Dear Sir or Madam,

I received a My Little Pony castle as a birthday gift for my now one year old daughter this past weekend. The gift is not age appropriate, as it is for children 3 years and up, nor is it appropriate for us to take home to Mexico with us. I do not have the receipt. I attempted to return the gift for a cash refund, and was not granted this. The store manager (Maple Ridge B.C.) offered me a gift card. I do not live here in Canada, I live in Mexico, and though a gift card is not ideal for my situation, the manager insisted that this was the only option. I was disappointed, but I accepted reluctantly. I was issued both a gift card, and a receipt bearing the value of the gift card.

I attempted to use the gift card to make a purchase approximately an hour later, and the card had a balance of $0.00. The cashier called customer service, and the representative inquired as to what I was attempting to purchase. She told the representative on the other end of the phone. I was directed to customer service, where I was handed a phone number, and no explanation. I asked for an explanation, and was told that the manager was in a meeting, and that she had directed the customer service representative to give me the phone number, and to retain both the gift, and the gift card. I was very upset at this information. This representative was adamant that she was not going to return either. This, I respectfully suggested to her, may be considered theft.

I called the number given, which was out of service. The customer service representative offered me a second number, I called and got a message service. Since I did not know what the current situation was, I did not know what to say, so I left my name and phone number.

I then told the 'customer service representative' in the store that I needed to speak to a manager, to get an explanation. She said I would have to speak to someone at the number she gave me. I told her that I would not be leaving the store without either my gift, of the gift card. She then spoke again to her manager, and directed me to lift the phone to speak to 'someone at another store'. I spoke to a representative in an 'investigation department' . She advised me that I would not be granted a gift card, nor would I receive my gift back. (note that when I originally brought the gift into the store, it had a large fluorescent 'Zellers' security tape across it, which the original customer service representative removed in my presence) I advised the 'Investigations Department Representative' that I did not wish to leave the store without either my gift, or the balance of the gift in a gift card. She said that if that was my position, then I had 2 options. I could leave the gift, and the gift card in the store, while 'an audit investigation' was conducted to 'determine the original purchase information' of I could leave with the gift, and there would be no investigation. I questioned why there would be an investigation, and she assured me this was protocol for gifts returned without a receipt. I was employed by Zellers some years ago, and I do not know this to be policy.

Is it also policy to issue 'fake' gift cards to embarrass customers as they attempt to make a purchase? Is it also policy to refuse an explanation for this behavior?

I asked this representative to replace the security tape to my gift, and I chose to leave with it. I am absolutely outraged with this disrespectful behavior. I am not a thief, nor a criminal, and I did not behave inappropriately. I did not, and do not deserve this mistreatment. I was not offered an explanation for the actions and decisions of the management of the store. I have now left Zellers, with no resolution for the unsatisfactory product that was purchased in that store. I was not offered a substitution, an exchange, or the balance in a gift card. I respectfully demand an explanation for this substandard quality of customer service.

I would like to put in a complaint about your Zellers store  at Topsail Road St. John's NL. I already put in a complaint at the service desk at the store about a month ago but it has not been dealt with. I visited the washroom at this store a few times and I find the conditions  disgraceful. There are 4 stalls in the washroom 2 are out of order and each time I went there the other 2 stalls are not fit to use. Today the toilet tissue wasn't even in the containers, just laid on the floor and there also wasn't even any soap to use. Of all the public washrooms that I have been in,  Zellers is the worst. Actually they should be investigated by the dept. of health, I would say they would be closed down in a hurry.

Um..i workl at zellers as a cashier..and whenever someone complains about the bathroom, we call the stock people right away to clean up YOUR MESSES. Zellers cleans bathrooms every 4 or so hours. We can't help it if Your terror of a child [***] all over the seats, or your elderly grandmother misses the pot and pisses everywhere, or YOUR idiotic teenagers vandalize and plug the toilet. Heres a htought --FLUSH IT! Im a cashier, not a janitor, and Walmart is not a threat to us, we'd be happy for you to go there, and [***] at them.

To the my little pony lady -- I remember you, (ive worked at the Maple Ridge Zellers for several years ) you were screaming and not making any sense. They thought you were one of those fraud-ladys who always come in, so you got a zero balance. Our headoffice and security tell us to do this when suspcious activity is conducted. You, lady, were ranting and raving over the top the way most people who are trying to scam us do to try and bully us into your way. If you were civil, this could of been avoided.

Well, here's one.  Who would have thought you could buy a defective toilet seat!  I mean, how many ways can a toilet seat not work!!!!  This one won't stay fastened to the toilet.  Do i have the receipt - of course, not.  I thought when it was attached it would stay attached! I'm a senior citizen.  I'd really hoped at this age something else would rock my world!

Note the "or so" in the cleaning the washroom comment.  If your a cashier you don't know what the cleaning staff does, you don't know protocol, you don't use the public washrooms, so don't defend them. Should the customers complain to you, obviously not, but in a store where merchandisers/department reps are scarce and customer service lines too long, you're the only one customers see.

I work at the customer service desk at Zellers. I can tell you that the number they had provided you with is a theft hotline. It is usually given when there has been shifty returns without a bill. It does happen a lot and it is not our fault. It is in control of someone beyond us. I have had this happen to many customers but most are known for fraud and theft that they have done previously which in your case it is different.

I do use the public washrooms. I do know protocal. Our zellers is usually swarming with extra bodies. I find customers tend to take their woes out on cashiers. I was slapped by a customer because after searching for the items pirce tag & upc I had to call the department to have them search for the number and price. She told me the item was around 12 dollars (of course, we can't just type in 12 dollars...it doesnt work like that) I explain to her --and she gets angry and slaps me! then demands to see my supervisor. Of course I call -- and Security. The woman got a ten dollar gift card for assaulting me. And I got to go home early. Had she stuck around.. I would have filed a friggin assault charge against her. I had a red mark from where her (wedding?) ring was. (also it turns out the 12 dollar tiem..was actually 24 bucks.. )

I am so glad to know that there are so many people out there with the same distaste for Zellers as I have. I HATE Zellers!!! I bought a baby monitor from the Maple Ridge, B.C. location a little over 4 months ago. The monitor never really worked well but stopped working all together a few weeks ago. When I tried to return a couple of days ago with ALL the original packaging and receipt I was RUDELY advised of the "90 day return policy". She said there was absolutely NOTHING they could do for me as it was past the 90 days. To make things even worse, my sister returned the very same item the next day WITHOUT a receipt (claiming it as a gift) as was given a gift card for $19.99 + tax (I paid $ 49.99 + tax). As least she was offered something! I would REALLY like to know what the point is of having a receipt if they are NOT willing to anything for you after 90 days but if you have the packaging (and they still sell the same crappy item) you can return it years later WITHOUT a receipt and are at least offered something! When my sister returned with the gift card I was outraged! I went in and asked to see the manager (who was just a RUDE as her co-worker), gave them their STUPID gift card back and retrieved the piece of CRAP they sold me. I would rather take a total loss on the purchase than spend one more red cent of my hard earned money in that AWFUL, DINGY, DISGUSTING store. I have cut up my HBC credit card and plan to send it's remains to the head office in Ontario. I am so glad that there is a bridge to Langley now so that we can take our business elsewhere from now on...............Walmart here we come! I guess the costumer is NEVER right at Zellers!!!

i work at zellers and have been there for almost ten years.  let me tell you it is the absolute worst place to work and most likely the most poorly run company in canada.  building shelves and moving product from one spot to another is more important than providing customer service.  they don't even schedule people for customer service anymore.  it would not surprise me one bit if they close their doors for good in the next few years.  management have no business training or communication skills whatsoever and staff morale is the lowest i have ever seen.  they've frozen our wages, cut our hours, increased our workload and provide little to no training.  unhappy employees make bad associates.  bad associates force the customers to shop elsewhere.  no customers = no jobs for anyone there, including management.  it's a shame that the executive teams can't seem to get that into their thick skulls.

Zellers is an awful store, I shopped there for a while and the one floorwalker supervisor has seen me around shopping and she kept on following me and eventually ended up accusing me of stealing a soft drink (the convenient types that are near the cashiers).   It was so dumb and she was rude too.

I'm not going back there for shopping needs.  It's a crappy feeling to be accused of shoplifting.   Management is quite horrible (I know someone who worked there).   The higher ups only treat you respectably IF you sell credit cards as a cashier.

    Dear Cashier,

Your intelligence is obvious by your eloquent use of words such as "[***]". Bravo for bringing that to light.

Zellers treats it's customers like crap, they lie about pricing/thefts and  the cashiers are directed to be rude to people (the honest ones ADMIT THAT).

Walmart is not perfect, but they do give service and their prices are always honored. Service matters. Zellers will fold and soon.

I worked for Zellers for 5 weeks and in that time frame i can say the comapny is poorly managed they have too many rules such as when shift ends at night you have to wait for them to say "thank you good night" and if you go get your personal items such as your coat before that time frame you get written up.
This company demands that you sell, sell, sell, it doesn't matter if it's a senior citizen on a pension or a student up to their eyeballs in student loans they want you to sell credit cards, olympic mittens, and $1 donations. If that isn't bad enough you can't get enough hours they put numbers on how much you need to sell.
In 5 weeks i think i worked a total of 40hours not nearly enough to pay any bills.
They don't give breaks when needed or when required and they order the staff around like a bunch of dogs.
Then they won't give me final pay when i ask for it i get the run around and now they want me to pay for the uniform they GAVE me instead of getting it back.
They made me cry and when i was sick and couldn't even talk due to bacterial laryngitis they still made me come in only to tell me to go home cause i was too sick.
This is a very poorly run company which i might add was sold to an american company earlier this year.

The Zellers i worked at made us clean and i WAS a cashier as well. They expect you to clean if you have no customers or fold clothing people looked at and never re-folded. I hate to break it to you but Zellers sucks ass which is why i quit, and i cannot believe how poorly they treat the staff walking all over them like doormats.

I'm not shopping at Zellers anymore.  Last Thursday I went there just to pick up some catfood.  Suddenly the speaker overhead blurts out "security camera to sporting!"  I was in the pet aisle and decide to go to the crafting aisle.  "Security camera to toys," the speaker barks out next. Hmm, I think to myself.  This is rather rude.  I start to make my way over to the foods aisle and then the speaker says "Security camera to outdoor!" I don't know who the cameras were following around. It wasn't me but shopping there was very uncomfortable.  Went back 6 days later and same thing was happening all over again.  Shopping there is just 'too damn unpleasant.' Zellers is going to alienate itself out of business.  Anybody remember 'Kmart?'
