Spoofed Number - Unsolicited Call

Received call from Christy with Credit Card Systems going on about how they have finally reached me and this is the last call before they closed my file.  She could save me a $1,000 and wanted to ask a few questions.  The phone number on the caller ID appeared as a local cell phone number.  I declined to participate and she ended the call.  I called the number back and reached a lady with a very different voice who was not aware her number was being spoofed to make these calls.

    "lower your interest" scam..
They typically use out of country robodialers, but route the calls via VoIP to US-based call centers, often in the South, such as Florida.  Caller id spoofing is used to evade prosecution and lawsuits for Do Not Call violations.  FTC has shut down some of these scams, but it's like playing wack-a-mole.
They attempt to con targets into providing credit card numbers that they use to charge a "fee" for their alleged "service" of negotiating an interest rate reduction "with your credit card companies".  The usual outcome is that some sucker get a charge of around a thousand dollars, and then gets strung along with promises until the 60 day FCBA CC dispute period has passed.  In some cases where victims push through a chargeback within the dispute period, they get harassed with threatening calls alleging that they have "committed fraud".

I’ve had 5 calls today all from the credit card scam and all with local numbers. Usually I don’t answer but I’m expecting a plumber today so I have answered. One of the calls I spoke to someone in India and told them to take me off the call list, he said he would and just asked me to hold on the line for a couple minutes. I held but then hung up it didn’t feel right. Why would I have to hold? And they won’t take me off anyway. What really makes me mad is these scammers must be making money I just don’t know who still falls for this????

I received 2 calls today.  Christy is a robot that sounds human.  Why do the telcos allow callers to spoof caller ID?  I'm waiting for them to use my number again and get return calls from folks thinking it's me.

My experience with Christy from Credit Card Systems was a duplicate of SG above.  Christy called me 2 times in a row asking how much I had in credit card debt.  Ditto with last chance to participate before my file was closed.  Just now she called me a 3rd time.  Just doesn't give up.

It's happening here in the St. Louis, Missouri too.  Sometimes several calls a day, always from a local number, but never from the same number twice, so blocking numbers doesn't help.  Someone is falling for it...otherwise they wouldn't keep doing it.  I feel bad for those who might actually fall for it...elderly, disabled, children, etc.

"Christy" is just a recorded message with the end result of getting a "yes" answer from you. After that, you have relinquished your phone number, or given permission to charge something to your phone bill, or who knows what! Don't do it. Leave them a message that you will sure their company for harassment every time she asks "is that ok?". Maybe they'll get the idea.

Likewise -- I have received 4 calls today from a "Cindy", all in my local area code.  This seems to happen every Tuesday.  Sick and tired of these spoof calls.

Same as everyone else. Only thing I'd add is that all of these numbers, at least on my end, are local numbers (for me,) and they are all in a range that are owned/given by AT&T.  (503) 915-****.  I have 20+ of these numbers blocked.

I have been receiving calls from Christy for several months now. Despite my angry responses she still calls me using different numbers so I cannot block her. Is there any way we can have this woman locked up with no phone for a very long time?

notify "The Fedeal do not call administration" on-line listing as best you can all the phone numbers used by the caller, what time they called and what date the call was made. Even if you only have one or several dates & times of the inciming calls the Feds will track them down. The fines are heavy and go up as more complaints come in.

Robo call about credit card interest rates.” the caller ID showed a number with the first six digits the same as my cell phone.  I pushed one to talk to someone (my objective is to waste as much time of theirs as I can). I was transferred to a guy with maybe an Indian accent who asked, “how are you today” I said I am fine. He asked how much do I owe on my credit cards? I said I was not sure maybe 10 or 15K. (I don’t owe any money on cards.) He asked how many cards do I have and I said maybe a half dozen. He asked which Card had the most. I said my Visa. He asked which banks are my cards with? I said the First bank. He said what other banks and I said the Second Bank. He said Are you playing games with my time you mother F**ker. I said I do not do this for amusement. He started yelling at me that I was playing games. I said I am absolutely not playing games, I am very serious. He hung up.  I kept them occupied for 2 minutes.  If everybody could tie them up for only 2 minutes they would go out of business. BUT remember do not give them any valuable information!!

Got the credit card scam call today but there was no caller I’d. It rang once then stopped but the phone showed that it was “in use”. I was home alone so that was strange after a bit I answered and heard the scam credit card robocall. For years I have just hung up but now I’m getting someone on the phone to waste their time. The was, of course, from India. I said this was an illegal call because I am on the DNC list. He said ok and started talking and I just kept interrupting saying to put me on their DNC list. Finally he said ok don’t hang up and I heard the phone ringing as if he sent me to another extension. It just rang and rang so I set the phone down. Picked it up later and he was back on the line and said “whatever”. After me yelling at him for awhile he finally hung up. I’m kinda worried about having stayed on the phone so long. I then just unplugged my phone.
