Telemarketer called my number and asked if this was _____ (my name?)
I asked, "who is this?"
He rudely asked again, is this ___?
I asked who is this?
This went on a third time.
I then said "goodbye."
He replied, "your mama!" and hung up

Complaints that show up against them indicate they telemarket for high overhead "charities".

In this age, it is likely that ANY unexpected telemarketer calling you is engaged in some aspect of deception or fraud.

    TJ,

That's a bit of an overreach.  Legitamate cold calling happens all the time.  There are lots of laws to help minimize it all, but they are difficult to enforce - lots of complaints are needed.

Legal cold callers will always tell you who they are and always remove you from the lists they are using.  Charities are the same way, they are not required to comply with the Do Not Call registries, but legit ones always remove your number from their list.

You are right that charities that tend to use cold calling have a very high overhead - it's not cheap.

"There are lots of laws to help minimize it all, but they are difficult to enforce - lots of complaints are needed."

True, and that is why the illegitimate callers pretty much ignore the Do Not Call laws, since they know nothing will happen.

"Legal cold callers will always tell you who they are and always remove you from the lists they are using."

They are required to maintain internal Do Not Call lists, by both federal and state laws, even if they have exceptions to scrubbing their call lists against the national information.

"Charities are the same way, they are not required to comply with the Do Not Call registries,"

They may not have to scrub, but they would have to maintain internal Do Not Call lists.  The telemarketers may be calling on behalf of a charity, but they are for-profit businesses.

They also come under FCC prohibitions against autodialing cell phones, although non-compliant telemarketers often deliberately target cell phones.  There are also regulations regarding excessive autodialed hang-up calls.

As for this particular telemarketer, complaints indicate they appear to be systematically evading Do Not Call requests.  They also are reported to be using many caller id numbers, defeating blocking services.  By your definition, I guess that makes them "illegitimate".

"SO FAR HAVE REFUSED TO PUT ME ON THEIR 'DO NOT CALL' LIST"

"They called my cell phone  and left no message."

"I asked to Please Take me off your list.
Caller responded we can not do that this is a pooled number.
I asked What is your name? Caller then Hung Up.."

"we have requested at least several times for them to put us on the DNC list for their business and they never comply. We have been subjected to harassment, rude people, and complete ignorance from this company"

"I've even followed the prompts twice to remove my phone number from their list, but it hasn't worked. "

"As others reported, no relief after requesting our number be removed."

"I too am getting these calls at all hours and have repeatedly asked that my number be removed. It has been going on for a long time and now I am taking further action."

"I have called back at least twice and told at least 4 different employees to stop calling. I've also filed two FTC complaints."

One of their charities.  Various reports put fundraising costs at around 50%.

"Kids wish network is a real non-profit group (check bbb.org or kwn.org) and the money does go to the organizations, but a large percentage is kept to cover fundraising costs "

We have repeatedly followed their prompts and entered our number on the request to stop calls.  They just use another number to call us.  They call constantly.  We will NOT contribute to cold calls.

    Tired of rude telemarketers
Our phone rings about five times a day from the same telemarketing service -- Insight.  I have asked that my name is taken off their list and before I can complete my sentence, they've hung up.  I've also called the number on my caller ID and followed the prompts to remove my phone number from their calling pool.  So far, this hasn't worked either.  I have never experienced such rude people  before.  I know their job is tough; but part of it is to be POLITE.
I will NEVER donate to anyone that calls my home from this telemarketing firm.  Sad, isn't it. . . . they're calling for charities. . . . .

    Yeah....
I understand where a lot of peoples comments are coming from but people are [***]. I'm a telemarketer and there are nice people on the phone but 99 percent of people called automatically call me a dick or act like I don't have any emotions. "oh dont call on sunday" if you realized theres still cancer, war, and several other things still going on, the evils of the world don't stop just because its your day off or its the lords day. Stop being selfish and give a legit reason. Like someone said above "grow up" and we do have a life actually. We do get paid pretty well.

The president (Paul Marinelli) is a cocaine addict, and the vp (Ben Scott) is an alcoholic, they do not care about your complaints, you have to take action with the attorney generals office in michigan at 1-877-765-8388 and the FTC at 1-888-382-1222. Thats the only way you'll get any results

We call the rudest people who say things like, "PEOPLE SHOULD BE DONATING TO US!," and then hanging up.  (That's a direct quote by the way).  Being a telemarketer, we have people who say other things like, "if you're selling something we're not buying so [***] off," (also another quote), without even hearing what we're really trying to do.  People have denied to donate a mere $15 because THEY were busy watching Football -.-.  That's happened about 4 times to me.  Well I'm glad they can enjoy Football, because someone with cancer won't be able to much longer.  I understand that people think that our company is a fraud, but like someone above said, we say where we're from, we have a website, and a phone number, so it's not like you can't contact us.  Someone also stated above the, "it's a Sunday," complaint.  Working on Sunday is the worst, and that's ALL they say.  He's correct too, cancer doesn't say, "oh it's Sunday?  I guess I'll go away now."  People have problems everyday of the week, and these selfish [***] don't realize it.  The reason we're rude to you [***] is because every one of you [***] are rude to us.  I have had many people tell me to, "[***] off," and our manager says to, "kill them with kindness."  I'm not just gonna listen to hundreds of people to tell me to [***] off and then be kind to them.  Though the calls get annoying, realize that it's not the telemarketers fault, considering the computer makes the calls for us.  We have no control over who we call and only have 2-3 seconds to read and correctly pronounce the person's name, so excuse us for mispronouncing a name with no vowels and includes z, x, and q as primary letters.  You complainers are the inconsiderate ones.

      Telemarketing is dead.

It was killed by greed driven deception and fraud, first by the telecoms as they slammed their competiors' customers with fraudulent transfers, and then by other fraudulent telemarketers who preyed on consumers, with the result being the Do Not Call laws.  Today, more than half of all consumer phone numbers are on the Do Not Call list.

Charity telemarketing is on the way out, as well, being killed by similar fraud and deception.  Most charity telemarketing dollars go to "overhead", really management and more telemarketing.  Some send less than 20% of dollars collected, to any alleged charitable purpose, which then dissipates it further with its own overhead.

The telemarketing industry has no credibility, having lost it by violating the trust of the consumers they called.

You have a website?  That makes it a legit, good company that cares I guess.  What a joke!  Oh, and by the way, if you go to the website it will infect your PC with malware (not me saying that, Norton 360 saying that).
