This is the EXACT same thing that's happened to me. When I signed up for the service on the phone, the rep "took care" of filing for the rebate for me. I was told that my second bill would reflect the promotional rate (34.99). When I got my second bill and it was still $60+, I called "customer service" and they told me that they had no record of my having applied for the rebate. When I asked what I need to do to get the rate, they once again told me that they'd "take care" of it for me. When I asked how long it would take to get the promo rate, they said it would take ANOTHER 6-8 WEEKS!!! I asked to speak to a supervisor, but was told there weren't any available. When I asked why it was going to take 6-8 weeks, I was told that it was the "corporate office" that handled that, and that the Customer Service area had no control over it. So, I asked for the phone number for the corporate office. Guess what.....they didn't have a record of it at the Customer Service center?!?!?!?!

I had direct tv in 2008 and decided to cancel in 2010 when I moved back home with my mother who subscribed to another cable company.  When I called to cancel the service I was told by the csr that I should suspend the service so if I ever decided to get diret tv again that I would not have to go through the same start up problems.  So I suspended the service and about 8 months later I found an email from them stating that I owed for two months of service because they had reactivated the service.  I was dumbfounded because I had not received any notification for service nor had I requested any service from them.  I was furious how are you activating service and to what address are you billing this service.  I had them cancel the service immediately and told them that I am not responsible for paying any bills since I had not received any service.  They are now trying to collect money for two months of service and have contacted a collection agency to get money.  This is the worse scam that I have heard of, do not listen to these csr when they tell you to suspend the service because they will try and reactivate the service without your knowledge and hold you responsible for paying the bills.

March 11, 2015: The Federal Trade Commission has charged DIRECTV, the country's largest provider of satellite television services, with allegedly deceptively advertising a discounted 12-month programming package because it fails to clearly disclose that the package requires a two-year contract. In addition, DIRECTV does not clearly disclose that the cost of the package will increase by up to $45 more per month in the second year, and that early cancellation fees of up to $480 apply if consumers cancel the package before the end of the two-year period.

DIRECTV also fails to disclose that its offer of free premium channels for three months is in fact a negative option continuity plan that requires consumers to proactively cancel to avoid automatic charges on their credit or debit cards, the FTC alleges.

DIRECTV is a national provider of direct-to-home satellite television services, based in El Segundo, California. With more than 20 million subscribers across the United States, the company is the largest provider of such multi-channel video programming distribution in the nation. The company offers its services to consumers through subscriptions, and typically requires users to agree to a 24-month contract that includes a programming package, satellite dish, other necessary equipment, and installation and support services.

According to the FTC's complaint, in many instances since 2007, DIRECTV has violated the FTC Act by making allegedly deceptive claims or omissions of material facts in advertisements and on its website for its satellite television subscription service. Specifically, the FTC charges that:

DIRECTV promotes its television service and programming package prices "for 12 months," without clearly and prominently disclosing that these deals require consumers to sign a two-year contract (with a substantial early cancellation fee) and that the cost of the programming packages jumps $25 to $45 a month in the second year of the contract; and
DIRECTV represents that consumers will receive premium channels, such as HBO and Showtime, "free for 3 months," without adequately disclosing that: 1) consumers will be enrolled in a negative option continuity plan that charges for the premium channels after the trial period; 2) consumers must contact DIRECTV to cancel the plan before the trial period ends to avoid incurring the charges; 3) DIRECTV will use consumers' credit or debit card information to charge them after the trial period ends; and 4) there are specific costs associated with the negative option continuity plan.
In addition to the agency's charges that DIRECTV violated the FTC Act, the FTC also alleges the company violated the Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act (ROSCA) by failing to clearly and conspicuously disclose on its website all of the material terms of offers with a negative option component.

Dealing with Liars at Direct Tv, I was told moving costs would be free so I agreed.  I told the Rep I'd only be at this one location for a short time, again moving expenses would be free so I agreed to their services.  I have spent numerous hrs on the phone getting the run around about why I should pay, cannot talk to a Manager, they will have someone call me back...no call backs, just me calling again.  Then, I need to email them for Management involvement. So, email to them thru contact us to have a returned email stating "sorry but we can change contract terms." Still no call back from them til I %$#!&ed some more today. To get a call that was a Waste of my time, now @ 5.5 hrs of my time.  Yep, to get a PO Box where I can mail a letter.  When I asked for a fax # to send I was told they dont have that. Really, its 2013 people, every Company has a fax.  So, Googling the address gave me a # which I called and got someone that use to work for them in Wyoming.  He said dont let them F%$# you over...oh, this chick won't.  Verbal & written in the court of law are looked upon the same.  Direct Tv are liars, their Reps/Sups/Managers are poorly trained.  I will get to the bottom of this with their President..Customer is always right is not a policy they follow!....tired of their BS.

My wife and I moved into a new home about 8 or 9 months after activating DirecTV.  We were told when signing up that DirecTV does free mover specials as long as you stay in your 2 year contract.  When it came time to move they wanted $280.  My wife and I evaluated our TV watching habits and determined we just don't watch enough to keep it.  We opted to cancel.  They sent us a new bill with the cancellation and the movers fee attached (a nice $500 bill from a TV company).  I called them up and they admitted their mistake.  I asked them to please cut me a new bill with the movers fee removed and just the cancellation fee and I will happily pay it-they agreed to cut me a new bill which I could pay once I received it.  Then, about 2 1/2 hours from my house I became stranded at a gas station because my credit card was declined.  My wife and 2 kids under 3 got to get into a car and drive to pay for my gas as I sat at the gas station.   When I called all they were willing to do was refund the movers fee which never should have been on there in the first place.  They would do nothing else to make things right for their "screw up" as the manager called it.  The manager's name was Thomas and refused to give me his last name or the number or email address of his manager whose name was Matt.  I have no way of contacting anyone else.  He said I could mail a letter to the president but would not give me his name either.  This company sure is awfully sercretive; they have to be with all the [***] they pull.  If it wasn't for NFL Sunday ticket this company would fall to the ground but every liquor establishment has to sign up for DirecTV to get patrons in their doors.  Whatever they are paying the NFL it isn't enough.  I will never go back to DirecTV and will warn all those considering.  Extreamly unhappy about their lack of an interest in making things right.

Direct TV is not a good service provider and you can not believe anything that they tell you. They lied to me about an issue that I was having with my account and when I called their hand on it they refused to stand behind an agreement that their reps had made with me and now they want me to pay for their mistakes. I fully intend to consult an attorney about this issue and I am going to seek tv service somewhere else. I intend to contact the attorney general in my state, and the Better Business Bureau also. My advice to all, stay far far away from Direct TV !
