We received a latter from Handyman Club of America demanding that we pay "our past due membership fees". Our balance said $470! I've never heard about this company.

The letter didn't have any invoice number or phone number I could use to call them. I couldn't find their phone # anywhere including their website to dispute this matter so I e-mailed them asking them if they had any records of us signing a contract with them and of course I got no response.

Beware..  I was sent to collections for a $24 charge from this company.  They claim that I owe them for past due membership fees.  I never signed up for this, nor have I ever recieved anything from them except past due bills- which I promptly threw in the trash.

There has to be something we can do.. Consulting a lawyer first comes to mind. Isnt this defamation? They are ruining credit scores for something people never signed up for. Class action suit?  I think im going to check this out...

Collection agencies sleazy enough to "collect" on fraudulent accounts often know exactly what they are getting involved in, and may damage credit as part of their shakedown scam.

Send a dispute of the alleged debt to the collection agency, and file fraud complaints with FTC, yours state Attorney General, and the US Postal Inspector.

If they continue to harass you over this fraudulent "debt", providing no proof you owe it, you can sue them for violating FDCPA.  You can find a consumer attorney in your state through www.naca.net

Let's see what this RMCB collection agency is up to.

Complaint after complaint, collection attempts on fake "accounts" for products or magazines never ordered, over and over again.

We got another fraudulent "chicken biller" here.

File fraud complaints with FTC, and your state Attorney General.
File mail fraud complaints with the US Postal Inspector.

I have been a life member of the Handyman Club for many years. I was lured in with the benefits promise of becoming a life member. I was deeply offended when my benefits stopped, and they promised to give me even better benefits if I signed up to become a master life member. Recently an acquaintance told me that she used to work for the Handyman Club, and that it was a common practice for she and her coworkers to send the free tester products to their friends and relatives rather than to members. I used to enjoy the Handy magazine that I received in the mail, and kept them as a reference I could look back at when working on a project. Since they changed it to an online magazine, I haven't been able to view the magazine online because my computer is older. It takes forever to load, and more than 5 minutes just to turn the page online. It could be useful if they sent out a PDF version of the magazine that I could view offline, but there is no option to download a copy.

I've had that problem myself.  What I've resorted to is "printing".  Once the printer screen pops up, I hit the pdf button and it downloads to my desktop.  This is with a Mac.  I think with a PC you'd have to hit save as a pdf file.
