I received a call this morning at work and immediately recognized it as a scam since I have been receiving them for several months off and on.  I told him "I" was unvailable but would be glad to take a message.  He gave his name ( I had to ask twice to be able to understand),the company and phone number.  He said something about a legal matter and I said I did not need that info, but give the name and number.  Less than 5 minutes later he called a co-worker, threatened her with legal problems because her name was given.  I just happened to walk by her office and hear her.  She told him to send whatever and hung up.  The man gave his name as Gary Thompson and I checked that the phone is unpulbished from Lake Walesm, FL.  I have received other calls from numbers in San Diego, CA - 619-209-4469/416-364-1112 from Michael Smith
Kevin Parker - New York  315-663-2880
and others as far back as 9/2009

These are just a bunch of crooks extorting Americans into paying fake "debts".  They may be calling from overseas, using VoIP to make cheap calls, hide their identity and location sometimes using faked caller id, and appear to be calling from a U.S. area code.  Many complaints report they may be calling from India or Pakistan.

    You don't owe them ANYTHING.

Even if they appeared to have information on some debt you recognize, you wouldn't owe it to them.  There are reports indicating that they are obtaining U.S. consumer information from credit reports, skip-trace services, and phony on-line "payday loan" sites, which would allow them to fake claims that you "owe" them some "debt", using information from your own credit report.

File a fraud complaint with the FBI, although since they're in India, it's not likely anything will happen to them.

If they call back, just tell them you have reported their scam to the FBI, and you are recording their call for use as evidence.  Once they realize you can't be conned, they will move on to some other sucker.

    same problem
I have been receiving the same phone calls for at least a week, also from Lake Wales fl, also a man with a foreign accent claiming in one call to be Gary Thompson & another Neil Johnson regarding legal matters. They say I applied for an online loan of $200 in 2009. This obviously is not the case. If you receive calls like this do not fall for it, do not give them your social or verification of the last four digits. They only have so much of your information do not give them anything more. IT IS A SCAM

I just received the same type of call.  His name was Brian.  He told me that I owed some money (no amount given) and said that my social security number was being investigated.  Can anyone have a right to do this with no approval from me?  How crazy is this?

They are probably running this scam from overseas, which makes suing them impractical.

They are, however, vulnerable at two points:
    1)  Their phone provider.  They may be using VoIP, but most likely use the same carrier even though they may change phone numbers frequently.
    2)  Their method of getting the money transferred.

If the scam got that far, how did they say payment should be sent?
    Western Union?
    MoneyGram?
    Other?

Receive same type of phone call today.  Keith was the guy name.  Threaten to send law enforcement to my house and job.  I immediately called BBC.  Which in turn also told me to called FEderal Trade Commission, to file a complaint.  I did.  I also went to my bank, which I aLways check daily, to check on any deposit from PAYDAY ADVANCED, in December 2010.  NOthing!!!!!!  The guy kept telling me I couldn't prove that their wasn't a DEPOSIT made.  Well I Hung up start calling my local police dept, BBB, AND FTC.  THEY TOLD ME TO ASK THEM TO SEND ME A LETTER, AND I FILE A COMPLAINT, AND TO NEVER Call this number again.  The number that show up on my caller ID WAS 786 782,.

I have been getting the same calls from a Kevin Parker for over a month from (209)416-3888. It is the same voice that was calling me from another number until they realised I was on to their scam. That time they used the name Tim Miller and Brian Thompson. Do I have a Pay Day loan. Yes, but it is current and will be paid off next check. Their mistake was calling on my cell number when I was on the other line with the real Pay Day loan peopel arranging for a payoff of a currently up to date payday loan. They have threatened me with arrest & when I said they could not do that to send a process server they hug up. They called back with the same number Under a different name and started the same harrassment all over again. My question is if they cant be sued then what can be done? They call so many times that it is more like stalking that just plain harrassment. There must be some type of legal action that can be taken against these people.

Same thing happened with me. The guy called for my son, and he gave me all the info. personal info., I wasn't even the person he was suppose to be talking to, he even gave me my son's ss#.  I'm just saying what if I was a stranger pretending to be my son.  Jeeeez! This person would have my son's SS#.   He said the Atty.'s name there is Peter Black, and his ph# is 305-590-8811.  So I just might give this Atty. a call to let him know this is illegal, and this guy is giving out SS#'s over the phone to strangers.  Not professional at all.  This person had a heavy accent, sound India, or Iraq accent.  Very rude, and very demanding, made threats if we did not pay.  Hey! I'm not the one who owes you, why make threats toward me fool!

I work at a law firm. I hope he knows I am going to sue him.  My Atty. is my BF and I can get this done free.  I know this will help us all, when he's done with them we'll be owning this Co. AI'm sure.  "not a threat, a promise"!  This foreign guy called me from his mobile no. to threaten me just in case they were recording his harshe words to me, he even called me names that were inappropriate, he even "made suggestions of how I could make the money to pay them".  Not something I'd want to repeat, but I'm sure u can read between the lines. I recorded him, so I'm sure they coud do a voice analysis.  He would not give me his name. figures.

Lol I'm going thru the samething. This. Person keep calling and calling. Saying that I owe 380 dollers. F a loloan I took out from check in to cash so he said did u get my emails I say no and I check my emils all day every day and. I ask what's his name he said patrick green.  Did sound like he wasn't from the usa and he said. That check in to cash was sueingme. And I'm telling my self w...t....f.....  so I told him I don't have a job so I told him I'm going to fight it he said I don't thank u won't to do that ! I'm. Like ...ok this guy !!! ... then he stared telling all the resions on why I shouldn't.  Get a atterney. And just pay the money.  I said ok I will I need time I told him next month on the 6 . So as soon as I got off the phone I went on line and look at my account to check if any money was sent to my account. In the time fram he gave me and nothing. So I called the police station and she said this scam had been going own since 2000 and the police can't do anything. About. And just tell them to stop calling u. And that u talked to the police.  So....... then I got a email from patrick. That were forms to fill out. And send back to them.  crazy. Also the police said ask them to verify your full ss#   because all thay had on me was my email and cell number. So I'm going to email him back and say I'm not paying also a little more !!! But truly the only way I can black there calls is. Call the home phone company if there call it and ask them to block this number aslo. On your cell phone I hope u all have up dated phone. .. so u could just get a app. Called call control are  black list.  He used a 347 number. But hesaid he calling from. I would like to say thank you to everyone cause I have been getting these calls to from 813-344-1977 a guy claiming to be an attorney with American Law Division by the name of John Parker which with his heavy accent I had to get him to spell. Anyway he said I owed $400 and told me the last four of my social but couldn't tell me who the loan was through and he got the name of my bank wrong. When I told him he was wrong he asked me for the name of my bank and my checking account number with the routing number so he could check to see if I had received the money from the loan, that's when I told him I wouldn't so he then began to threaten me with suing me so thanks again everyone cause I didn't know what was going on.
