My wife and I recently purchased a Felicity Sunlit Cherry Bedroom Suite from Thomasville Furniture.  Our Thomasville saleswoman had led us to believe that our Thomasville furniture would be made in North Carolina, but when it was delivered we discovered that it was all made in China.  Thomasville had built its reputation on delivering high quality American-made furniture from North Carolina -- but it appears that those days are now long gone.

The fit & finish of our Thomasville made-in-China furniture was poor.  There's really no other way to describe it.  Our bedroom suite has a total of 28 drawers. Many drawers weren't centered in their openings; some drawers were recessed in too far, and other drawers extended out too far.  After 2 visits from Thomasville's repair people, we still have: 8 drawers not centered in their openings; 13 that extend out too far; and 7 that are recessed in too far.  Thomasville's repair people told us that our remaining problems were non-repairable.  So I guess we'll just have to learn to live with this poor quality.

When we purchased our furniture, we specifically asked our Thomasville saleswoman what kind of wood was used in its construction.  She told us it was "entirely cherry".  When we later asked Thomasville's repair people that same question, they looked at our furniture and readily identified over 5 different species of wood -- just one was cherry, and at least 2 were obscure, unidentifiable Chinese hardwoods.  What we actually received was quite different from what we paid for.  When we brought this to the attention of the management of our Thomasville dealer, they completely ignored our complaint.

At first glance, Thomasville's construction quality appeared to us to be quite good (i.e., dovetail drawers, etc.).  But in  places where it wouldn't be quite as obvious to a customer, some of the furniture's joints are held together with staples.  That doesn't instill much confidence that the furniture will last for more than a few years.  We would have expected to find that kind of cheap construction in bedroom suites that cost under $1,500 -- but not in a Thomasville bedroom suite that cost us over $5,000!

My wife's dresser arrived with a large 10" circular hole in the back of the cabinet.  Rather than repairing this damage "before" the furniture was shipped, Thomasville's factory instead tried to conceal the damage by screwing a large Masonite panel over the hole.  While Thomasville repaired the damaged back panel "after" we discovered it, the point is that Thomasville deliberately shipped severely damaged furniture to a customer with the hope that the damage would never be discovered.  That's not what one would expect from a quality "world class" furniture brand.

Thomasville's furniture is shipped with a Chinese "plasticized" finish.  In our experience, it attracts dust like a magnet and unlike a quality lacquered or varnished finish it's relatively soft and easily damaged.  According to Thomasville's "printed furniture care instructions" my wife and I are not suppose to allow synthetics, rubber, or plastics to rest on the wood finish as they may damage the finish.  That, of course, prohibits placing most lamps, clocks, radios, TVs, pens, etc. on top of your Thomasville furniture unless you first modify the bottoms of those products.

Everything at Thomasville seems to now be focused on charging its customers as much as possible, while at the same time cutting its costs as much possible.  Even the screws that hold the knobs to the drawers have been cost-cut.  Rather than extending the screws into the knobs by at least 3/8", they just barely touch the knob. The cost savings across an entire bedroom set has to be less than a dollar -- and yet amazingly Thomasville still went for it.

After contacting our local Thomasville dealer several times about many of these problems and receiving no satisfaction, my wife and I wrote to Ed Teplitz, president of Thomasville Furniture Industries -- and also to Ralph Scozzafava, CEO of  Furniture Brands International.  Furniture Brands International owns Thomasville, along with Broyhill, Lane, Drexel Heritage, Henredon, and Maitland-Smith.  Neither of them ever responded to us.  That pretty much sums-up our Thomasville customer satisfaction experience.

Why live with it? Return it and get your money back. Did you use a credit card to pay for it? If so dispute the charge. I'd also report Thomasville to the Better Business Bureau. Good luck.

They don't except returns; not even on stock pieces. With or without you realizing it they have you sign a purchase agreement when you first place the order that includes a statement that the furniture can't be returned.

Wow.  I had similar experience.  I just purchased a Thomasville Cinnamon Hill bachelor's chest and night table for a total of $1600 after delivery and taxes.  On the showroom floor and online it looks beautiful.  The salesman told me it was burly maple and cherry.  The color had a lot of light and darks with beautiful grain.  To be sure it matched my antique oak pieces I brought a piece of wood into the store.  Then the furniture arrived.  It was stained a reddish cherry with no grain.  It was all dark with no highlights.  And it had that weird dust collecting finish on it.  I am betting there is no cherry or burly maple in the piece.  Since there were only two colors, ginger or black, I thought maybe I had been mistaken about the true color of the ginger.

I brought a drawer back into the store and could see that there was no grain.  The salesman said all pieces of wood are different.  I asked why all the wood on their floor was burly with lights and darks and why all the picture on the Internet looked like that.  He said I would need to talk to the manager.

In the meantime, I asked my friend who helped me pick out the piece, to come check it out.  He couldn't believe the difference.  I took him back to the store where he said there was no comparison.  The salesman again said grains are different, etc.

So, today I went in to see the salesman.  He started talking company policy and then said that all sales are final and that it says that right on the receipt.  Well, I never noticed that and I thought Thomasville was a reputable company with high quality furniture.  The manager said he would have to send an inspector out, there would be a restocking fee, I assume a re-delivery fee too and they would send me another piece of the same wood.  I said that I didn't trust their ability to send me a piece that would look like the one in the store.  I asked them to just switch it for the black finish.  Apparently that's not possible.  I could have the one on the store (with a nick in it) and a black side table also off the floor.  I said I didn't want black and ginger.

So I came home to put a dispute on the credit card to hold the payment.  VISA says that if the company's policy is all sales are final, they cannot make them change that.

The manager said he will not make a snap decision and he will call me on Monday.

I too have had a bad experience with Thomasville Leather chairs that are made in China and stink up my entire house.  They look and are brand new and they refused to take them back and then later offered me a 2,200.00 store credit only which I refused.  GE Money was the deferred billing option which is how I purchased the chairs.  GE Money is on the side of Thomasville because they feed GE Money business.  I learned that the hard way when I disputed the bill, which I still have not paid as I fight with Thomasville.  I hired an independent Laborortory to evaluate the chairs and the report showed they were unacceptable in the odor they produce.  Thomasville read the report and only will offer a store credit.  Forget that, I want a full refund back to GE Money as I don't ever want to business with Thomasville again.  Buy from Crate and Barrel, they have fabulous furniture and it IS made in the USA.

I also purchased Thomasville furniture, believing that the quality of the merchandise was second to none and that all the pieces were made in the United States.  Much to my chagrin, this furniture is not made here and the quality is extremely poor.  My dining room table, chairs (which were about $300 a piece) and hutch were all damaged when delivered.  Of course, I was livid and refused to accept the shipment.  I called customer service and explained that I bought NEW furniture, not damaged and I wanted what I saw in their showroom.  The showroom furniture had no damage and was in perfect condition.  I asked her why they would send me damaged furniture when I bought new furniture.  She tried to explain that the delivery men had damaged it and it was not shipped that way.  I told her that there was NO WAY that the furniture could have been damaged because the finish was "chipped" and then stained over the chip.  She said that I could return it for a repair and they would ship the same back to me.  I said NO, you will deliver me new furniture, the furniture I ordered.  Even the hutch mirror was broken.  I was so disappointed.  I was so sure I did my homework and chose a reputable company, but I do not believe there are any left.  They are all out for a quick dollar (and a lot of dollars at that).  Substandard furniture for a high price.  Is nothing sacred anymore???  I will never purchase from them again and I will never recommend their company to anyone.  Well they did send out new furniture and it's just OK.  No chips or anything, but some of the stains are off and like the post before, I don't believe all of the wood is of the same kind.  Another company that doesn't stand by its product.  I'm sorry I didn't find these posts before I bought my furniture but I bought it in early 2007 so this site may have not been up yet.  Can you say class action???

I have a friend that works in sales for a privatly owned Thomasville store.  She was told pay plus commission and bonus.  She was told to sell a minim of $30,000 a month. In this encomy its hard to make  sales and now she is so far behind that it will take her several months to make up her short fall. Since she has a short fall carried over month to month there really is no base pay and the bonus is cheap items they get for free from one of the local office stores. Somtimes they give out cash for the most in-home appointments and or highest weekly sales. So far she has earned about $60.00 in cash and a cheap thermas wich I think is still in her car. They do not allow sick time or furnal time. If you miss  any time at all they are quick to reduce your pay / draw.  If you work over time or extra days there is no pay for that and they deduct for lunch breaks even if you work through your lunch break. Milage is paid for in home appointments when they get around to it after about 3 months. She has been with this company for about a year and yes she is looking for another job but she needs to stay with this company untill she finds another one. She showed up for work for a week while she was sick with a tempture of 100 plus because she needed the money even though it was a draw / pay. The manager could careless and just wanted her to make sales.

We purchased a Cinnamon Hill bedroom set from Thomasville in April of 2008. The furniture was delivered in May of 2008. I was appalled to see the "Made in China" stickers attached to the furniture as it was being brought into our home. I was under the impression that the furniture was made in the United States.

Already, a drawer track has broken on our Drawer-Chest (model 42711-311). This drawer was only opened a few times (used to store winter sweaters)before the track broke.

The furniture is also an unbelievable dust magnet as others have noted. The dust clings to the surface of the furniture instead of to the dampened dust cloth.

Alas, I never saw any negative posts before buying our furniture. I hope this website will help others be alert to the situation.

You should try going to www.kingsacres.com.  It is Amish made furniture and it is solid oak.  They don't have prices online, but I know they deliver to New York, New Jersey, PA, Maryland, and Delaware.  I have a bed, pantry, dry wash sink, table, chairs, armoire, hutch and corner shelf from them.  they have never let me down.  It is solid oak through and through.

return it, it is garbage!!! We have a entire bedroom set fiasco with them also.  They do not care and have horrible customer service.  We are disputing the bill with GE credit card.  They told us it was made in NC, it was made in China and that's why it smells!  It is such poor quality and they will not take back anything!!!!!!good luck.

I was about to plunk down a couple grand for Thomasville Cinnamon Hill, guess I won't.  Sorry you all had bad results and hope you will be compensated.  Thanks you all for your posts, it's time for the "little guy" to fight back.  Hope Thomasville is seeing these posts because they just lost a huge sale.  Really, thank you for the good people who took the time to post their complaints.

You were smart. Thomasville Furniture does not take furniture back and is unwilling to repair damaged furniture. They will tell you it meets their standards; unfortunately their standards are very low. They will sell you chairs that you can't sit on without it showing immediate signs of wear.Chairs costing way over a thousand dollars a piece that you can't use. They have high prices and poorly made furniture. They did not even bother to screw the legs on my couch before delivering it. The sales woman was rude and nasty once she made her commission. Contacting the store is a nightmare and you can't call their corporate office. You can only contact them by email. When you finally hear from the main office they may apologize for your bad experience with your furniture purchase, but they will let you know they you signed
a purchase agreement when you first placed the order and the furniture can't be returned. They tell you that they make repairs or give exchanges. Mind you they are the ones that determine if it is warranted.

I was looking for furniture made in the United State too.    I thought the two B Furniture companies and the Thomaville Furniture were the best furniture companies in the states. After looking and reading complaints about these three companies It appears that the Armish will have another new customer seeing as they stand behind their work.

Thanks for all your posts.  I was about to buy the Wanderlust bedroom collection because it does look fabulous on the show floor.  After reading these posts, I will not buy the furniture. I am sick of companies claiming quality when it is not.  I am very disappointed in Thomasville.  They used to make such great furniture.  I know my post doesn't help get your money back but it did prevent Thomasville from getting an additional $4600.

I'm also relieved to have stumbled onto this message board.  My younger brother just purchased a jewel of an arts and crafts home and I had offered to furnish one of the bedrooms for him as a gift (as well as a place for me to sleep when I visit).  I had really connected to the Cinnamon Hill bedroom collection on the Thomasville website, but had never seen the collection personally, so decided to try to surf for objective perspectives on it.  Wow!  I was preparing to call a furniture store located nearby to my brother and order a bed, dresser, and nightstand but will pass up on this line.  This is so discouraging.  I hate it that, unless we practically get something custom-made in this country, it will invariably end up being garbage!

I also would like to thank everyone for their posts. My husband and I just bought our first home and I too liked the look of the Thomsville Cinnamon Hill bedroom furniture. We don't have a ton of money, but I was willing to spend more on something that would be quality and last for a long time. I am so glad that I came across this site before I spent anything. Thank you so much. I am disgusted with constantly being lied to. Sorry for your hardships.

I wish I would have found this site before I purchased my Thomasville Cinnamon Hill furniture.  I also was surprised to see the 'made in China' stickers on the furniture.  Showroom sales lady stated the furniture is made in the USA -- obviously not true.   Also, this furniture has a strange finish that is impossible to keep clean.  Buyer Beware!
