We receive two calls a day from 1-800-242-5548 the America Reading Club, they ask for a person we do not know.  The calls started about six months ago, we have told them over and over that we do not know the person and they have the wrong number to no avail, we have had the number for three years, they still call.  We have called the phone company and placed them on our do not call list...they still call.  They called this morning at 8:10, they told me to send a copy of my phone bill with my name and number showing and they would take me off the list, I do not think so..... I will not send them any of my information.  Does anyone know how to get off their call list or where to make a complant that has teeth to get rid of these people, they need to be shut down.  I really feel for you all that have bought books and gave them your CC or bank info and can not cancel the account.

They have opened a new office in Minnesota called Reader's Club Home Office. They had an agent that worked for HSBC card services that was taking card holder information and selling phony subscriptions. They wre caught and proscecuted but Reader's Club Home office denied any knowledge. The phony subscriptions were turned over to VMS which is a phoney collection company. They are Reader's Club Home Office. They call the Victims day in and day out threating them to pay. When contacted by an attorney the hang up or ignore the letter. They are not licensed in MN. as a collection agency. The Attorney General of MO. is Investigating as well as the postal inspector and the FTC

I have these people calling me over a subscription that was cancelled months ago.  The manager had the nerve to tell me that if I didn't pay then it will go to collections.  This was because I would not give her my credit card information. I havent received a magazine and their trying to tell me I owe aroung $600 for magazines and I never cancelled in the alloted timeframe.  Thats bogus!

My disabled son, who has no analytical skills or short-term memory due to a brain tumor, has cancelled this magazine subscription numerous times.  The person he talks to says they will take care of it but a few months later starts taking payments from his account.  The company is now withdrawing two payments a month which he cannot afford.  Thanks to them, my son's account is now overdrawn.  My husband and I cannot afford to keep depositing money to cover their overdrafts.  Our son is no longer receiving any magazines and yet the company is continuing to withdraw funds.  I call this criminal behavior!

RIPPED OF BY ARC / NAMS
This is a scam and I am glad that you were removed from the BBB. Good luck creating a new DBA and starting some other BS scam. There is a wealth of proof available online for anyone to see that "ARC" or (whatever you call yourself)....is a scam. Good luck choosing a new DBA, and creating a new scam.

whoever you are .. thank you for identifying this scam and their Conspirators...  I lost a 1000$ to this scam and it's nice to see they are being sued by the FTC.

Unfortunately they are now calling them selves " North Atlanta Magazine Services " and the are continuing to try to charge credit cards without proper authorization.

They are also trying to "respond" to all of the BBB complaints filed years ago against them before they were removed from the BBB.

they called me and acted like they were confirming my magazine subscription that I already have with subscriber services and they even read me the first 4 numbers of my credit card. They were actually tricking me into signing up for another magazine subscription they didn't at all ask me if I would like to buy or tell me that they were trying to sell me any thing. The next month I noticed some unfamiliar charges to my account so I cancelled my card and the next week readers club home office called me saying I'm already in collections with them then he tries to make me a deal to pay it off he will take 10% off if I will pay off  in full right now I explain that there is a mistake and I'm not making an order for more magazines I already have a magazine company. I told him to cancel any thing further and he told me it was passed the cancellation date that was3/8/11 this is on 4/4 less than 30days he said "We have you solid saying we can charge you we have you recorded" I told him to "stop any further charges this is a mistake" then he got mad and started telling me "You don't live in a fairy tale world it dosen't work like that"  Then he hung up on me.

It's a common fraudulent telemarketing tactic to use the first 4 digits of a credit card to "prove" you are already a "current customer".  The first 4 digits specify the bank and whether it's VISA or Mastercard, and it's easy to just guess one of the large national banks, like BofA, Chase, Citi, or Wells Fargo, and have a good chance of guessing right.

The tactic has been used by Indian fraudulent telemarketers running "gas voucher" scams.

Did he already have your full credit card number, or did he read the first 4 digits to put you off your guard, so that you would reveal to him the last 12?

American Reading Club has NO OFFICE in Minnesota and has never heard of Reader's Club Home Office.  This is misstaken identity as we have ONLY one office for the last 20 years. With our customer's permission every order is recorded and an order acknowledgement letter is mailed to our customers.  We sell 5 - 10 magazines for a 2 - 5 year subscription.  Furthermore, every tape is reviewed by our customer service department before it becomes an order.
