I have received no fewer than SEVEN calls from them. Here's my story:

About 10 days ago-while I was not at home-my spouse took a call from these people. Regrettably, my husband decided o tell them our financial life story. Though our finances are not the best, they only amout to about $2000 (all medical bill balances) which we had already made arrangements to clear. My husband-being the innocent soul he is-thought nothing more of it. He did request that they call back later in the evening to speak with me (I'm the credit savvy person in the household). So when they called back, I thanked them but stated quite clearly we weren't interested and to please not call us anymore. I also wanted to know how they got our (unpublished) phone # to begin with. The woman I spoke with claimed not to know. That the first caller would have been the one to know but she didn't know just who THAT (1st) caller was. This (2nd) woman got quite rude with me so I, in turn, felt obliged to reciprocate in kind. She hung up on me. (that's call # 2).

They called again a day later. This time they asked for my husband. How they knew our FIRST names is also beyond me. Again, I asked that they remove our name & phone # from their records. Again, they could not/would not tell me how they had received our personal information. They called AGAIN about 2 days later. I told them the same thing. The next day we get a letter from them with a CD all about how they can help us resolve our debt issues. (Remember: we're talking about $2000 here). Yes, we ignored this, too.

After this 3rd call, we received a serious of 4 more. Three of which we just didn't answer the phone for. Today I got another one. And I came UNGLUED!! I had to threaten them with filing a harrassment claim with my State Attorney General for Gawd's sake!!!

What I want to know is; Just how did they get our private information? I know we never solicited them. Any clues?

    Jeffrey Katz,

I am not a licensed attorney and I don't work for Morgan Drexen.  However, I tend to deal in facts and cite sources.

From where did you get your "60%+ reductions in debt" claim, Katz?  Made it up yourself?

    I thought so.

Here is a link with a partial list of complaints against Morgan Drexen.

    http://getoutofdebt.org/16497/morgan-drexen-a ... ts-against-them

The NC Attorney General took action against Morgan Drexen:
    http://www.recoveryinthehighcountry.com/index ... d=181&Itemid=83

The NC Attorney General, Roy Cooper, Dept. of Justice, and the FTC sent out a July 1, 2009 press release on Operation Short Change and efforts at cracking down on debt settlement scammers.  Morgan Drexen is one of the companies featured on the FTC and AG's press release.  It stated that Morgan Drexen's attorneys "provided no meaningful services to consumers".   Katz, is it true that the NC AG forced an agreement with Morgan Drexen in which Morgan Drexen would stop "taking any new North Carolina customers and will offer refunds to consumers who paid an upfront fee"?

The Minnesota AG, Lori Swanson sued MD:
    http://www.ag.state.mn.us/Consumer/PressRelease/100222UnLicDebtSett.asp

If you can get a copy of Lori Swanson's complaint against Morgan Drexen, she gives a great narrative of MD's CEO, Walter Ledda, and his background and how Morgan Drexen operates.

A Montana couple, through the Heenan Law Firm, has filed suit against Morgan Drexen.

    Jeffery Katz,
Where did you get the "60%+ reductions in debt" figure?

Mr. Katz is curiously silent.  With all of the lawsuits pending against Morgan Drexen, he should know better than to comment on sites like this.  In all likelihood, he has no basis for the 60% figure.

There is a clause in the IRS code that if you are "insolvent" then you don't have to claim the savings as income. I'm no longer  in the business and so do not have access to my files, but I believe I also found it through the irs.gov website.

Again, if you are insolvent then you don't have to claim the savings as income. Check out irs.gov

Someone who personally knows the owner
It's not a scam. It's a rather large company operating out of Orange County. I don't know their quality of service, but I do know the company exists, has about 300 employees and does work to settle people's debts.

You can always settle your own debts and not pay the fees to have a company do it for you. You can even settle lawsuits. A debt settlement company can't stop someone from suing you, can't promise a settlement and can only legally require the creditors not to call you via attorneys. Now whether that stops the calls is questionable.

But think about it. You are defaulting on your debt. You owe someone money. Any debt settlement company is simply acting as a middle man to negotiate a settlement that you can always do yourself. The creditor you owe money to has to agree to this whether you do it or the company does it. The advantage of working with a debt settlement company is that they generally know how the credit card companies and collection agencies work. They know how low they can get a settlement for. They know what threats are valid and what threats are bogus.

The squawking about their being a scam or ripoff is a bit of the pot calling the kettle black. What are you doing but trying to get out of owing money that you borrowed? Isn't that a scam on your part?

Regardless of that when someone is in financial trouble and doesn't want to file BK, debt settlement is an alternative whether done by a company or by yourself. Doing it yourself is going to cost you less. But some people get too freaked out doing it themselves and so using a company is a workable solution.

My suggestion is that, if you want to use a company, look for one that does not charge large up front fees, charges only small or no monthly fees and charges you the least possible percentage of what they save you.

    Scammers
It always seems strange to me that someone has to comment on any good post automatically means they are scammers. What if they are not?

I am so glad I looked this company up on the web! I was going to sign with them but do to time I had to wait and I decide to find out all I can about this company, I am NOT going to sign with them. As far as I can see, and I have spent hours checking multiple sources, this company will do nothing you can't do for your self and cost you a lot less worry. I thank everyone who has posted a comment and I will advise anyone who asks to just read up on this company. Again THANK YOU.

Trust me.  They're not.  But they do understand the importance of maintaining the illusion that they help consumers and they make fairly sophisticated use of the internet to preserve that illusion.
