Woohoo! I just won $200 of gas vouchers, and all I had to give was my credit card number ("customer ID number") to verify that I was the card holder and that the card wasn't stolen. He said that it wasn't dangerous to give the front number because it's only the 3-digit number on the back that's personal and that no transaction can be made without it. That's why you only swipe the back side of the card. Actually I thought I swiped the back side because that's where the magnetic strip is. He didn't like my reasoning very much. I asked for a number to call him back, and he said it would do no good and refused to give me a number. Crazy! I can't believe people fall for these kind of scams. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

They are liars.
"all I had to give was my credit card number ("customer ID number") to verify that I was the card holder and that the card wasn't stolen."
They are liars. He's trying to record you saying the last 4 digits of the card number, which is one way of supposedly "verifying an authorization" for a charge by phone.
"He said that it wasn't dangerous to give the front number because it's only the 3-digit number on the back that's personal and that no transaction can be made without it."
He lied. You can charge a card with only the number and expiration date. In fact, with the number, you could try a bunch of expiration dates until you hit it.
"That's why you only swipe the back side of the card. Actually I thought I swiped the back side because that's where the magnetic strip is. He didn't like my reasoning very much. "
You are correct. He is a liar.
This is another fraudulent telemarketing scam, probably brought to you by those liars at "Central Rewards", in India. They've been running this "gas voucher" scam for years. You give them a card number, and you will start getting monthly charges of around $58, for these supposed "gas vouchers", which are worthless due to the limitations, if you ever even get anything from them.
What is truly amazing is that VISA and MasterCard still let them run through their fraudulent charges. Their latest is a "magazine subscription" con and extortion racket, claiming you owe "$2000 for magazines", ;but they will "settle" for just "$400".
What a load of crap! When he got to "what is the first # of your customer ID (card #) it will start with.." And he new the first number. When I told him I was NOT giving him any more info he started yelling at me. He kept saying " it is safe lady I just need this for verification." Well I don't do well with someone yelling at me.....so I told him to go screw himself. Believe it or not he kept trying to get info while yelling at me! I used some colorful language (he was still trying to scream over me) and hung up He also refused to give me the phone number. When I called the number he called from I got a message saying push 1 if you don't want us calling you and push 2 to speak to someone. When you push 2 it says voice mail box full. What a pack of [***].
They blew up my phone! using the number 8623675513 same thing asking for the numbers on my card, so they can "verify" my address and zip code and make sure it's not stolen. i refused to give them the number saying that i didn't feel comfortable giving that info out over the phone. I work at a hotel, i authorize credit cards all the time with NO INFORMATION ON THE BACK OF THE CARD just an expiration date. which the man also asked me. he had a thick accent saying his name was "James Smith" i [***] you not they called me 18 times in one day. never give out your info over the phone.
