Complaint

I have been contacted by a supposed law firm in California by the name of ACS.  They claim that I have three major charges in a law suit pending unless I pay an amount in the area of $533.87 right away.  I smelled a scam right away.. besides the fact of them not wanting to disclose detailed info also made this whole thing smell bad.  What can be done to prevent this and to put a stop to these people?

Just another criminal phone extortion racket, playing "debt collector" to steal money for phony "payday loans".

Most likely they are calling from India or Pakistan, not California.

"They claim that I have three major charges in a law suit pending unless I pay an amount in the area of $533.87 right away.  I smelled a scam right away..  besides the fact of them not wanting to disclose detailed info also made this whole thing smell bad"

You are correct.  The threats are illegal since they will not, cannot, and have no way to carry them out.  They make them to panic people into paying without checking anything out, like whether the "debt" is valid or owed, or looking them up, like you did.

I just had one of thid phone calls first a lady with a very heavy indian accent left me a voice mail telling me that it was very important to call them back or have my attorney call them so I called back and a guy answered the phone with out a greeting, just a simple "how can I help you" when I said "I don't know, you call me" he sounded confused told me to wait a little and then ask me for my name and then told me that I was going to be arrested on Friday if I didn't pay and amount of $497.82 but he will not give me any information as of from what or where than he said it was a pay day loan but would not give me dates or any other information, another thing that trigger me was that he did not wanted to give me the name of the "Law Firm" he was calling from until finally he said ACS so I google it right there and then and find out about their scams so I told him and he hang up on me. I reported them to The Federal Trade Commission.

That number is the FTC Do Not Call complaint number.

Unfortunately, that will probably not do much good with these overseas extortion rackets.

You are right. There is nothing that can really be done about these scammers. They run their rackets out of Indian call centers. I spoke to the FBI and BBB, and they're aware of it, but ultimately there isn't much they can do but warn people. They can file a complaint with the Indian government, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

What they think happened was some call center with a lot of Americans' information secretly sold name lists to these criminals. They keep calling me, but as soon as I get them off the script they usually just hang up and leave me alone for a while. Regrettably, they still call back. Now I just have fun with them, which pisses them off no end, but the longest any call has been is like 2 minutes before they hang up.

I tried to get a loan, and then did not complete the online forms because something smelled funny.  As much as a Pay Day Loan is a legal scam already, something seemed a lot more off than a three digit APR!  They started calling me about 10 times an hour.  Some politely hang up when I say I am not interested.  Others start with the screaming and cursing.  I hate to be a nasty person, and am no bigot, but.......  I finally got them to stop calling by using the nastiest most offensive slurs I could think of.  I researched online what would be most effective (Hint - Indians hate to be called any kind of slur that identifies them as Pakistani, hehe).  AND  this part is important.  Call them back repeatedly for a couple of hours.  One lady started crying, and her husband had to start answering.  She had been tough at first with her threats and insults.  By the end of one of my tirades, HE begged ME stop calling.  This sweet couple was purporting to be the IRS and "filed a lawsuit against me".... I am current with my taxes......  Use Caller ID block, and say things your mom would smack you for.  Nasty but it works, and you can get some frustration out.  Also, if you know how, and they are stupid enough to try to send you to a Trojan ridden web site (Microsoft scam) you can send a nice little piece of malware or mount your own Denial of Service Attack.  It is really fun to waste their time, anger them, and damage their computers.  You know that time you spent with them is time they will not be able to actually scam someone else.  That is the real victory when you helped avoid pain and suffering for someone who might have been vulnerable and fell for it.  After all, these low lives can be very good at the confidence game.  If you have an auto dialer - fire it up!  You can also spam their faxes all night :)  You are as unlikely to be prosecuted by Indian authorities as they are to be by yours.  Fact is, you SHOULD FIGHT when attacked.  I fight in the ring, and am taking that approach to any one who comes at me in the ring or in my wallet.  I am a heck of a nice guy, but once you start, it is on.... and I do not stop.  The last thing I want to figure out, is how to scam money from THEM.  Best of luck to you all, and remember - we invented every scam they are trying right here in the West, we first and are still the best at hateful behavior.  Jolly Green Giant - Ya know!

There is one thing they can do.

They have to get the money sent to them somehow, and often that is by Western Union or Moneygram.

Both Western Union and Moneygram have consumer warnings about various scams that use their services.

Those warnings are out of date, and make no mention of these fake "debt collection" rackets.

It would put a crimp in their operation if Western Union and Moneygram had prominent warnings against these extortion rackets.

DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION. This is a scam and they are very persistent. Go to this website for more information:

    https://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-877-882-5684

This is a scam. They use threats to con people out of money that you may or may not owe. They don't like being asked questions about their company (fake company), they can't give any information or provide documents about the so called bad debt owed. They tend to change their MO. Sometimes it's about payday loans or debts. About a year ago they were calling people telling them they were in a criminal suit and had a restraining order issued on them. This needs to stop. If they call, question them about their company. Record the conversations if you can and tell them they are being recorded. Tell them you are reporting them to the FTC, BBB, police, attorney general, FBI...and do it. The more complaints, the better chance we have of catching these morons. Here is some information that may help you:

    * They call from various 877, 866, 800 numbers and U.S numbers in various states. Sometimes the number will come in as 000-000-0000.
    * They may or may not have a middle eastern accent. They recently caught on that people weren't buying that someone named John Smith has a middle eastern accent, so they do have American accented people doing this now.
    * They will use phrases such as: Breach of contract, fraud, defrauding a financial institution, Internet fraud, payday loan fraud, etc.
    * They will threaten that you will receive one or all of the following: court summons, failure to appear, email from the company, etc.
    * They will threaten you with: jail time, losing your job, notifying your employer/family or both, coming to your house at night, physically hurting you and I have even found threads where the male callers have threatened females with coming over to rape them.
    * They use very common last names such as: Cooper, Anderson, Smith, Taylor, Logan, etc. Usually common first names too.
    * They will not give you any information about the company. They will tell you it's private information or that their fax is broken, etc.
    * They will tell you that you can only pay with a credit, debit or prepaid card. They will not accept any other form of payment.
    * They will tell you that you are a loser, immature, cuss at you, call you stupid, call you horrible names, etc.

Whatever you do DO NOT GIVE THESE SCUMBAGS ANY INFORMATION. Do not verify any of your information. Tell them they are a scam and law enforcement is working on tracking them down. Tell them you are recording them. Call them back and question them. Be sure to protect your credit because they have most of your personal information. Put a fraud alert on your credit file with all three credit bureaus. Report them to as many agencies as you can. And if you have ANY helpful information to add to this that will help catch these fools, please add it to this site. I am furious and ready to take these people down.

they called left a message today at my office for an ex employee.. they left this # 1-888-324-2336, they had horrible threats about sending officers to his home and jail.. and at the end of the message they said "CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED" I think this is sickening, they have the nerve to call up here like they have some type of right, and leave threatening messages, so I called back and told them that the person they were looking for no longer worked here.. Both the person who left the message and the person who answered the phones had English accents. I can't imagine how they could do that to people.

I got a call yesterday from an "unavaliable" number. Since I don't answer calls like that, I let it go to voice mail. There was a message from a black man speaking so fast, I couldn't understand what he was saying stating he was with Harris County (Houston) police department and if I don't call 1-866-201-1418 and pay a bill, I will be detained until my court date. Whatever! Harris County Police department? Really?!? It is called Houston Police Department. These people are complete idiots. I called the number and they stated they are ACS and that I have an outstanding payday loan. The man sounded to be American, possibly from the East Coast, not from India, but he was still a jerk telling me that once they send me my court papers, I have no option to pay them and I have to do it now. He mentioned jail time, garnishment of wages etc.... In Texas, you can't have your wages garnished due to a civil suit, especially if the loan company was from out of state and you cannot be arrested for not paying back a loan. I understand they are trying to do their jobs, but how about doing it legally and not being so slimy?

They aren't "trying to do their job".

They are criminals running a scam, trying to extort and con people.

The "debt" is fake, and the only thing you will get from paying it is poorer.  You might even get more threatening calls, since you are now an easy mark.

By the way, you might want to watch Niteline tonight.

A lady in West Virginia got a $10 Million judgement against one of these scams (one based in the U.S., in southern California) that pretended to be the local sheriff, even faking caller id, and she has been hunting them down.  She is VERY determined.

I just got a phone from a Tony Walker (he sounded like a black man) He asked for me I told him she "I" was not available. He said to have "me" give them a call he was trying to serve me papers and if I don't call them back in two hours they will have to come out with the authorities to serve me. I am so thankful I did my research and came across this forum...
