They can buy it.. replies to
They can buy credit reports and skip tracing information, so even if they are guessing which "J. Smith" to try to collect John Smith's debt from, they can toss out some or all of the "debtor"s SSN as if it's "with the account".  Pretending having your SSN "proves you owe it" is deceptive.

    Always demand..
written validation of any alleged "debt", obtained by them from the original creditor and mailed to you by US Mail.  FDCPA requires debt collectors to respond to disputes and validation requests, and any debt collector attempting to evade such requests is being deceptive.

With fraudulent accounts.. replies to myisha williams
such as credit card accounts or loans, file complaints with your local police and get a copy of the police report for your records.  You can use that to dispute fraudulent accounts on your credit reports, or attempts to collect them from you, and if they don't remove them, you can sue them.

Since the law (FDCPA and FCRA)  allows courts to award damages and attorney fees, there are attorneys who take these cases on contingency.  You can find a consumer attorney in your state through www.naca.net

I have received numerous calls from this national recovery, they tell me I owe a credit card debit from 2003. They will not send me any information except for a judgment from 2003. Anyone can pull up a judgement and send me the information. They also told me they were gonna garnish my wages and my husbands. And they spoke with my husband on his phone and gave him all the information without my permission. They also got into my bank account which I closed out. This credit card was also a card that was filed on a bankruptcy account in 2005 under someone else. I told them after that I will pay once I get proper documentation and still I get nothing.
