deceptive sales tactics

This complaint is regarding Guthy-Renker,which is the parent company of both ProActiv Solutions & VitaPower supplements. I was a satisfied customer of ProActiv Solutions (acne cleansing system) for years, beginning in the mid-90s (before they used celebrity endorsements).  My mother got the account for me & I used the product for many years; we terminated the account only due to accumulating a stockpile of the product. Cut to this summer, when I opened an account with ProActiv for myself. There was an "Introductory Offer" of the VitaPower vitamins for $3.99, and I accepted it.  There was no information about how much the product was after the "introductory offer." When I received the product, it came with absolutely no paperwork - no receipt, no product information, no contact information, no way to accept or decline an actual subscription to the product.  Due to this lack of information, it was unclear that VitaPower was a separate entity from ProActiv.   The fact that there was no product information, receipt or any other paperwork gave me pause, and I did not want to continue with the product (I didn't try it; I  just didn't see fit  to add more vitamins to my regimen).  I should have taken steps to contact the company, but there wasn't any contact info provided with the product, and I promptly forgot about it ... until a month later when $33.99 was taken out of my account by the VitaPower company.  I did then contact ProActiv for VitaPower's customer service number and promptly called to cancel my unwanted and unsolicited subscription, only to get a very sarcastic attitude from the agent when I declined to listen to his lecture about cancelling without trying the product, and trying to keep me from cancelling the account.  I called back again to clarify about the lack of information about the product & subcription status with the shipment of the product & how it was a suspicious & deceptive tactic, to no avail.  I then expressed my displeasure re: the experience with VitaPower and the (lack of)information given when signing up for the "introductory offer" with ProActiv, whereupon I learned that VitaPower is part of the Guthy-Renker "Family" (umbrella company) and, in short, did not care about my negative experience.  I have subsequently cancelled my account with ProActiv.  It's shocking to me that they would be so unconcerned with complaints regarding these dodgy & cheap sales tactics, given that they actually have competition these days. Boo!

Guthy-Renker continually gives me problems! One year ago, I ordered Proactiv Solution, I tried it and was allergic to the ingredients. I sent it back, got my refund, and I thought that was it. WRONG! I started to receive annoying phone calls, trying to get me to buy more. I also received pamphlets from Proactiv in the mail.

Getting off their mailing list is a torture! I called the Customer Service number SO many times, I can't count anymore. Each time, they said that I was off the list, and wouldn't receive any more mailings. WRONG AGAIN! It's been eight + months of calling their support number, and the Guthy-Renker Corporate Office number (760-773-9022) trying to get off their stupid mailing list. Renee, an agent in the Corporate Office has been "helping" me in the last four months, and I'm still receiving pamphlets in the mail for the Proactiv! She said that the Guthy-Renker IT Department is looking into it and will take care of it once and for all. WRONG AGAIN, AGAIN! Although Renee has been kind and patient with me, MY PATIENCE with GR is about to the end. I HAD IT WITH THESE CROOKS!

So in conclusion, I would NOT recommend that ANYONE to order from Guthy-Renker. Their "Customer Service" is a complete joke and a lie, and the Corporate Office hasn't helped me much either. DO NOT ORDER FROM GUTHY-RENKER, or you'll be sorry! I wish I NEVER would have ordered Proactiv in the first place, I never really needed it anyway. So BEWARE of marketing tactics, once they get you in, it's hard to get out!

    Thanks,
    Ben (in PA)

I can stop them replies to Ben
It is fairly easy to get off their mailing list.  Go to www.usps.com and then navigate to the forms sections.  You are wanting a form 1500, a prohibitory order against the sender.  In your opinion if something is offensive (and the supreme court says you are the sole judge) to you, then open the mail piece, complete the form 1500 and attach the mail piece to the form 1500.  The address to mail the form is on the form 1500.  In about 10 working days, the post office will issue a prohibitory order against the sender and they have 30 days to comply.  I have had the USPS take action against the AT&T, against, a loan reduction scam artist in Texas known as Nationwide Consumer Savings who in fact had to hire a lawyer.  They did not stop mailing and legal action was taken.  I have also stopped DirecTV.  If I received a mail piece from Guthy Renker I would consider it offensive.  My first contact with these people indicates they are crooks.  They slid a mail piece under my security door but could not get it under the main door.  I found it, tore up the contents, enclosed them in their business reply mail envelope and am returning it to them.

Get the prohibitory order against the sender.  Be vigilant.  Every time you get a mail piece in violation of the order, send it to the post office.  Guthy-Renker will try to wear you down.  Eventually, the post office will send them a letter stating they have evidence they have violated a prohibitory order against the sender.  After this one warning, on the next occasion they will likely issue a show cause order which will require Guthy-Renker to show cause why they violated the order.  You can be assured you can shut them down like an overheated Yugo.

    February 22, 2010:
l ordered Sheer Cover from Guthy-Renker online and am still experiencing  fraudulent merchant practices from Guthy-Renker as follows:
    I. The product,Sheer Cover from Guthy-Renker, was ordered right after Thanksgiving, November. I paid extra fast delivery Sheer Cover from Guthy-Renker never arrived.   In December I called the  no-Guthy-Renker Customer Service line and the Agent a. Couldn't find the order then: b. Traced it using my CC # and it had been shipped to a wrong address which was 12140 Peyton Dr instead of 12840 Peyton Dr. c. Ordered another shipment to come to me if I once again , a 2nd time, paid for the extra fast shipping
II.  2nd Package still didn't arrive and once again I called the Guthy-Renker no-Customer Service line and the Agent  a.  Said that nothing would happen until I filled out an afadavit that said I never received the package, which as soon as it arrived I did....it couldn't be emailed or faxed to me (even though it was blank)..so two weeks end of December
III.  In the meantime I had also been in contact with the Agent at  Guthy-Renker no-Customer Service line and the Agent indicated that they would have to research my problem and of course  the Guthy-Renker no-Customer Service line Agent never contacted me and no doubt they're still researching the matter.
III.  Have sent documentation via Certified Mail from the bank that charges were taken out of bank account.  No Response.
IV.  Finally after all sorts of emailing and discussions with AGENTS, I received a package.  Now, that package was returned to the  no-response and no service Guthy-Renker Company and I am out $72.
    V.  Next I will send this complaint and email address to Agents atg the no-response and no service Guthy-Renker Company so they can read it themselves.
VI.  You Tube will be next.  I do want my $72 refund from no-response and no service Guthy-Renker Company

This is one of the WORST companies I have ever done business with. I ordered the "trial" of ProActive for $19.95 over 3 weeks ago and my product STILL has not arrived. I even payed extra for delivery within 5-7 business days. I called "customer service" numerous times and after waiting 30 minutes EVERY TIME, I got frustrated and hung up, hoping my product would arrive the next day. Finally, 3 weeks later, with no product, I waited for 47 minutes and finally spoke to Ray in Customer Service. I told him I wanted to cancel my order, simply for the fact that 1. I had not received my product within the 5-7 business days I was promised; 2. I do not do business with comapnies with crappy customer service, ie. waiting 47 mins. to talk to someone. I told Ray that I wanted to cancel my account and he said that my order was shipped 3 days ago and that they were on back order. I told him that I should have been told that at the time I placed my order, he said that the order takers do not know what is and is not in stock. He told me that if I cancel, I will then be charged the full price of $40 since I am canceling and cannot recieve the promotional price. I told him that GR cannot legally charge my card and that I will dispute any and all charges with my credit card company. Finally, he cancelled my "subscription" and when I asked for a confirmation letter of the cancellation, he said 7-10 business days - TO RECEIVE A LETTER!! I asked him if he had a confirmation # he could give me, the best he could do was give me his stupid badge number, yippee. I asled if he has a direct line so if I have any problenms, I can call him directly - of course they don't have direct lines! I told him they had unacceptable customer service and he blamed it on the WEATHER!!! I had to laugh in his face, and then asked him if it was snowing INSIDE their building. All in all, I would NEVER do business with GR again. I will find other ways to get the products if need be. WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY.

I too ordered Dean Martin Show...  I specific that I did not want anymore videos after the first.  I have a separate account that I keep that I keep a balance of $10.00.  Well they deducted $42.00 from my account anyway.  When I called to get a refund, I was told that on the infomercial stated that I had to call customer service to cancel the DVD.  And I could not get a refund until I returned the shipment that I have not received.  I am out of $42.00 and $35.00 NSF.  There has to be something that I can do!!!!!!

Cindy Crawford should be ashamed of herself for giving her name to the Meaningful Beauty products marketed by this disreputable company called Guthy-Renker!!!  No wonder she's so rich and famous!! How much does she receive from Guthy-Renker for selling her name and image??

Trying to help my sister, who has been hospitalized with a serious medical condition now for several months.  These jerks keep sending her boxes of Meaningful Beauty and VitaPower vitamins, charging her check card $39.95 per month for both.  I've called customer service, who assure me that everything has been cancelled, but the boxes keep coming!!  When I call again, they can't seem to find her in their records, but how interesting that they have her address to send the boxes of crap they call skin care, and cheap vitamins!!  The customer service person asked for the credit card the items were charged to!  Yeah, right, I'm gonna give that number to these crooks again, so that they can start charging more of their celebrity-endorsed crap to an unsuspecting, hospitalized person who can't speak for herself.

    Hi

I would like to suggest you call your bank and report these as fraudulent transactions and they will give you the money back. Citibank did this for me and issue me with a new card!

    Job done :)

    Uk complaint against dodgy sales
Steer well clear of this company, whether on the internet or via the T.V. They hide their subscriptions terms (monthly shipping of products - I wonder what Cindy Crawford would say) in the general terms and conditions, and when you discover you've been had, aren't interested in refunding your money or helping you to cancel the agreement. The result, the only way to cancel this persistent order is to cancel the card you used to buy it on.

I am still receiving fraudulent & unsolicited emails (Spam) from Guthy-Renker after I have sent numerous requests that the emails be stopped.
Each separate email in violation of the CAN-SPAM Act is subject to penalties of up to $16,000, so non-compliance can be costly.
These emails keep arriving in violation of the following provisions of the CANSPAM act:
the originating domain name and email address are not accurate and identity of the person or business who initiated the message is also fraudulent.
The law makes it clear that even if you hire another company to handle your email marketing, you can’t contract away your legal responsibility to comply with the law. Both the company whose product is promoted in the message and the company that actually sends the message may be held legally responsible.

"one time trial of the meaningful beauty" Has never been a option at the 30 day introductory/Member price, and if an up sell was accepted they are always 3X more expensive or 3 payments because they are bigger shipments not 3 small ones. Reading a invoice looking at the terms of a transaction is commonsense. Your move is your problem and your responsibility. The account with them can be looked up via address on record with them.

This is the second time Guthy Renker has charged me delivery/shipping fees for product they did not deliver.  It seems they have system generated fees that they charge for the company's they represent whether or not the product was delivered.  They then send you through a maze of hurdles trying to straighten it out.  I think Leeza Gibbons should reconsider promoting their "Sheer Cover" product.  If I had known Guthy-Renker was involved with their product I definitely would not have ordered it.  From the looks of the complaints here and some of the other sites they should be investigated for Fraudulent Business Practices.  I filed a complaint with the BBB in my state, my next step is up the ladder to see who else licenses and regulates this company so I can file more complaints until I find the government agency responsible for investigating this company.  Who is watching these people...?

I got a package (Meaningful Beauty) and returned the way they told me to, "Write refuse on the package and put it back in the mail". I did this about 2 weeks after I got the package. I've been calling them because they keep sending me a bill for this package and I keep telling them I returned it. Now the last time I called they said I have to show proof that I sent the package by providing them with a tracking number (How can I do that when they told me to write "refused" on it and put it back in the mail?) I said I don't have this because of the way they told me to send it back. I asked him to give me the original tracking number because that would be the way it was sent back, they said they can't provide me with their original tracking number...what? I got another invoice that stated they were now sending me to collections because I hadn't paid for the product...I called them and they finally said they received the product, on September 8th. I said great, now can we clear up this money that I supposedly owe? Nope. Becaue THEY didn't receive the package within the 60 days of their ship date, I still owe them for this product that I never used and had returned because I had lost my job within 2 weeks of receiving it. They want $130.00 for product that is sitting unopened at their facility. I don't know what to do and am stressing out about the money....they suck. :(

I too have just been taken for a ride by this company.  I bought Principal Secret Reclaim goods on what I believed was a one-off purchase in September.  Today they have taken £80.80 from my debit card.  I emailed them immediately to complain and ask for my money back but judging by the amount of people who haven't received anything (and the length of time it has been happening) I don't think I will have much luck.  Am going into the bank today to see if there's anything I can do about it.

I love Sheer Cover makeup which I now order off of ebay.  Gunthy Renker's company took money out of my account several times even after I cancelled my debit card and services.

Not knowing it was a Gunthy Renker company, I ordered Meaningful Beauty products and subsequently endured the same terrible stealing from my bank account.

After a long process, they eventually returned my money.

I literally asked the representative how they liked getting up and going to work every morning for a company that stole money from people.  She got me over to a supervisor who I asked the same of.  I told them this is illegal and they had 72 hours to return my money to my account before I sent a letter to my U.S. Congressman.

My money was returned within 72 hours.

    I hope this helps

Guthy Renker is a scam. If you watch their ads, they basically sell the same products in different packages. I purchased Meaningful Beautiful, which is about the same as Victoria Principle’s product. Only wanted and ordered the 30 trail kit on line to avoid the sales tactics. In bold letters, it states what you get and in small print, says they will start shipping you product every 3 months at a monthly payment of over $50 (w/shipping). I called and spoke to a rude customer service rep. She kept saying it’s on the site. So while I had her on the phone, I went to the site. Sure enough, it was there, which I missed. I asked why wasn’t that statement in bold to make customers aware of this agreement. Her sarcastic reply was she didn’t know and I would have to ask Guthy Renker. I told her to quickly cancel any pending shipments.

I also questioned the size of their 90 day supply. Per the 30 day trail size, the 90 day supply was only double. So they are trying to sell me a 60 day supply for 90 pricing. Her answer was all the products were not to be used every day. I quickly pointed out per their pamphlet, the mask was the only thing not to be used daily. Of course, she had an answer (excuse) for everything. No wonder GR is a multi billion $ company.

I then asked if I could just by the product as needed. I said I did not see it on the site to purchase separate, which is how they make big money. She said I could not online but had to call them direct. NOT!!

I can’t believe Cindy Crawford endorses this product. I really liked her, not because she is beautiful but because I thought she was a genuine good person, unless she is clueless. But I guess what does she care, just more money to add to her millions. After reading several complaints about this company, I read that Cindy does Botox. Is that false advertisement?

I suggest everyone run the any product GR sales. They need to change their marketing. Sure, right now they are raking in big money but it will catch up with them one day. Oh wait, they have billions of $’s to pay their way out of it.
