and stepping on the good honest people is ok!  I understand you have no where to put your child and agree I would do the same but I will not take up for this school!  That school is so corrupted!

    Paying parent for 14 years!
I agree totally. Marshall academy is only there to cater to the children who have money...or parents who have money. It's a joke. Parents with money can have children who can get away with anything, but the average paying parent's child gets the shaft! Literally...labels...it doesn't take long for parents or kids to figure out which [***] you better kiss in order for your child to get any sort of education. Sports is the main focus! If your kid doesn't play sports and parents aren't loaded...drive the right car or dress a certain way or donate xx amount of money then don't send your child there please.  If you choose to ahead and send your child. Please be prepared to kiss ass to all the right people or your child will simply be pushed aside. It's a shame...Marshall county has no other options...which is why so many people are relocating. Just to get away from the Marshall academy cliche [***]!! It's a joke for a school...teachers coaches staff the whole program is just a freaking JOKE

    Bad Memories
I attended this school after I had been in a public school most of my life.  I graduated over 20 years ago and I can promise the remarks about "Having to have money" are so true.  I can not believe that after all these years, I finally see residents of this town truly see it for what it is.  I can honestly say had I not graduated from this school, I probably would not have made a lot of bad choices in life that I did.  They, mainly the parents, have taught most of these brats that you should treat others differently who have less and its a shame that those same ones don't miss church on Sunday mornings......The sad part that I had to learn later in life, most of them didn't have a pot to piss in.  All show......Thats what it is all about.......

    40 year resident- May 17, 2011
I have lived in Marshall County for 40 years. Moved in this area as a teen. My parents couldn't afford to send me to MA and the choices of public school were my only option. Marshall Academy was the talk of Holly Springs and Marshall County. It was known for its "Holly Springs social elite" families and as divided as this county is and has always been, the stigma remains. Yes it's a historical old town and hasn't changed much since the day it was founded, nor have the attitudes. As I grew up,I met many parents with good and bad stories of MA. How they struggled, scrimpted and did without to send their children to the school. Parents that spent their early days raising their families and paying for enormous tuition cost, and some for 12 years. These children are grown now and their parents have aged. With the best years of their working career behind them, some are still paying the cost. So many of the children gone now are scarred one way or another. True, some made it through to go on and see their dreams become reality, but they all have that thread of MA attitude intertwined among them. Our public schools are desperately in need of internal repair. Until someone realizes, it's not the new buildings, new location, or hipe about the test scores, things will not change and Marshall Academy will cease to be an option anymore. Churches are taking on the call to open schools, and daycares to offer Marshall County residents a better choice. A private school located in the Northern section of Marshall County, church sponsored, is making great strides in the education field. School the "old fashioned" way. Little is advertised about it, and I hear it's been in operation for several years. Friendship Christian Academy.....maybe this will be what Marshall County needs, God put back into the schools.

    Christian School
I have never heard this is a Christian School. The name does not reflect it and if you research the founded dated you will see it is about the time of desegregation....busing....same as most of the other private schools in this area.

    yet another paying parent
My child goes to MA and it most definitely is all about the money.  If you have a lot of money to throw at the school your child gets everything.  The only other thing that will get your child attention is being great at sports.  This school is more concerned with getting the sports teams to and from games than they are about getting children to school.  The students ride on a really horrible van, that breaks down often.  The driver was old when I went to school there.  I know he has to be at least 80.  But the sports teams have a decent bus, that seems to be in good condition and will seat the children so they are not packed like sardines.  As of the end of school they had around 15 children that were packed in this little van. MA is a good school but there needs to be a lot of changes made. A major change in the board of directors would do wonders.

    R-U-SERIOUS?
You can call it what you want.. .Marshall was NOT founded because of any "christian belief".   LOOK AT THE DATE.. Marshall was built when legal DE-segregation went into effect.. Built primarily by upper crust / finanically well of white people in the town to keep their kids from having to go to school with the black kids.. AND YES, I am white.. Holly High was primarily all white and Sims was built for blacks.. When the schools were De-segregated MARSHALL WAS BUILT.   You can cover it up any way you want, but EVERYONE who lives here locally knows the truth.. They can write it up any way they want saying it was "about education" but WE all know thats a lie..  When Marshall was built THE SAME YEAR, nearly all white kids in the city schools went to Marshall. Except the few who couldnt afford it or their parents had the moral ability to recognize a racist act in the making.  Holly high went 90%++ black... Dont pull no sheet over your face on this one.. We all know the truth.. If you dont I sure do.. I was there when it happened.. I grew up there.. HEARD ALL THE STORIES.. LIVED it.. Had several siblings that were still in Holly High AFTER the color "separation".  Ive had many friends from both schools over the year.. Black and white.. And BOTH sides know the truth.. It's undeniable.. People STILL separate their kids because they are afraid the color is going to rub off on them or something.. I dont know why the ignorance keeps going on.. BUT IT DOES.. And guess what.. IM STILL white.  Still got a pretty damn decent education if I do say so myself.. YOU may not think so, but Ive got the state exams to prove it.. YOUR KID learns what hes capable of learning and what you DO YOUR PART TO SEE THAT HE LEARNS>. I had GREAT black teachers and white.. I had several scholarships to major colleges when I graduated.. Who's Who.. Scored in the top 1 percent in the nation EVERY YEAR on my asvabs along with twenty something other MOSTLY black kids in my class.. If you think separation makes you kids smarter, well life is going to bite you in the ass soon.. LOOK AT THE GROWING ETHNIC statistics in this nation.. Let it sink in.. You will figure it out..

    soap box
I'm not sure what experience you had that made you bitter.  My child goes to MA and has had nothing but good experiences.  Academically it is a little tougher than most public schools but I would expect that out of a private school where you choose to pay for your childs education (regardless of the reason).  My children have attended large DESOTO County public schools and anyone who says MA isn't a good education must not be very involved with the curriculum.  Altough in any school, money does make a differance, I fail to see my children being treated any differently because I do not (cannot) contribute any money above or beyond the tuition.  The sports is a huge deal at Marshall.  I think that's good because it gives kids something to do where they are not given time to get into the "wrong" things.  Sports is important in every school, but as a small private school Marshall does get noticed because of their athletes.  I'm very pleased with the school and the coaches.  The only thing that I would like to see, is for the school to be a little larger.

    Love Marshall!
So sorry some of you feel the way you do, but I got an awesome education there and love the school dearly.  There is no reason to put down a school someone else loves in such an ugly way.  I'm so thankful for MA and for all the dear friends I made there and for all the dear children I teach in Sunday school who go there now.

This is the most entertainment I have had in a while... You are all correct.  It is NOT a Christian school.  It was founded right around the time of desegregation however they no longer boast the established dates like they use to... hmmm... As for education... I graduated top of my class at good ole MA - what a rude awakening college was!!! Especially the science and math classes. And english comp... my professor nearly laughed me out of class on my first comp submission and asked what state I got my education from! I DID NOT tell him MS!!!  Come on people that went there!!! You KNOW it was all about the sports and money! Did you sleep through it?!?!?  Oh - and the underage drinking behind Fitch's... The alcohol and cigarettes provided by the teachers or at least overlooked... if you were in that "in crowd" that is... the overnight sports trips with the room assignments that didn't matter "no coach, no boys in here" (ya right!)... ah the memories... Those good times and great MA education... ps please overlook my miss spellings - not the best speller bahahahaha

Yep, most of the grads go to Ole Mess, so they fit right in, same mentality, sports and party.  I know, I am a grad from “The Academy”.  If I had to do it again I would go there again, it is what you make of it.

    Ole Marshall Grad
I graduated from Marshall many years ago and am not connected with the school, but I know a little about what goes on there.

The school board was having problems with people registering for school and then not honoring their contracts. So, for example, 28 people might sign up for third grade and the school would hire two teachers. Then 22 people would show up and the school would have hired an extra teacher it did not need. A few years ago the school board just decided a contract was a contract and would be honored. It is not the duty of the school to serve as an insurer should bad things happen to those who sign attendance contracts. There is nothing un-Christian about expecting people to honor their contracts.

A little about the history of the school. It has always been a Christian school in the sense that there has been prayer and Bible reading. Six or eight years ago the school decided to increase the religious emphasis somewhat. Although the student body is now five to seven percent black, the school began with the court orders requiring a unitary school system for Holly Springs. At that time, in 1968, the Holly Springs school district was 70 percent black. Today I would guess the school-age population is 92-95 percent black and the public schools are 99 percent black (today most M.A. students come from outside the Holly Springs system). Various court orders forbade any type of achievement grouping. I know of no school system anywhere in the United States that has been successfully integrated with 70 percent poor blacks and 30 percent mostly middle-class whites. Our parents and grandparents were prescient in realizing that this grand social experiment would fail miserably. Many whites have now moved away from the area, but if it weren't for Marshall Academy none would remain.

As for the comments on school quality, the elementary school at Marshall is quite good. Math instruction has always been a bit lacking. Language arts has always been a strong point and I am surprised to see a former student say she wasn't prepared for college. Perhaps there was a lax year or two. The decision on whether or not Marshall is a good fit will vary depending on the parents and the ability of the child.

Concerning the original poster, since her daughter had to be home schooled for two months, and since she says she wasn't contacted for two months, there should be no loss. I'm sure she could have worked with the school to have her daughter do her work at home and then join her class after she recovered. In that way she could have honored her contract instead of getting on here to quack-quack-quack about how the school done her wrong.

    Outraged mom
I agree Marshall is based on what you have. I sent my son there for 2 years Nd now I regret it. The first year in kindergarten we found out his is ADHD...well m
Marshall has Nothing for these kids, I had a physical therapist come in once a week for my son.well he was retained in kindergarten, this year he went to first and let tell you I have never been so upset...Oh words cannot describe how I feel. My son was treated miserably.....his seat was put in the back of the room away from the other kids, he was handed papers to write all day, the Teacher insisted he was autistic, which out Dr responded by having brain tests, genetic tests.. The whole 9 yards, then he wrote a letter stating that my son was NOT autistic....they still said they disagreed, also I told the teacher that he came home and asked me "mommy am I stupid " her response was " He Knows ". Needless to say I have pulled him out of Marshall and pulled him out of Marshall and placed him in public school.... Where he is thriving! They are working with him one on one......his teachers are so good to him! It's great to see him eager to go to school now!

    Ole Marshall Grad
Outraged mom, I am glad you found a good placement for your son.

To help you do the math, tuition at Marshall Academy is around $6,000. The type of one-on-one education you are describing costs anywhere from $20,000 to $50,000 per year. At public school this is funded by the taxpayers; Marshall Academy has no access to such funds. I'm sure if you were to approach Marshall and agree to pay $25,000 or so per year in tuition in exchange for them providing your child with the services he needs that they would be obliging.

Almost all  of the children at Marshall are above average. There are few low-ability students and few geniuses. The school is not equipped or able to serve children with serious learning or behavioral disabilities. I think the school points this out in their handbook, and I would urge parents to read it before enrolling their child.
