I have a top-loader and the lid started to rust after 3 years. The problem is so bad now that my clothes are getting ruined.  Like other people, I got nowhere with customer service because the problem was beyond the 1 year warranty. They wanted me to buy a new lid and pay for the service call. It seems that the materials used on a washing machine are defective if they are prone to rust. Won't buy Whirlpool again!

I too have a HORRIBLE  Experience with my whirlpool washing machine ... Platinum Cabrio that started deteriorating within 2 years of purchase. The area bleach is poured into has COMPLETELY RUSTED. Secondly, the machine erratically decides not to start. We hold button in for several minutes. We have followed reboot instructions: unplug/replugged and its just a piece of *hit. Don't buy this machine or anything  from Whirpool. You would think a company as big as whirlpool would stand behind their product, but they don't.

Same here. Rust around and under the rim. Rust falling down on our clothes. I thought Whirlpool was good. No longer!!!

Rusted lid also after 2 years. Now the hinge is separated and makes the lid unstable. Washer works when the lid is held down for locking. Bad quality materials.

My Whirlpool washer is rusting too! Completely rusted all around the bleach dispenser. Lid hinge is broken, so everytime I load or unload clothes, I have to hold the lid open and it is very heavy! I’m so disappointed with my purchase. Washer started rusting within two years of purchasing and it was an expensive washer! It is now 5 years old. Last year it started making a really loud noise when in the spin cycle. Just a matter of time before it stops working! Will never purchase another Whirlpool product!

For anyone reading this, these machines were prone to leak at the bearing seal which results in noise during spin cycle. Look under the machine and you will likely find a rusty drip from the retaining screw in the center. The fix is a new bearing, seal, and bearing installation tool. The bleach reservoir is not well designed and liquid bleach overflows/splashes onto the deck causing rust (bubbling paint) and destroying the spring hinge on that side of the machine directly below it. The fix is to replace the spring hinge (paint and coat the new part with marine grease to prevent future corrosion). Scrape rust off of deck then touch up with rustoleum. PITA, but that's life with lack of quality control. Everything outsourced to China. No regulations on right to repair or minimum warranties. You will find proprietary parts such as the spring hinge ridiculously expensive.

I just moved into a home with this garbage wash machine. It ruined my lab coat. I’m pissed. I tried vinegar and rustoleum, but it’s still chipping away.

Ours chipped within first year and now the paint is bubbling further down into the drum.  Worst purchase.

Our washing machine is having the same rust problem just below the bleach dispenser & also at the bottom of the washer.  Terrible to read the dryer may rust too.  More research & reading forums before we have to replace units.  We're in if a class action gets started.  Document every detail.
