I signed up for Direct TV in August 2005, with a one year contract. I'm a grad student, so I knew I would be graduating in June 2007. After a year of interrupted service, and a summer during which my service was disconnected (even though I was paying for it in absentia), I called Direct TV in October of 2006 because my service was interrupted for a few days. As an apology, the customer service rep offered me 6 months of $10 off/month. I agreed, a little happier. When it came time to cancel, I received no less than 3 incorrect bills noting that I owed additional money as well as an early cancellation charge. To my surprise, apparently, the rep signed me up for another year's contract, even though she never mentioned it, and I certainly never would have renewed it since I knew I was moving 8 months later. Because of this, I have spent hours arguing on the phone with the customer service reps, who either cannot or will not help me. The end result is that I will have to pay the early cancellation charge, even though I never agreed to a new contract. There is no proof on either side because they claim it was a "verbal agreement". Truly the worst service experience ever. I will never use Direct TV, and in fact, I plan to be an anti-Direct TV evangelist to spread word for people never to use it.

    I cant believe what Direct tv has done to me!! They took more than $800.00 out of my checking account. They agree that it was a mistake but I still dont have money back in my account.  They assured me 3-5 business days. That has come and gone. they said it could be as long as 30days but that they will rush it through. Yeah rite still waiting..... My 7 year old daughter has been eating ramen noodle everyday and they say "oh we understand we're so sorry"  If they are so sorry why dont they put the money back in my account?? I have had the displeasure of dealing with such a company. They are rude, have bold faced lied to me, and they admit they should have never taken the money from my account.

    Why don't you all cancel like I just did?? I had them for 4yrs and went to HD with they said on the phone (when I switched ) that it would be free for 3yrs as long as they take direct payment from your checking acct. 1 yr later ( now) just got the bill and the credit is gone! Called and they said they no longer have that policy and so they raised my bill,,,,,so whom ever has that agreement ,,get ready cause here it comes. The differences is I told them to stick it and would rather do without their lies and [***] and go to someone else if I so desire. You need to get all the people u can together and QUIT all at the same time to send a message to all of them to keep their word. I am sorry I just found this site after I just told them today. If u people organize to quit the same time let me no and I will do it with U. But you need to CANCEL

    I have been a loyal fan of Direct TV for 14 years straight. I just called and cancelled and will never return thanks to Roku and free over the airwaves channels. It is a scam to pay $80.00 per month for 185 channels of useless crap. Then they have the after trying to get me to stay with them by offering discounts and when I refused, they just read down further on the "this is what you tell the customer sheets" to inform me that I am going to be billed for an additional $40.00 because of a replaced receiver in a second room. The receiver was replaced because the first piece of crap one I had burned up. So they sell me crappy electronics that fail , then charge me extra for contract charges because I had to replace the receiver? Really? The day is coming when bandwidths and available streaming content will destroy dishonest companies like Direct TV. Competition always wins in the end!

    Direct tv is the biggest scam out there. They get you signed up for a cheap price thru some second hand group, you give them your credit card to make billing easy and they totally rob you! i signed up for $45 a month service they installed the next day (put holes thru the roof!) but I never received a rebate because the "dude" who I spoke to had the wrong email address. I was starting a new job, have 5 young kids and just really crazy busy! Because it was on an auto pay I didn't look at my bill for a few months when I did!!!! I found out they charged me over $150 each month. They said I was supposed to send in a "rebate" to get the agreed upon price but now it was too late(by 7 days!)! Oh and by the way if I want to cancel then they will charge my credit card on file $340 for an early term fee. I talked to some jerk who said... " I have kids at home, I work and I still manage to look at my bills" . Unbelievably horrible service! I did finally work it out that time through the termination dept who "escalated" my acct and refunded my fees. I walked away feeling a bit better but each month they add the fees back in and I end up having to call back over ad over again. Each time I spend, no joke, at least an hour trying to work it out. Today they finally said I was simply out of luck and they were not going to refund my money. But hey they would "welcome me back at any time"! I should owe only $51 but they want me to pay $24 plus the $150 each month. I said forget it! DON'T SIGN UP WITH THEM YOU WILL REGRET IT!! Time warner looks awesome (and cheap) compared to Direct TV. A horrible business!!

      I so feel your pain.  The same exact situation with me.  First, the representative lied and said DTV had a bundle service, yet my cable and internet/phone has a different provider.  Then a representative said that I would have a small bill every month.  Another lie.  Every month my bill got higher and higher.  If I cancel then they charge you about $500.00 dollars b/c I am not dumb enough to keep DTV for two years.  I HATE DIRECT TV.  THEY SUCK

    As soon as u can,, You must cancel directv. It is the only thing they understand,,,,if you [***] about it and don't cancel,, please don't complain to me. I cancelled them after 6 years and now I am trying Dish. If Dish doesn't work I will get rid of Dish and just tell TV to kiss off. I will not take that kind of abuse from any retailer,,I never have and never will. You all have to get together and all cancel at the same time. I did so before I new of this web site or I would have said lets get everyone who wants out, call directv and tell them you represent 10,000 costumers, I sure if u put the word out on the internet and had names you would get there attention...tell them you all are ready to quite unless whatever issues you have are addressd  in one month or less and see what happens. Hell, you may have half a million, who no's if you don't try??????

      did you have to pay to cancel direct tv ? I live here in cincinnati, and it cost 400.00 to cancel ! I hate hate hate direct tv !  I used to have Warner Cable... wished to God I would have stayed with them .... They were prompt, and channels were easy to find , and most all the stations were available ... I want to switch back to warner , but can't aford the 400.00

    NEVER, NEVER DO business with Direct TV. They are con artist and frauds. they will not honor their own contracts and even told me they have "lost " my contract. They have billed me for 2 years and I nevr had servic ewith them. I cannot get it turned off. I finally ended up cancelling the Credit card so they would go away. Major pain. I cannot stress it too much, stay away from Direct TV!

    Had installation two hours ago..............Someone -- salesman ---   said we would get local pbs channel which is KQED.   You guessed it.............got pbs but not the local KQED we've been using and KQED is the local channel for San Luis Obispo.......They lied to us .......I HATE direct tv, too............My husband is on phone now trying to get out of contract...........damn it..........why didn't we read this sooner?

    well listen to this.i was told by one of the agents at direct tv that to keep my services on had to pay 85dollars.so i sent 90dollars through western union quick collect.so after i sent the payment in i called back to let them know that i had  sent the payment in the agent told me it would take only four hours to post.well i woke upm to find my services off.i called them to ask why my services was off and they said be                            
    cause of nonpayment.well i called western union to make sure they were lying and sure enough western union gave me a confirmation number proving that they did receive the payment.my services has now been off for three days and now they are telling that i will have an adjustment to my next month bill.i hung up on them and i am now in the process of contacting a lawyer to see if i have a case.

    I just got Direct tv a couple minutes ago i check to see if the channels i ordered were there and they werent i specifically named every channel i really needed to have. The lady I talked to assured me that those channels will be there! I have none of the channels I requested. The technician was given an appointment to install the cable from 4-8 p.m. he called me and asked if he could come in the morning. That would not work for me bcause i have work. He didnt even show up I called to complain and the woman was giving me attitude and did not seem to care. I am very dissapointed in Direct tv

    DIRECT TV SUCKS BIG TIME. Ok, so spoke with a representative to lower my bill. I get all the song and dance just to have my bill increase. Then I want to cancel and DTV says well fine, for almost $500 you can cancel. WHAT! i officially HATE DTV and I want to let everyone know that this company is a big scam. They lure you in with discounts only to slowly reduce all the discounts to nothing. Stay away...DO NOT GET THIS SERVICE. Now where else should I post so all will know. Get rid of this company ppl.

    HATE HATE HATE Direct TV!!! Had HD Verizon Fios for two years and absolutely no issues! Switched to Direct TV because they offer a few more Asian channels (my wife had to have her Indian TV shows) and it has been a nightmare since.

    INSTALLATION: First, we had issues just to get it installed. They came once and didn't have what they needed (even though we told them exactly what our set up was with Verizon) so we had to HIRE an electrician to run an extra line from the junction box in the basement to the outside. For the second appointment, we had to make a special effort to be back from out of town early to meet the guy and he didn't show up...they never put the appointment in the system, despite having confirmed it over the phone twice before hand...my wife even asked them for a confirmation email and they said no, the system couldn't do that! The customer service rep was a complete [***] and refused to even try to get a service crew to our house that day. She said that they had NO WAY of contacting the service technicians in the area! TOTAL BS! So it took FOUR precious Saturday's wasted just to get the equipment installed!!!

    LAGGING and FREEZING: Anyhow, finally got it installed and thought life could go back to normal. But now we've had it for five months and its been nothing but a hassle. It lags just switching channels, sometimes just 2-3 seconds (still unaceptable, but something you learn to live with), but very often it lags for several minutes just to change the channel or bring up the guide. It has also FROZEN several times. The DVR also lags on recorded programs, making them un-watchable.

    OVER THE PHONE SUPPORT: We spent an hour on the phone with a technical rep and walked through a full re-set and all sorts of programming checks. After a week or two it was clear that the issues hadn't been resolved.

    ON-SITE SUPPORT: They sent out a technician (good thing we got the $5/mo "protection plan". WTF! How do you try to charge people for service calls to fix a defective product that you lease to them! This is a complete and separate SCAM they run). He said the first guy hadn't even plugged it in correctly. He spent about an hour re-connecting and re-setting the system again. Three weeks later, it is still no better. Just had a program recorded yesterday afternoon, tried to watch it last night, and it was lagging (picture freezing and skipping) heavily every five seconds. Impossible to watch.

    I absolutely HATE Direct TV. I have much better things to do with my time than post complaints, but I'm so shocked that Direct TV is even in business, that I feel obligated to help spread the word that it is a completely worthless TV service and has no right to exist.

    Billing and product practices are outright unlawful.  You cannot do anything without it costing you $99.00.  Their sales reps lie and they are liars to get you to sign up.  We signed up and needed 6 receivers, REP says no problem I can only issue 5 with this promo but just call customer service and they will add it to the order without any problems........  That should have been my first clue - called CS and they told me that the REP was whack and that will be $99.00 please.  Initial installation was terrible leaving me to activate the last receiver myself.  DO NOT get hooked into their very unlawful practices.  My next email is to the California Public Utilities Commission.

    I HATE Direct TV. It is nothing but a scam to separate you from your money. It doesn't matter what the promotion says or what they promise you over the phone or how nice they sound - don't fall for it. You will find that once you get the installation, all their promises will disappear. You will not even be able to bring up the promotion web page on your computer anymore because they have blocked it. You will call customer service and they will deny everything. It is like the Twilight Zone. And on top of all that, they will tell you that you must pay the new jacked-up price every month for two years or they will charge you a $480 cancellation fee.
    To anyone out there who is considering satellite TV service - Run, do not walk, from Direct TV. They are a bunch of lying CROOKS. Don't end up like the rest of us who innocently wandered into their clutches. SAVE YOURSELF. Please.
    And I am looking forward to the day when Direct TV is finally held legally responsible for all the money (not to mention time and energy) they have stolen from innocent consumers.

    i would rather have my eyes gouged out with a dull pencil, than to deal with a direct tv rep ever again in my life. did i mention i HATE DIRECT TV? you get no help from anyone when you call them. best thing i ever did was to opp out of their contract. best $60 i ever spent.
